Zak Brown believes that the Mercedes power unit is well-positioned to dominate the 2026 engine regulations, noting that he is 'extremely happy' that McLaren will be a customer team until 2030 at least.

Mercedes are currently the engine supplier for McLaren, Williams and Aston Martin, and while the latter are moving to Honda power units in 2026, they are well-backed to repeat their success from the start of the hybrid era when the new regulations come into effect.

When asked about his faith in Mercedes' 2026 offering, Brown was glowing in his praise, which will come as a relief to Toto Wolff and George Russell, both of whom will be hoping that their team can hit the ground running for the new regulations in a similar manner to Red Bull in 2022.

“I think if you look at HPP’s track record, how long they’ve been in the business, the people they have, the level of commitment from Ola Kallenius on down, I think it’s hard to bet against them," he said at Silverstone.

"But Ferrari’s awesome, Honda has done a great job… obviously Renault’s had its challenges. I think Audi could be tough as a new entry, as all new entries are.”

He continued: “So when you look at that mapping of who has experience, kind of… it’s hard not to tick the box at Mercedes. [They’ve] been doing it forever, fully committed, got the hybrid right the first time around. Where you’ve got someone like Audi who is new… they’ve also got an integrated team.

Red Bull has never done an engine before… that’s the one I left out… and you learn, and there’s an element of you learn on the job no matter how well you try and prepare, but we’re not to write anyone off.”

The McLaren Racing CEO later added: “We’re extremely happy with Mercedes and aren’t giving any thought to anything beyond our next contract with Mercedes which takes us through 2030.”

Until 2026 arrives, fans can look forward to a tense battle at the front end of the field. With the teams converging, Red Bull, McLaren, Mercedes and Ferrari are all in strong positions to challenge for the 2025 World Championships.
