Review of Angama Mara
Reviewed 13 Apr 2024
Thank you Angama for creating a truly fulfilling experience of Kenya - I stayed at both of Angama's fabulous top 5 star properties. The stark contrast in landscape and diversity of wildlife blew me away ! My convenience was top priority for Johnny, and Rita of Angama booking a direct flight to the Mara for the 4 spectacular nights after experiencing Angama's newest property at Amboseli! I was astounded everyday by the views and the animals and the kindness and care of all the people there working as a team to manifest lifetime moments!
My guide came to meet me at the airstrip - Ekidorn and he was all about being a top notch guide giving me a chance to tailor my experiences everyday to which animals I wanted to see most. Also the professional photographer Robert joined me again for amazing photos of the Jaguars, Chita, and Lions that make the Mara Triangle so amazing! I'm not a photographer but Robert managed to solve that for me with the most awesome journal in pictures of everything we saw! Not worrying about the photos also gave me the freedom to experience the sightings fully!
I did not visit during the Migration because there are plenty of animals in March especially lots of newborns - and I wanted to be there without the crowds and the heat! It was exactly as I wanted even more perfect for me than I could have imagined. I was able to witness the full cycle of life in the food chain, it was emotional and shocking - 3 Chita brothers in a coalition took about 3 hours to decide on a target, stalk and strategically bring down an impala, after they ate the best parts, the vultures, hyenas, and jackals took over - one hyena took off with the prized impala horns - like a trophy! Sights like this you never forget, and thanks to Ekidorn's patience and skills in spotting everything and my prized possession my Nikon binoculars it was clear as in a widescreen movie!
The tent-rooms are top of the sky high glamping, and staying there was like in a dream with the proverbial Out of Africa bathtub over looking the escarpment from the all glass windows that open to a lovely veranda to sit outside - after your bath sitting there donning the luxury cotton Masai cloth sarong or bath robes provided is epic! Of course with a Masala tea - for me with almond milk and Masai honey!
As a vegan I was treated with respect and care and the on site organic gardens provided me with a cornucopia of fresh greens and veggies to my delight! The chef whipped up magic for me even for my game breakfasts and picnics - as I'm mostly in the bush with Ekidorn from the crack of dawn - as he's as much an animal fanatic as I am!
I rediscovered the joy I had as a child here in Africa, and I came back to being me again! Thank you Angama ! I will be back!

From the moment you get picked up from the airstrip the hospitality is out of this world.
The Angama team make you feel special and at home.
The view from the escarpment and your room is breathtaking!
The service is second to none, you are served by a dedicated staff member throughout your trip, the team ensure you have a diverse experience over your stay eg bush barbecue one night, a cocktail sundowner the next night etc.
The food is amazing and catered for your needs, amazing portions, fresh and beautifully balanced flavours.

I have stayed at resorts all over the world, and Angama Mara tops the list. My family stayed for 4 nights, and that was the ideal length of time to experience all that Angama Mara had to offer. Adlight took care of every detail, ensuring our family had special experiences each day. Joseph, our safari guide, helped us see the Big 5 and incredible wildlife. Lodging comfortable, meals exquisite, and the setting serene. We can't wait to return.

Showstopping views. Gorgeous interior design and architecture. Huge rooms with claw foot tubs. Lots of personal attention from Jonny (angama agent) Francis (dining butler) and Roy (room butler). Ekai and Jakob our guides were very determined to get us our wish list of animal experiences. Great companions. Lots of laughs. Super memorable drives. We loved to Maasai evening at the Boma where they recognized our birthdays and 20th. The shamba lunch in the garden. Cool boutique where we did custom beading. Loved it all.

We stayed for 5 nights at Angama Mara and we were so sad to leave.
Apart from the wonderful wildlife including predators , the ambience of the camp was remarkable .
Most important the staff here couldn’t have been more attentive .
Our butler Caroline was a real sweetheart and couldn’t do enough for us .
Our guide Jackson showed great skill in discovering elusive predators .
I am writing this sitting on our elevated balcony looking out across the Massai Mara as a sun sets on our final evening in Kenya .

Thank you too for mentioning the team who looked after you by name (many of our TA reviews do) - as they are the magic ingredient of Angama Mara... and you absolutely saw this.
We hope to welcome you back to Magical Kenya one day in the not too distant future

The grounds spectacular, the views marvelous, the animal viewing top notch, the staff friendly as can be, the location good, our safari guide was awesome and caring. The main lodge was very nice. The pool was ok. Now they not so good. The food, while plentiful was not to our liking. The housekeeping was fair. The toilet room had a floor to ceiling window, but I could clearly see the deck next door. So with no window blinds, when the light in the toilet room was on at night, that means the neighbors, when on their deck could clearly see me. Not comforting. How about putting up a window blind or extending the privacy wall? No lounge chairs on the room deck You had uncomfortable metal chairs that would burn you mid day if you sat down. The room was cold at night. This is a bucket list expensive place. How about no kids or a policy of no kids under 18 or 14? We had an obnoxious family next door. The kids were unruly and loud. You could hear them late at night, you could hear the dad yelling at them. You could hear them on the pathway to from the main lodge early and late in the day, and during the afternoon quiet time. Loud games, music, fighting, talking. It really ruined the experience. Their staff and niteguards had to hear them and chose to do nothing. I said something, and nothing changed. Lastly they have these oversize rodents that run on the roof of your tent. All night long. You hear the scurrying and noise. It woke us up, it kept us up. I mentioned it to the staff and they know about it! Well put up some chicken wire to block them I got was these rodents have kind of taken over and live there now. Spoke to other guests who had some problem. Well at $2000+ a nite you all need to fix this. Would not recommend this place nor go back. That said, heard they may be closing in 2024 for 2 months to do some renovations, hopefully they address these concerns.

Dear @abmilw
Thank you so much for the time you have taken to share this feedback - both here and through your travel advisor, please rest assured it has been taken with the utmost gravity, as we hate to hear when our guests have left Angama Mara less than in love with their experience at the lodge, especially when it is delivered by a team of people who want nothing more than to delight their guests while they are on holiday.
We have looked at the tented suite you were in to understand the privacy issue, and will be making a plan there (this is the first we have had this feedback in 9 years, as it has never been brought to our attention before). You will also be pleased to hear that we had a team of experts on site earlier this year addressing the love that the Rock Hyraxes (the rodent-like animal you refer to) have for the roofs of our tented suites. These will all be secured by the end of May.
With regards to the family staying next door to you, your camp Manager Josephat did ask the family to respect that they are in a tented camp and that with only canvas between the tent walls sound carries much further on the Rift Valley, and for them to please be more understanding. Sadly, this plea went unheard or ignored. Josephat did do his very best to speak to the other guests.
We are so sorry to read that you would not consider coming back to Angama Mara - especially as we so value constructive feedback where we are shown very clearly where there is room for improvement - this is one of the many ways we can only get better.
Thank you again for the feedback - we are so appreciative of the candour.
