Off-Leash Dog Parks

Aster the Dog at Rec Grounds

Rec Grounds Dog Park Open

The Recreation Grounds Dog Park is located near the baseball diamonds.

Each spring it must be closed for an annual spring dry-out period. This allows the snowmelt to drain and the turf to dry so normal spring maintenance can be conducted. This requires dry and unfrozen ground to help with ground compaction from high traffic and drainage. Reopening will be dependent on ground and weather conditions to be able to perform needed maintenance. A notice will be posted when it is closed.

Hawk Ave Dog Park Closed

The Hawk Ave dog park is closed for the season.  The ground is showing significant thaw increasing the chanced of hazards resurfacing.

  • The off-leash park in the Industrial District is accessible at the entrance of town from Banff Avenue and Compound Road
  • The closure or park relocation will be required in the warmer months of 2024
  • There may be times during the winter (i.e. warming) that the dog park will be closed until the ground refreezes
  • There is still a potential risk of injury to dogs and humans from the existing debris through digging, thaw, etc. The municipal parks team will continue with routine site inspections to reduce risk
  • Long-term options presented to council include a potential relocation of the dog park due to the ongoing risk. The Town is assessing with Parks Canada a dog park located on Marmot Crescent. The Town will seek public feedback in summer 2024.

Dog Park Etiquette

To help everyone have an enjoyable time in the dog park please ensure that you and your pet adhere to the dog park rules and regulations:

  • Carry a leash at all times
  • Keep your dog under voice and sight control at all times

Resources

Not sure if your dog is ready for the park? Or are you a new pet owner and want to make sure you can identify nervous and stressful behaviours? Here are a few resources to help ensure you and your dog are off-leash park ready:

Licensing

Annual pet licenses are required for dogs and cats in Banff. Licenses help us return lost pets to their owners. License fees are used to provide amenities like bag dispensers along trails, the off-leash dog park and the Banff animal shelter.
