Great place, If you come at the right time for the right price.

Reviewed Jun 8, 2024
I stayed at this resort just before in late December 2023. I have decided to break this review down into 5 major parts. Each part is a major aspect that may influence your decision when choosing if this resort is right for you, and if Cuba in general is going to be an acceptable place for your vacation.

Part 1: Booking of the trip

We (22M & 23F from Toronto, Canada) visited this resort the week before Christmas 2023. During the upcoming months we were looking into different resorts in the Cayo Coco or Cayo Guillermo area of Cuba, we decided to narrow it down to this area as there is one of the world's most beautiful beaches Playa Pillar and this area is known to be close to the local airport, meaning the transportation to all resorts in the area is at maximum 1 hour each way.

We decided to book this resort when we noticed a very good deal (around $200 CAD under the rates we had seen for months). I will not give exact cost details, but we paid under $1500 CAD for 2 people. It was booked in early November. Toronto to Cayo Coco with transportation to and from the resort included.

Part 2: Transportation to Grand Muthu Cayo Guillermo.

We arrived at Pearson airport and arrived in Cayo Coco, Cuba in 3.5 hours time. Upon arrival at the local airport, you disembark the plane directly onto the tarmac and enter into the airport on foot. You then wait in 1 of 4 passport check lanes, here they will check your passport and Cuba Travel Visa (given to us on the plane).

It is VERY hot in this airport, so prepare for that. This process will take about 45 min, but do not worry as your assigned bus will leave without you. You then acquire your checked bag after passport check and you walk out the front entrance.

Walking out of the airport, a travel advisor will be waiting for you with paper work telling you what number bus to hop onto. The bus will play party music and they also sell beers for $5 CAD. 40 min later you will arrive at the resort and go to check out.

Overall 8/10

Part 3: Room

This was one of the most impressive parts of the resort for me, we had a standard room with a king bed and it was GREAT. The room was clean, had a mini fridge, AC and 32-inch TV with some USA TV channels. The room had a large balcony with 2 chairs to enjoy the fresh air. There is a overhead shower with nice tiles surround, a marble countertop with a large sink. I have paid $200CAD for hotel rooms in Canada that are not even close to this room.

Though there was a day when there was no usable water in the room, this is just something that happens in Cuba, so prepare for it.

Overall: 9/10

Part 4: Entertainment

The resort has a total of 3 pool's, and an amazing beach. The pools have daily activities such as volley ball and other games. I was happy with the pools and also the beach (there is a bar at both of these locations).

There was also a sports bar that was open in the evenings to watch sporting events. I was able to watch Monday and Thursday night NFL in the sports bar with like-minded people, definitely one of the best spots to get a drink and have fun.

There is also a show at the theatre every night and most of these were good, I very much enjoyed the Micheal Jackson show and the Circus Show, the others were just okay, but again there is a bar at this location making any show much better.

There was also a Paid Cigar Lounge where you can purchase and smoke cigars with all the tools needed, they also have high-quality booze here for customers.

Overall: 8/10

Part 4: Food

This was unfortunately one of the issues my partner and I had with the resort. When we first arrived at this resort it was said that they were 200 people over max capacity due to the Christmas season. This is a major problem for the food lines at buffets. There is a dining hall used for breakfast and dinner and a separate buffet near the beach for lunch.

The main dining hall can seat around 300 people, and when there is the regular amount of people here I'm sure everyone can space out the time they arrive at the hall to ensure seating and adequate amounts of food, but with the amount of people there at the time was far too much to accommodate in that small area.

The food was generally bland and included lots of veggies and odd fruits. Some of the good food we had included the shredded beef, Lunch pizza at the beach, rice, build your own pasta station, grilled chicken. Unfortunately, the lines for these high-quality items were just too long, making it a poor experience.

We never went hungry but the lines were just too much and sometimes they would run out of things, this is Cuba, so prepare for it (bring snacks).

There are also full-service restaurants and we tried the Italian and International. The itailian was not good and somehow the pizza and pasta were worse than the same items at the buffet.

We were impressed by the international restaurant and we had an amazing dish of chicken cordon blu with rice, fresh bread and wine. This was a very high-class restaurant and everyone was dressed fancy to match the aesthetic. I cannot recommend this restaurant enough, wish we would of gone here twice.

Overall: 4/10

Part 5: Final Overview

Overall I was happy with the resort as the grounds were very nice and the rooms were very impressive. The entertainment was decent and I very much enjoyed some of the shows, but some were poor quality. The pools were very nice and always clean. Though the resort was majorly over capacity, the grounds never felt crowded only the buffet areas. Food was a major problem, would not attend at Christmas time again.

The staff were always very nice and deserved good tips, so please do not tip less than $1-$2 (looking at you, french people who were tipping with quarters).

I would 100% return to this resort if the price was similar to what I paid for this trip but at a less busy time of year like November or late March-April. I would not personally recommend going at Christmas or March Break as there will be major shortages.

Overall Review: 7/10
Date of stay: December 2023
Room Tip: I would not recommend going at peak times, food lines are too long.

My husband and I stayed there from May 26th to June 2nd. It was a trip for our 35th wedding anniversary!
This is a very beautiful resort and the staff are very friendly and hard working!! They do their best to make your stay enjoyable!!
Air Canada was offering a free upgrade to sea view and we were not disappointed!! Our room (room 5115) was very nice and clean with a beautiful view! We even watched dolphins in the ocean right from our balcony!!
The food at the buffet wasn’t the greatest but it was off season and maybe some shortages. At breakfast time we always had eggs, bacon, omelettes, etc. Lunch and dinner was not the greatest. Although there was always lots of pasta and there was pizza. The sandwiches and fries were good at the snack bar by the pool! There was not a great variety and very repetitive the whole week! There was not really any vegetables like lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, etc even to make a salad. The little churros stand was only open for a limited time on the Friday and Saturday that we were there!
We couldn’t get any tropical drinks while we were there…no pina coladas or anything like that. We mostly drank rum and orange juice or beer! Lobby bar had the best cappuccino!
There were other parts of the resort closed for maintenance while we were there like the gym etc. but like I said it’s off season!
The only precautions I might add are if anyone has mobility issues…the walkways are not lit up at night! They were very dark even around stairs! If you were walking along and didn’t know the stairs were there you would fall because you couldn’t see them!

Just came home from a week at Grand Muthu with my family, 4 year old and 9 month old kids. We had a wonderful week here, the grounds are super nice and well kept, pool was clear every day, beach is stunning and not too rough, our room was cleaned daily, and the staff do everything with a smile when you need something.

The resort was at lower capacity so you can see they cut back on some things (pool bar was closed), but I can’t say we experienced any shortages while there that we heard others experienced at other resorts in Cuba.

Wish they offered more options at the bar, we only had pina coladas twice, and if you’re a Diet Coke drinker like me, they didn’t have any. But the white wine at lunch and dinner was so good, and the cappuccino at the snack and lobby bar were amazing.

The a la cartes were our favourite, and especially enjoyed the Cuban lunch offered at El Jardine, don’t miss this one!

Snack bar offers ham and cheese or tuna sandwiches, these were actually really yummy and even had fries on our last day.

The grilled fish was so good at the buffet dinner, with different varieties like local catch and basa or calamari. Beef and pork was available everyday, chicken less so but was offered occasionally.

Keep in mind it’s wet season right now, so the flies and mosquitos are a lot, they really need to try to find a way to minimize the flies at the buffet. That was annoying.

We would absolutely return to this resort and made some great memories 🌊 🌴.
Go with an open mind and understand they’re doing their best with what they have. The staff work so hard and deserve the praise!

Room tip: The lunch spot serves pizza made to order, go early before they run out!

Resort is beautiful! Pathways lined with flowering trees and bushes. There are air plant gardens, cactus. Grounds immaculent! We saw a garden area with little signs with guests names in front of some trees, bushes, asked about said repeat guests.

Super friendly staff, always a smile, wave or conversation. Even the other guests here were great.

Food was delicious. Buffet was clean, lots of food choices, the pizza from the Seasky restaurant was delicous! Cute "secret garden vibe" restaurant called Le Jardin, will try on next visit

Pools, where clean lots of shade and loungers available. Husband played darts by towel exchange area. Music, various types played. The view from infinity pool is breathtaking. The beach towels are fresh smelling

The beach, loved it. Read about seaweed, no problem, water was warm and you can walk and walk and walk!

Room was amazing, clean, comfortable beds, Ceiling fan, quiet AC, rainhead shower, hot water, coffee maker, working safe, beautiful view. Absolutly no complaints!

We will be returning in the fall!
