This review is long overdue, but I couldn't not write about my family's incredible visit to Angama Mara! I chose this lodge because a Youtube family I follow visited and it looked amazing, so I had VERY high expectations. They surpassed them all. From the time we landed in Nairobi (where we were greeted right off the plane and escorted through the diplomats line at immigration) to the time we left (when John picked us up ten feet from the bush plane terminal), we were treated like royalty. The lodge is absolutely beautiful, both incredibly luxurious and perfectly blended with the surroundings. The staff was overwhelmingly kind and attentive, the food delicious. Many special thanks to Doris and Sadeera, who treated our children like they were their own and took such wonderful care of us.
I was worried that our daughters would get bored on long drives, but we stayed out for up to eight hours each day and they loved it! We saw all of the Big 5, even a leopard! The vehicles were extremely comfortable--my husband and I both commented that we never felt stiff or sore, even after riding so long each day. Fred, our guide, was phenomenal!!! We never came across a creature he didn't know, and he was so patient with our girls. I loved hearing his stories about the individual animals in the Mara; it is clear the guides have great respect for them and care about their well-being. We always felt safe, even when four lions were walking right towards us!
The "tents" were the most amazing rooms we've ever had--heated pads under the sheets, incredible water pressure in the showers, included snacks in the room, I could go on and on. The camp is split into two identical parts, and we were told our part was over 2/3 full, but there were times it felt we had the entire place to ourselves. As a family of four, we had two connecting tents which was waaayyyyy more space than we've ever had. When we arrived, a group of baboons was hanging out right off our balcony :)
Definitely do the balloon ride, and a safari photo shoot with Joseph! His pictures are something I will cherish forever, and he--like all the staff--was wonderful with the children at the lodge.
Bottom line, after visiting 31 countries, Angama Mara is top of our location list, and you shouldn't look any further for a dream safari spot. The weather was perfect--even watching from the top of the ridge as a storm rolled in was something I'll never forget. I'm actually glad we weren't there during the Great Migration, as there were times we'd go hours without seeing another vehicle, and we always had prime viewing spots.
Thank you, Angama Mara, for giving us the trip of our lives!!!
