Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is a new strain of Coronavirus (CoV) that was discovered in 2019. On 11 March 2020, COVID-19 was characterized by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a pandemic.

Common signs of infection include respiratory symptoms, fever, cough, shortness of breath and breathing difficulties. In more severe cases, infection can cause pneumonia, severe acute respiratory syndrome, kidney failure and even death.

Mongolia has remained on high alert since 13 February 2020 and is taking preparedness and response measures based on the country’s national preparedness and response plan.

The WHO Country Office in Mongolia has been working closely with the Government of Mongolia, the Ministry of Health and multi-sectoral organizations in COVID-19 response measures.

Collaboration includes:
• Sharing technical guidance;
• Strengthening infection prevention and control;
• Procuring critical laboratory and medical supplies;
• Surveillance, risk assessment, modelling and projections;
• Risk communication and community engagement.
