Incredibly special experience

Review of Angama Mara
Reviewed 3 weeks ago
It's almost hard to put into words how much I loved my time at Angama Mara. From the moment of arrival, we felt welcomed and taken care of. The staff and guides are phenomenal and such warm, fun people. For context, this was my first visit to Africa and my spouse and I spent 5 nights there (only stop). I've been to my fair share of 5 star hotels, chain and boutique. This experience is one I will always remember.

I loved every minute in the bush and at the hotel. The hotel itself is spectacular. We especially enjoyed taking in the views at the lodge and from our private deck. The food is healthy, fresh, and plentiful. The "tents" were cozy and quite luxurious. The environment is low key, laid back. Staff are always available to check in and assist, but they also give you space to hang out and explore.

We were paired with Ekidor as our guide in a private Land Cruiser. I couldn't get enough drives or time in the Mara. Ekidor was fantastic -- at helping us plan our days, spotting animals, and teaching us so much about the Mara. He's also a magician... somehow finding a leopard AND Black Rhinos (2! A BABY!) for us to see during our short visit.

I cannot wait to return. In the meantime, I have a million pictures to re-visit and think about this trip often.

Thank you, @NatalieR1871, for this wonderful review. More than that, thank you for choosing Angama Mara as your first and only safari stop on your trip to Africa; that is a special privilege indeed. You have captured your time at Angama Mara so perfectly: the views, the animals (leopard and rhino!!, the lodge... but most, the people. The team is what makes our guests fall in love with Africa. Please come back one day, there is much more to discover.

Of all the places I've visited, this was the most amazing!!! I can't wait to go back. It began with the friendly welcome home greeting, and I did feel like it could be home. Moses was so knowledgable on the game drive, and we saw every animal - even the rhino. Wiki was so attentive and always worried that I wasn't eating enough. The "tents" if you could really call them that were a class above any hotel room I ever stayed in. Food was delicious and all the staff attentive and wonderful. Last minute, my husband's doctor said he couldn't travel; however, I was completely at ease traveling alone there. It was the experience of a lifetime.....looking to bring my two grandsons on an adventure they will remember forever.

Thank you @english226 for this lovely review, capturing all that makes Angama Mara special - mostly the team! Followed by wonderful animal sightings. We are so sorry that your husband couldn't join you, but hopefully you will return together one day - Wiki and Moses will be waiting to welcome you BACK home.

Adventure of a lifetime!
My 12-year-old daughter and I just returned from 5 nights at the Angama Mara and then 3 at Amgama Amboseli. This was without a doubt the trip of a lifetime! The camp is absolutely stunning and the team at Angama is amazing.

Tash managed our booking and was insanely helpful! She is the one who made this trip happen. She is wonderful and put together a perfect itinerary.

Elly was our guide and could spot a mouse from a mile away. He made our game drives informative and fun.

Wiki is the absolute best! He was our butler for the stay and one of the kindest people I have ever met. He was up early with coffee for me and tea for my daughter and took amazing care of us.

Diana, Bonaface, and the rest of the team were all outstanding.

The meals are delicious. Plan on bringing clothes a size bigger as you are beyond well-fed. We were lucky enough to do the Out of Africa lunch and I highly recommend it as the spot is stunning.

We saw all of the Big 5, enjoyed stunning views from the escarpment, and hope that we will be lucky enough to return one day. We had high expectations for the trip and they were exceeded in every way.

Thank you again @aaronwargo for another wonderful review on your stay with Angama - this time in the Mara. It is always so wonderful reading team members being mentioned by name - always recognised and celebrated.

It was also wonderful to read that you saw phenomenal game with Elly.

Note for us: add one clothes size to our recommended packing list :) - we loved that!

Thank you again

This review is long overdue, but I couldn't not write about my family's incredible visit to Angama Mara! I chose this lodge because a Youtube family I follow visited and it looked amazing, so I had VERY high expectations. They surpassed them all. From the time we landed in Nairobi (where we were greeted right off the plane and escorted through the diplomats line at immigration) to the time we left (when John picked us up ten feet from the bush plane terminal), we were treated like royalty. The lodge is absolutely beautiful, both incredibly luxurious and perfectly blended with the surroundings. The staff was overwhelmingly kind and attentive, the food delicious. Many special thanks to Doris and Sadeera, who treated our children like they were their own and took such wonderful care of us.

I was worried that our daughters would get bored on long drives, but we stayed out for up to eight hours each day and they loved it! We saw all of the Big 5, even a leopard! The vehicles were extremely comfortable--my husband and I both commented that we never felt stiff or sore, even after riding so long each day. Fred, our guide, was phenomenal!!! We never came across a creature he didn't know, and he was so patient with our girls. I loved hearing his stories about the individual animals in the Mara; it is clear the guides have great respect for them and care about their well-being. We always felt safe, even when four lions were walking right towards us!

The "tents" were the most amazing rooms we've ever had--heated pads under the sheets, incredible water pressure in the showers, included snacks in the room, I could go on and on. The camp is split into two identical parts, and we were told our part was over 2/3 full, but there were times it felt we had the entire place to ourselves. As a family of four, we had two connecting tents which was waaayyyyy more space than we've ever had. When we arrived, a group of baboons was hanging out right off our balcony :)

Definitely do the balloon ride, and a safari photo shoot with Joseph! His pictures are something I will cherish forever, and he--like all the staff--was wonderful with the children at the lodge.

Bottom line, after visiting 31 countries, Angama Mara is top of our location list, and you shouldn't look any further for a dream safari spot. The weather was perfect--even watching from the top of the ridge as a storm rolled in was something I'll never forget. I'm actually glad we weren't there during the Great Migration, as there were times we'd go hours without seeing another vehicle, and we always had prime viewing spots.

Thank you, Angama Mara, for giving us the trip of our lives!!!

Room tip: Even when full, I don't think this lodge would feel crowded, and you would still receive personalized attention.

Thank you Angama for creating a truly fulfilling experience of Kenya - I stayed at both of Angama's fabulous top 5 star properties. The stark contrast in landscape and diversity of wildlife blew me away ! My convenience was top priority for Johnny, and Rita of Angama booking a direct flight to the Mara for the 4 spectacular nights after experiencing Angama's newest property at Amboseli! I was astounded everyday by the views and the animals and the kindness and care of all the people there working as a team to manifest lifetime moments!
My guide came to meet me at the airstrip - Ekidorn and he was all about being a top notch guide giving me a chance to tailor my experiences everyday to which animals I wanted to see most. Also the professional photographer Robert joined me again for amazing photos of the Jaguars, Chita, and Lions that make the Mara Triangle so amazing! I'm not a photographer but Robert managed to solve that for me with the most awesome journal in pictures of everything we saw! Not worrying about the photos also gave me the freedom to experience the sightings fully!
I did not visit during the Migration because there are plenty of animals in March especially lots of newborns - and I wanted to be there without the crowds and the heat! It was exactly as I wanted even more perfect for me than I could have imagined. I was able to witness the full cycle of life in the food chain, it was emotional and shocking - 3 Chita brothers in a coalition took about 3 hours to decide on a target, stalk and strategically bring down an impala, after they ate the best parts, the vultures, hyenas, and jackals took over - one hyena took off with the prized impala horns - like a trophy! Sights like this you never forget, and thanks to Ekidorn's patience and skills in spotting everything and my prized possession my Nikon binoculars it was clear as in a widescreen movie!
The tent-rooms are top of the sky high glamping, and staying there was like in a dream with the proverbial Out of Africa bathtub over looking the escarpment from the all glass windows that open to a lovely veranda to sit outside - after your bath sitting there donning the luxury cotton Masai cloth sarong or bath robes provided is epic! Of course with a Masala tea - for me with almond milk and Masai honey!
As a vegan I was treated with respect and care and the on site organic gardens provided me with a cornucopia of fresh greens and veggies to my delight! The chef whipped up magic for me even for my game breakfasts and picnics - as I'm mostly in the bush with Ekidorn from the crack of dawn - as he's as much an animal fanatic as I am!
I rediscovered the joy I had as a child here in Africa, and I came back to being me again! Thank you Angama ! I will be back!

Room tip: Start early to see some rare sights without crowds - you can sleep at home! Buy the best binoculars !!! Stay 5-6 days ... its never enough!
