Review of Angama Mara
Reviewed 08 Feb 2024
Hotel's Favourite
We stayed for 5 nights at Angama Mara and we were so sad to leave.
Apart from the wonderful wildlife including predators , the ambience of the camp was remarkable .
Most important the staff here couldn’t have been more attentive .
Our butler Caroline was a real sweetheart and couldn’t do enough for us .
Our guide Jackson showed great skill in discovering elusive predators .
I am writing this sitting on our elevated balcony looking out across the Massai Mara as a sun sets on our final evening in Kenya .

Thank you @313lanal for this wonderful review, written from the Edge of the Great Rift Valley - we so appreciate this glowing report!
Thank you too for mentioning the team who looked after you by name (many of our TA reviews do) - as they are the magic ingredient of Angama Mara... and you absolutely saw this.
We hope to welcome you back to Magical Kenya one day in the not too distant future

The grounds spectacular, the views marvelous, the animal viewing top notch, the staff friendly as can be, the location good, our safari guide was awesome and caring. The main lodge was very nice. The pool was ok. Now they not so good. The food, while plentiful was not to our liking. The housekeeping was fair. The toilet room had a floor to ceiling window, but I could clearly see the deck next door. So with no window blinds, when the light in the toilet room was on at night, that means the neighbors, when on their deck could clearly see me. Not comforting. How about putting up a window blind or extending the privacy wall? No lounge chairs on the room deck You had uncomfortable metal chairs that would burn you mid day if you sat down. The room was cold at night. This is a bucket list expensive place. How about no kids or a policy of no kids under 18 or 14? We had an obnoxious family next door. The kids were unruly and loud. You could hear them late at night, you could hear the dad yelling at them. You could hear them on the pathway to from the main lodge early and late in the day, and during the afternoon quiet time. Loud games, music, fighting, talking. It really ruined the experience. Their staff and niteguards had to hear them and chose to do nothing. I said something, and nothing changed. Lastly they have these oversize rodents that run on the roof of your tent. All night long. You hear the scurrying and noise. It woke us up, it kept us up. I mentioned it to the staff and they know about it! Well put up some chicken wire to block them I got was these rodents have kind of taken over and live there now. Spoke to other guests who had some problem. Well at $2000+ a nite you all need to fix this. Would not recommend this place nor go back. That said, heard they may be closing in 2024 for 2 months to do some renovations, hopefully they address these concerns.

Dear @abmilw
Thank you so much for the time you have taken to share this feedback - both here and through your travel advisor, please rest assured it has been taken with the utmost gravity, as we hate to hear when our guests have left Angama Mara less than in love with their experience at the lodge, especially when it is delivered by a team of people who want nothing more than to delight their guests while they are on holiday.
We have looked at the tented suite you were in to understand the privacy issue, and will be making a plan there (this is the first we have had this feedback in 9 years, as it has never been brought to our attention before). You will also be pleased to hear that we had a team of experts on site earlier this year addressing the love that the Rock Hyraxes (the rodent-like animal you refer to) have for the roofs of our tented suites. These will all be secured by the end of May.
With regards to the family staying next door to you, your camp Manager Josephat did ask the family to respect that they are in a tented camp and that with only canvas between the tent walls sound carries much further on the Rift Valley, and for them to please be more understanding. Sadly, this plea went unheard or ignored. Josephat did do his very best to speak to the other guests.
We are so sorry to read that you would not consider coming back to Angama Mara - especially as we so value constructive feedback where we are shown very clearly where there is room for improvement - this is one of the many ways we can only get better.
Thank you again for the feedback - we are so appreciative of the candour.

My wife and I stayed three days for safaris. Wonderful in every wat. The staff were unbelievably helpful and friendly, from the moment we got picked up at the air strip. The food was amazing. The setting was breathtaking. We liked the baboons who visited us during our wonderful breakfasts. Wiki deserves extra thanks for being so special. Our safari guide, Jackson, was so knowledgeable and patient.

Thank you @Jack90291 for the wonderful feedback of your three day stay at Angama Mara.
Wiki has always been known for going the extra mile for his guests in his own quiet and calm way, ensuring they are beautifully looked after. Jackson is also known for his wonderfully calm manner out on safari - it sounds like you understood the magic of Angama.... the exquisite setting offset by wonderfully warm Kenyan hospitality.
We hope to welcome you back one day

Amazing place with the most incredible staff!! We were here on December 23 for three nights. You HAVE to stay here! From the location to the food and the staff and the safari’s it’s a must!

Doris and Sadera were great. They were both attentive and patient with our needs. We had a few picky eaters in our group and they made everything seamless. Safari guides Kenneth and Sophie were knowledgeable and helpful.
Rooms are hot during this time of year as the sun comes into all the windows and there’s no air conditioning. However there are ceiling fans and some
cross breeze. The local school put on a show one evening complete with popcorn and apps.

Room tip: Dress for the weather and the bugs. We brought bug jackets from Amazon and hats with mosquitoe netting. Pack lights. They do laundry!

Thank you @Jodibex for this wonderful feedback - we are so pleased you enjoyed your December stay with us.
As ever, our guests hit the nail on the head: it is the team that makes Angama Mara special, and from what I can read you had a wonderful team looking after you - especially one of our female guides Sophie!
Yes, the tents can get a little hot in the middle of summer, but once you get the fans and the cross breezes blowing and flowing, they do cool down quite quickly - not forgetting the pool for a full cool off if one would like.
We hope to welcome you back one day soon.
Thank you again

We finished a 5 night stay at Angama Mara a couple days ago and can’t stop thinking about it. And I don’t think we ever will, either. What a magical place!

The game drives, walking safari, hot air balloon ride, sundowners with the Maasai, night BBQ, in-room massage, as well as the garden and ‘Out of Africa’ picnics were all simply incredible experiences. We lucked out and saw the ‘Big 5’ within our first 24 hours — simply amazing. The property is beautiful; upon arrival, looking out at the Mara for the first time, it took our breath away (we maybe even shed a tear or two). The room was beautifully appointed, and I found myself waking up early each morning just to watch the sunset from bed with a freshly brewed cup of coffee made with the in-room French press.

But what makes Angama Mara so special is the staff who make you feel like you’re a part of their family. It’s only been a couple days and we miss them so! Hospitality at its finest, no doubt about it — I don’t think we heard a ‘no’ or ‘sorry’ from anyone on staff the entire time. They attend to and accommodate your every need. Special thanks to our butler Farida, guide Robert, and the camp manager Josephat who I can’t speak highly enough about. We might go back just to see them!

Room tip: Don’t overpack; there’s (free) laundry services. Stop by the shop early in your stay; the Maasai women can make you a custom piece.

Thank you @Alex K for this wonderful review.
It sounds like the Mara turned on her best for you with seeing the Big 5 in the first 24 hours - not uncommon, but not slam-dunk either! Thank you for giving us 5 days of your precious time, but more importantly for your very kind words about the Angama team - you are correct that they are what truly makes Angama special. Please come back again soon.
