Our Experience Was Mostly Good

Reviewed May 31, 2024
We stayed here as part of a Gate 1 tour. This is a beautiful sprawling resort with multiple pools and several restaurants and beach access right on Tamarindo Beach.

We were placed in the Tropicana area which is the adult section near the rectangular pool. They give you a map, but the room numbers don’t coincide with the map descriptions. It was a little confusing at first until you learned your way around. Part of the resort is on one side of the street, and the rest is across on the beach side. This is where all the restaurants are located. There is a nice semi-shade area with loungers near the beach, with cooling breezes from the ocean. We enjoyed some of our time here since Tamarindo is really hot, all year round.

Although the resort is beautiful, our room was very small and cramped. The bathroom was really tight. It had a very small sink area and shower (no tub). By any normal hotel standards, this was a tiny room. But, it did have a nice patio overlooking the pool and was in a quiet location. The mini fridge was handy, the AC worked very well and the beds were comfortable. Housekeeping was available daily if needed (remember no toilet paper in the commode). The TV was large but we really had to search for English speaking programming. Fortunately we didn’t spend much time inside.

The breakfast buffet at the Brisa Mar was sprawling; made to order pancakes and waffles, omelets, specialty coffees available, a variety of fruits, juices and pastries. This place had it all. We also ate here for dinner. Make sure you get a spot near the beach for some cooling breezes. The restaurants are open air, so no AC. Dinner was very good and we enjoyed the music from the Mariachis. After the beautiful sunset, we enjoyed the fire dances on the beach. They perform there most nights if there is no rain. We also ate at the pizza place for lunch, it was pretty good.

There are also lots of other restaurants within walking distance of the hotel, along with many shops nearby for souvenirs. They were reasonably priced too. This hotel is in a nice location in Tamarindo.

From the other reviews, it looks like others had different experiences depending on where their room was. Although ours was small, it was quiet, clean, comfortable, modern, and the AC worked well. Our pool area in the adult section was quiet. No loud music, no kids, not crowded. It was very pleasant. Just really surprising to see such a huge difference in opinions about the same resort. I guess we just lucked out!

Impressive beach resort! Everyone is super friendly and they’re willing to go above and beyond to make your stay enjoyable.

Brisa Mar is their restaurant right in front of the beach. It has amazing food and staff. They provide a breakfast buffet everyday. The food was fresh and the shrimp ceviche is a must try! The special attention, care and friendliness from the staff made us feel right at home. The manager Francisco and server Ariel deserve an exclusive shout out for making our stay and meals unforgettable!

We also took surf lessons with the hotel. It is a bit pricey however the special attention to detail and the way our surf instructors made us feel incredibly safe is 100% worth it. My friend and I stood up multiple times because of our great teachers. We had lots of laughs and we made new friends with this amazing experience!
Can’t forget the tour desk staff! They were very hospitable. We booked a catamaran tour but couldn’t go on the day we booked it due to our friend being overheated from the hot sun. We didn’t want to go without her so we wanted to reschedule. Initially we couldn’t because we were past the cancellation time, however they personally called the catamaran company and spoke to them for us and performed a miracle! Our trip wouldn’t have been the same without their generous hard work.

The customer service was nice at all , but my room was in the first building across the street! And it was bad , the bathroom smells bad like humidity! I do not know how to explain it !many insects in the room , big ants , many spiders in the bathroom, it was crazy .The drinks totally overpriced!
The breakfast buffet was good , large selection!

Beautiful grounds & a 5 star stay if you know what to expect!

This is a large hotel the spans what feels like a couple city blocks. The grounds are impeccably maintained. Plumeria and other gorgeous flowering plants surround the “quiet” pool and Iguana, Geckos, Coati and Howler Monkeys roam freely. The bugs are shockingly well managed (think in an eco manner, we saw them coming through with a big smoker machine that didn’t seem to be pesticides). There are some great restaurants on site (El Pelicano - see separate review) and some not so great ones (NARI). It’s a dream sunset location and an excellent surfing/swimming beach. Security in unobtrusive but present.

The price of the hotel was very reasonable from our perspective and was a great value.

All this said, it’s not perfect. Service is spotty and absolutely not high end. We didn’t need much so it wasn’t an issue for us. That said it sure would have been nice to have the Quiet pool bar opened for even a couple hours during our 5 night stay - quite frankly a missed opportunity for them too, we walked 5 minutes to a little store and bought own drinks for a fraction of the cost at the pool bar. They’re also oddly stingy about pool towels (my number one comment to the resort, I do not want to be scolded for asking for a second towel!). And don’t bother trying to get the front desk to make change for you - even to tip their own staff (lol). The house keepers, grounds staff, bellhops and security guards were warm and friendly across the board! The front desk staff and servers in the main restaurant/bar were not - so much so it makes me wonder a big about management and if they’re well treated. The free breakfast was just that, free and we were happy - they offer a wide variety of options and do so efficiently. It’s an open air buffet and I was skeptical about food safety but didn’t have any issues!!

We stayed in a 2 bed room in the Tropicana area right off the Quiet pool. These are tiny rooms but worked great for us. The AC was excellent and the room has everything you need. The rooms were immaculately clean and cared for.

We had a great stay! I would absolutely return and just be aware that it’s not a luxury resort but is instead a great value, in a great area!

Dirty rooms, poor customer service, aweful drinks and food at main hotel restaurant. Cannot even get anyone to bring you extra towels. Called several times with no success.
Positive- family pool area is nice.
Supposedly, there are some rooms that are newly updated. We switched rooms three times and still never were put in these rooms.

Room tip: Avoid staying here

If we ever wanted to stay in Tamarindo, we would definitely return to this property!
This place is an 1 1/2 from LIR airport. The surrounding streets are full of shops and restaurants and places to book tours. Tamarindo Diria offers hotels rooms and condos. We stayed in the hotel so we would have full access to all the facilities and breakfast included. The condos only permit entry to one pool and required extra fee to include breakfast but no entry to workout room.

The elevator to our floor was fast, and we never had to wait. The queen beds on room 305 and 304 were super comfy and overlooked the ocean with a beautiful shaded balcony you could use to dry your wet suits. Showers worked well with good water pressure and didn't overflow. Towels were ample and fluffy. Bed sheets were soft. Other than hearing the beautiful birds singing and the roar of the ocean, we had a restful sleep in this section, away from the traffic noises. Floors in the rooms could have used a better cleaning - they made my feet dirty whenever I walked on them. Toilet paper was a bit rough.

Swimming pool choices were convenient and excellent. To get to the biggest pool you have to cross the street but there is always a crossing guard. That pool has a swim up bar, bridges with water coming down as you pass under them, a spouting stream which provides a nice massage, and a hot tub. There are also clean modern bathrooms next to the pool. We also swam in the smaller but still very adequate pool by the lobby. There is an outdoor shower by the entry to the beach.

The beach was beautiful, but unless you swim on the side where the surfers are, there are too many rocks and churned up red seaweed to enjoy. High tide swimming was better than low tide. The ocean is better suited for surfing than swimming but swimming is possible. You will not see much fish because the waves churn up the sand. The beach itself is easy to walk on with its packed down sand and sparse sprinkling of beautiful shells.

Mariachis frequent the property and you can hear them early evening serenading the property. You also see lots of horses passing along the beach. The workout room was adequate and cool.

The customer service was outstanding when I needed help to get to a hospital for in injury I received in town on the broken sidewalks. They delivered a wheelchair, called several medical facilities to find the best one to meet my medical needs, and set up a cab service. This took a lot of stress off this emergency situation.

The kitchen staff was very quick to clear off tables from unwanted dishes. The cooks at the various buffet stations for breakfast were very efficient and friendly and made the food exactly as I wished. We ate many delicious meals at several of their conveniently located next to the property restaurants - Pelican for seafood, NARI for coal fired pizza and delicious salads, Venezia Gelati for gelato, and Brisa Mar on the hotel premises itself where they also served the all inclusive breakfasts. Every meal was exceptional and reasonably priced. The buffet breakfast changes some of the entries daily so you can explore more cuisine. Every day they served multiple types of fruit, including pineapple, apple, papaya, banana, watermelon and others. They even have a gluten free section. There were multiple dry cereal choices. At one station they made crepe-like pancakes and crispy waffles with choice of maple syrup, vanilla, chocolate, honey. Another station served made to order eggs, with all the fillings you wanted. The pastry station included fruit filled Danishes, cinnamon buns, chocolate nut cookies, biscotti, pudding cake, coconut balls, red velvet muffins, Linzer tarts, and probably a dozen more options. They had platters of local cheeses and ham. Some of the changing dishes included eggy French toast, potato croquettes, sausage, bacon, rice, beans, cooked plantains, tomato egg casserole, mixed vegetables, plus several other choices, all of which were always well stocked. The juice machines included freshly squeezed green energy juice, pineapple, orange, passion fruit, watermelon, and water. They also had lots of coffee and tea options. there were several choices of breads and a toaster. I'm sure even with what I've just listed, I've left out some other meal options! They allowed us to order breakfast meals to go for our early tours (we sometimes left 6 AM) and the buffet was stocked with much of the food, except for the hot entries, as early as 6 AM. The hot food began around 7 AM.

The property is gorgeous and you will see lots of foliage, flowers, trees, iguanas, birds, squirrels, monkeys if you look carefully. The sunsets can be very nice if the clouds permit. Just wait for the afterglow. Every morning we watched from our balcony as the staff worked hard to dry the floors from daily rainfall and replace the outdoor cushions.

Room tip: take a high ocean view room for the best sleep
