Cala Luna Boutique Hotel & Villas is celebrated for providing guests with a serene beachside location that doesn't sacrifice convenience to local attractions. While the value is sometimes questioned due to inconsistent pricing, the exceptional service and amenities, including a top-notch spa and enjoyable beach activities, often outweigh concerns. The hotel's atmosphere is frequently described as both romantic and relaxing, making it a favorite for weddings. Cleanliness is a strong suit, with pristine rooms and grounds. Spacious rooms are well-received, though a few guests mention minor issues with ants and alcohol.

My wife and I had a truly exceptional experience staying here. It’s an oasis that feels far away from the crowds of Tamarindo when in fact it’s very centrally located. The local surf breaks are all right here making this a perfect destination for discerning surf travellers who appreciate good food and wine as well as luxury accomodations.
All of the staff were attentive to our every need 24/7 in such a personable friendly way.
The dining is incredible with organic farm to table produce prepared by one of Costa Rica’s best chefs. Eating all of our meals here left us feeling nourished and refreshed. Special thanks to Walter, Danny, Charlie, Andres, Andrea, Jose, and all of the other staff who made us feel like family. We will be back!

I stayed for my birthday vacation in October and the experience was amazing.
Even though there were very few guests the attention received from the staff was very good. I stayed for five nights and six days. The check-in was very quick, as well as check out. The room I stayed was part of the hotel section and it was really clean and neat. Every detail well taken care of considering it is a boutique hotel. Very comfy queen size beds, rooms have a small sitting section in one of the corners, one table and two chairs outside the room, fridge and TV and safe box. Double sinks in the bathroom and a huge tub which is one of the best features of the room. The breakfast was included and it was amazing. The girl in the restaurant (Liberty) was very kind and talkative. Great service. The only downside was that they only had whole milk (no lactose-free or partially skimmed), and last night I wanted to have a Coke and they were all expired since they were closed for 6 months due to the pandemics. Food is really good. (Not cheap for locals, as normally main restaurants in Tama) The complete experience inside the hotel was amazing since it is submerged in the green. Huge vegetation almost you feel like you are inside a forest. The beach is few steps from the rooms, it is not completely part of the hotel since you have to cross a small road and then walk through a pathway inside a small forest. Beach at the end of this pathway is Langosta Beach. Which is very tranquil and small which can be walked from beginning to end if you want to check it out completely. All the staff was really kind, everyone strictly following health protocols requested by local health authorities due to pandemics. There is also good security at night, monitored by cameras and at least 3 guards. I will definitely come back.

My husband and I stayed at Cala Luna for four nights in February and had a great experience there. We enjoyed the boutique nature of the hotel and while all the rooms were full, it never felt overwhelming or like there were too many people around. While it is situated on the beach, it’s very rocky and not really swimmable, however, there is a complementary happy hour every night during sunset. We went to Playa Tamarindo to surf (Cala Luna offers lessons for $50 pp) and Playa Avellanos for relaxation (highly recommend). We also spent time at Cala Luna’s pool, which was refreshing and we never had trouble getting chairs. The food was great – wonderful breakfast buffet (included in our stay) and lots of fresh, healthy options for lunch and dinner. The fish cooked in papaya curry was particularly good. The service went above and beyond – the entire staff was friendly and hospitable and the front desk was helpful with suggestions and arranging taxis into town when we didn’t feel like walking. We also took advantage of the complementary yoga and workout classes, which were a nice offer and helped break up all the sitting around and drinking! The only downside to Cala Luna was the beds, particularly the pillows which we found to be really lumpy and the bedding which was a little too light when you have the A/C on. Kind of disappointing to pay $300+/night and not get great sleep, but all in all we still had a good time here and would recommend to anyone looking for a boutique hotel experience removed from the craziness of central Tamarindo.

Dear Danielle R, Thank you so much for your review! Cala Luna excels at finding the balance between happily busy, and uncomfortably crowded. This is our home, and we want all of our guests to feel comfortable and happy. You're right, the beach is much better suited for watching the sun set as you sip a cool cocktail and enjoy an ocean breeze. We love a good breakfast! That's why we offer it free to all of our guests, so that we can make sure that everyone has a chance to try it. We will definitely take your suggestions into account, and we hope to see you soon so that you can enjoy the changes! -The Cala Luna Team

I was relaxed as soon as I walked into this hotel. The open air lobby is decorated in a modern and natural way with soothing white walls and natural wood pillars supporting the roof. Check-in was easy. There is on-site parking.

The front desk attendant walked me through the beautiful open-air dining room next to the pool surrounded by lush tropical foliage. Then, onto my room. The hotel is designed in a very smart way with paths cut through mature tropical plants that surround each room. The plants provide privacy and also give the guest a gorgeous view from their room and their private patios.

The staff is very friendly and gracious. One of the maids made little towel animals for me every day and put fresh flowers in my room. The bathroom has the most amazing tub I’ve ever seen in Costa Rica. As someone who has lived here, I can tell you that tubs are a true luxury here. They are not commonly found in homes or hotels. The bathroom has double sinks. The room was immaculate. There is a safe

The pool is the perfect temperature. A pool bar that serves drinks and snacks is open all day. At the back of the property, is a little path that leads directly to a hidden beach with tide pools and the most amazing sunset views.

The hotel owns a farm which supplies the restaurant with many fresh fruits and vegetables. The food is creative and tastes great!

The hotel is located in Playa Langosta and is a 15 minute walk into the Main Street of Tamarindo

If you’re looking for amazing service and a tranquil place to relax, this is definitely it!!! My very favorite place in Costa Rica!!

I’m a bit torn on what review to give this hotel. I would happily give this hotel five stars if it were priced say around $200 a night, however, I paid around $300 or more a night, and for that, I’ll have to give it 4 stars max.

There’s nothing wrong with the hotel itself, it’s beautiful, the staff was great, it’s very pleasant, there’s a monkey family that lives in the trees, the food is great, it has breakfast included, however I just can’t see how these kind of prices are justified in Costa Rica. The fact that you can stay at the the 4 Seasons Hotel in Vail, Colorado for $350-$400 a night, makes this a hard pill to swallow.

CONS:
This hotel is a little bit of a treck from the main strip, so it requires you to walk or bike everyday, so those with mobility issues should be aware of that. You can rent a golf cart for $70 a day, which is very expensive. There is also a hotel shuttle, but you have to pay for that as well.

Water- if you like hot Showers don’t stay at this hotel. The water gets lukewarm at best, and doesn’t last long. They have a cool bathtub in the room, however you actually can’t fill it up unless you want a cold bath. We asked the front about it, and they simply said that usually
people in Costa Rica want cold baths, so it doesn’t need to be hot or warm.

You can’t swim at the beach at this hotel.

Our room was very, very basic, and underwhelming.

There’s also no gym, for those that like to workout.

We just returned home from our family trip to Costa Rica literally last night. We traveled with our teenage sons and daughter. Service, food, location ...ALL of it was wonderful! I’d return tomorrow if I could!
Donnovan was so kind and patient at the front desk... always willing to help with anything I needed.
The waiters working in the on site restaurant were fantastic- friendly and very service oriented.
The grounds of the hotel are beautiful - it feels like you are tucked away in the jungle....and every morning you will see staff cleaning and taking care of the surroundings. I personally LOVED the beach. Yes, it is rocky, but very private. And the rocks make it even more picturesque. You can take a ten minute walk to Tamarindo beach and the views are stunning. Finally, my family loved the easy access into Tamarindo. We rented a golf cart and drove into town to look around and try some of the beach front restaurants. I would love to return someday!

We traveled to Costa Rica during the week between Christmas and New Year's Day. Our experience at Cala Luna was the best that we have ever experienced in the world. The staff from check in to the restaurant were so welcoming and so genuine in their desire to ensure we had the best experience possible.

We asked that they set up tours for us and they came through within an afternoon charting out our entire week full of ATVs, horseback riding, fishing, snorkeling and a trip to the volcano. Every trip had transportation arranged and we were provided with everything we'd need during our excursion.

The villa we reserved had three bedroom, so we could all spread out or enjoy our own pool. Housekeeping serviced the villa each day leaving it sparkling clean and a different towel animal each day!

We were surprised on New Year's Eve that the staff had arranged a dinner for every guest around the pool, socially distanced with the most amazing food we had during our trip. This was followed by a fireworks display at midnight.

We also each had a massage and Camila did a fantastic job bringing sound therapy into the course of the massage for a once in a lifetime experience. The beach is a very short walk and the sunsets were beyond words.

We loved Cala Luna and Costa Rica so much that we rebooked for the same week in 2021 and can't wait to return!

The hotel is located across the street from the most beautiful beach, which is awesome and convenient for kids. The grounds of the hotel are quite nice, well kept. Staff is excellent, service is great. In the room there is a huge and gorgeous bath tub. The cons are that rooms are joined together by some flimsy doors (for guests who want to rent two rooms and make it a unit), but the doors are a poor insulation from anything. Our neighbors smoked in their room and all of their smoke ended up inside our room through the cracks near the doors. All of the conversation was also in our room. This is not a luxury stay if you are trying to get romantic with your partner or put your toddler to bed or relax alone. It's basically an overpriced dorm or a hostel. Food at hotel restaurant is overpriced and really not good. You're better off walking to a nearby restaurant or taking a taxi into town. Drinks from the hotel bar are are pretty good, if you are prepared to pay a lot.

We were greeted in a mediocre way, and were not made to feel particularly special, more of just a normal check-in and off you go.

We were not given a hotel map and that would have been a nice touch. There were a lot of things that are standard in hotels, even cheap ones, and this one lacked, even though it’s supposed to be a boutique hotel and expensive at that.

We even had to sign a waiver if we took the products from the room on check in which was poor. Made me feel like a criminal before we’d even got to the room. Any hotel bills you afterwards for anything that is taken, so this was strange.

We stayed in the private pool villa, which was a mistake for 2 people, and the big kitchen was completely unstocked for use.

For example:
No moisturizer in the rooms
No robes or slippers (cool floors - especially when raining)
No bluetooth speaker anywhere so it was silent the whole time
The pool area should be private, and was not. You could be seen from 3 sides easily.
Kitchen had NOTHING to cook with, on or ANY utensils to cook with either. Ridiculous.

There was a complimentary 5pm happy hour that was supposed to be each day. There was never one, and I saw other guests, like me hovering around the restaurant/bar area for this. We all dispersed back to our rooms each time as felt awkward asking. Poor.

For the price this place is, We were very disappointed and would not go back there. Pretty, rough coastline (not really swimmable there) and lovely breakfasts, but that was it.

Also worth noting that this is not on the beach and a long walk to town. They offer rides for $5 each way, but this should be complimentary based on their location and price.

We were sad we didn’t stay where we were staying previously, and wished we hadn’t left the jungle area.

Won’t go back.

Cala Luna is an exceptional boutique hotel with a focus on healthy lifestyle. Everything from breakfast to morning yoga is carefully thought out for their guest. The rooms are very nice and the staff extremely friendly. In fact, I would say that the best thing about the hotel is its staff - always smiling and willing to help with anything. If I had to be picky and offer something to improve, the hotel could offer a free shuttle to the city center. Since the hotel is a mile outside of the shops/restaurants, you'll need to fork over $5 each way. You could use Uber or even walk, but, if you have kids a free shuttle would be the cherry on the top for an all out 5* hotel. Regardless, I highly recommend staying here.

The hotel offers several excursions, but you are only a short walk from the town centre, where you will get a bigger choice. They offer “off roading” vehicles, but that’s not for us (too noisy). We did sea kayaking, which was great, but our particular favourite was kayaking in the mangroves, spotting the wildlife. Even if you’ve never kayaked before, give it a go, you’ll love it. Hope you have a great trip.

Hey there. We have US phones and did not purchase an international plan. Others in our party were able to text, but not sure of the phone services. The hotel allowed us a few calls as needed which was all we had planned. Internet was great and messenger from Facebook worked fine with the wifi.
