News release

Europe Day is organized by the EU Delegation to Mongolia every year celebrating the richness and diversity of European culture along with its member states, cultural educational institutes, companies and the projects implemented in Mongolia.

The National Center for Mental Health under the Ministry of Health and WHO Representative Office in Mongolia jointly participated in Europe Day 2023 event representing “Mongolia COVID-19 Crisis Response” project on 14 May 2023 at Sukhbaatar square, Ulaanbaatar city. The project team provided mental health counselling to individuals and families on post-pandemic mental health issues after mental health diagnosis with short survey.

In the first year of the COVID-19, global prevalence of anxiety and depression increased by massive 25%, especially affecting the mental health of young people, women and people with pre-existing physical health conditions. Major explanation for the increase is the unprecedented stress caused by the social isolation resulting from the pandemic including constraints on people’s ability to work, seek support from loved ones, loneliness, fear of infection, grief after bereavement and financial worries.

WHO and partners have worked to help different groups cope with and respond to the mental health impacts of COVID-19. As part of this effort, WHO is collaborating with the National Center for Mental Health under the Ministry of Health to provide technical and financial support in implementing mental health activities within the framework of the “Mongolia COVID-19 Crisis Response” project funded by the European Union.

About the “Mongolia COVID-19 Crisis Response” project

The project is implemented by WHO Mongolia in collaboration with the Ministry of Health with focus on three specific areas: strengthening the capacity of the national health system to monitor, prevent, and control the spread and effects of COVID-19; strengthening laboratory capacity at national and sub-national levels; and ensuring continuity and quality of essential health care services during wide-spread community transmission and lockdown.
