The Occidental Tamarindo receives mixed feedback from its visitors. While the hotel's proximity to the beach and the allure of live music are highlights, many guests find the atmosphere at times overwhelming and the service lacking, with reports of unresponsive staff and delays in basic amenities like towels. Travelers criticize the resort for poor value, noting overpriced features and subpar food. Cleanliness is inconsistent, with commendations for the grounds yet complaints about room upkeep. Room spaciousness and views are acknowledged, but issues with maintenance persist.

My family spent the last week at this hotel and had an incredible time. This was the first big trip together for the whole extended family (parents, siblings and partners) and we wanted a trip that would have something for everyone. We all had a blast and a big part of that was the staff at the Occidental Tamarindo.

Everyone at the hotel was very friendly. From the Entertainment staff to the servers to the grounds crew, everyone had a smile and a hola for us.

I have Celiac disease and took my GF Spanish card to my first couple meals at the buffet. Alberto and the chef Maria were absolutely wonderful. They made sure I had a specially prepared meal that was safe to eat (GF pancakes, pasta, chicken/beef/fish with roasted veggies, eggs, omelets). This made my vacation so much more relaxing as I didn’t spend any time worrying about whether or not I’d get sick. There were a few meals where I forgot the card and they weren’t around. The staff were still able to communicate what was safe to eat in the buffet and if the made to order station was safe. Being able to safely eat the food without cross-contamination is a big deal at an all inclusive is a big deal. We also had great luck at the International restaurant. The tapanyaki restaurant was accommodating but the flavour wasn’t quite there as they didn’t have any GF soy sauce. The only GF dessert was fruit which was delicious but pretty much the same as at the buffet and snack bar.

The beach was gorgeous. Not always great for swimming as the waves can be large and there can be a strong rip tide, especially near the estuary. We all enjoyed walking on the beach to Tamarindo or along the national park when the tide was out.

This is a beautiful hotel with a fantastic beach and river estuary on its door step. There’s plenty of uncrowned surf and calm swimming spots.

Our room was great with a mezzanine level for extra room and full on wildlife display on the balcony; monkeys, iguanas, hummingbirds, raccoons.....

The food was ok. Lots of fruit, some nice meat, sometimes nice veggies. Lunch and breakfast seemed better than the evening in the buffet. The main al la carte restaurant was very good with good quality steak and some seafood. The Japanese is very strange with loud cooking equipment meaning you had to shout to order your food which was misheard and you got something completely different! Food was nice though just not what you ordered. Snack bar was odd and offered very low grade hot dogs and other fried things but did have fantastic fruit always. All the food outlets are a little understaffed.

The drinks were ok; anything brand name isn’t included but the Bloody Mary’s were great.

Pool was lovely with lots of space to sit. Loungers on the beach were plentiful with lots of shade. As other reviews have said the music and microphone shouting was too loud and could even be heard on the beach which was a shame.

The evening entertainment was a little odd, sometimes quizzes or Karaoke which were confusing but mostly the shows were dance which were very good if a little samey.

The tour operator on sight who works from a palapa by the pool is wonderful. No pushy hard sell, often offering prices lower than others, anything booked is small group at the most one other family. She remembers what you’ve said before and makes suggestions which suit you and never tries to sell you something you don’t want. There are other tour operators outside the hotel on the beach who I’m less sure about, they can be confrontational if they see you buying stuff elsewhere.

All in all I’d go back!

We (party of 4), booked our trip long ago and flew out before the Corona Virus advisories. Things really blew up while we were already at the resort. Now, I have to say how very impressed I've been with how things have been handled. I see staff hosing tables and chairs down every morning, sanitizing guests hands before they can enter the buffet and cleaning each room daily.

We are unable to fly home due to flight delays at this time so we are still here. We were upgraded at no cost to a GORGEOUS comfortable suite. The staff has been AMAZING and helpful.

The wildlife just at the resort is incredible and the knowledgeable staff have been keeping the critters under control. Some of the tourists however, do not seem to understand that they shouldn't touch and feed the wild animals 🙄. Again, the staff in this regard.....top notch! They are respectful of the animals and do let them hang around IF they behave themselves.

I would 100 percent stay here again. I am legitimately here right now, leaving March 22nd. We are "stranded" until then but in the best possible care.

Thank you to the staff at Occidental for helping us enjoy ourselves in a world crisis 🙏.

100 percent recommended!

My wife, 2 daughters (6 and 3) and myself enjoyed 2 weeks in Costa Rica at Dreams Las Mareas (4 star all inclusive) after our time there was up we decided to extend our vacation and change location. We found the occidental on Expedia and thought it looked to be a good standard 4 star resort with all inclusive. Once we arrived there was no valet or bell staff to help u load the car full of cases, the young girl at the welcome podium didn’t even acknowledge that we’d arrived as she was too preoccupied on her phone.
We had booked a two bed suite and upon receiving our keys from a sorry to say but very not welcoming receptionist a bell boy helped transport our luggage to the room. The receptionist had given us a one bed room which the bell boy informed us he knew this but gave it to us anyway. After walking back to the reception we then received another room which was with 2 beds but on the ground floor. The locks on the doers looked old and worn and the garden was right behind the snack bar so the place smelt like McDonald’s. To top it off the “garden” on the room was used as a short cut to the beach by other guests so we didn’t feel particularly safe with our little ones, on top of this the safe in the room didn’t work either. After complaining once more at reception we were offered another room but once more the standard was not reflective of the images we saw on the website, the rooms were dark with poor lighting with questionably locks on the balcony doors. At this point I asked to speak to the manager to get a refund as we wanted to change our reservation to another hotel. The manager then showed us one last room with 3 beds but the standard was I fortunately the same, even the patio furniture that is on the balconies was filthy.

I explained to the manager at the time that I appreciated her support but we weren’t happy and wanted to move on and have a refund. She was fine with this but explained that we have to call Expedia as she can’t help us.

To top all this off the pool and dining areas were extremely dated and didn’t reflect at all what was advertised on the Internet

We then moved on to another hotel.

It’s been 10 days since the reservation as I’m writing this review and Expedia haven’t been able to contact the hotel, we’ve tried multiple times to speak to the resort again but there is never someone available to speak to us and no one ever calls us back.

I could not recommend this hotel to anyone if your looking for a 4 star standard for you and your family.

This is a nice resort with beautiful grounds with the beach and river estuary on its door step. It next to a national marine park with plenty of uncrowned beach for walking and swimming. You couldn’t enter the ocean in front of the resort because of the lava rocks. You entered from the marine park area. It’s not a good swimming beach, it’s primarily a surfing area with rougher waters.

We had a great room on the first floor with a walkout. In the morning we would see the monkeys, iguanas and birds from our patio.

The food was ok and not as extensive as most all-inclusive resorts. Breakfast was good and so was the lunch. The evening buffet dinners were hit or miss with limited selections.
We didn’t try the Ala Carte and Japanese restaurants. The bar by the pool was also a snack area with hot dogs, hamburgers, fries, nachos and other fried food. They had live music in this area in the afternoon around 2 pm.
The alcohol consisted of unknown brands and draught beer. In the lobby bar, they had top shelf alcohol that you could purchase for $5.00 a drink.

In the evening, they had live music in the lobby until 8:00. The band would then play in the entertainment center at 9:15. The evening entertainment shows were mostly dancing to different nationalities.
The ocean views were beautiful, especially the evening sunsets.

We did enjoy our stay and go here again.

I hate leaving a bad review, but things have really gone downhill since the last time we visited this property 2 years ago. I know things are busy at Christmas but the front desk was so understaffed and made getting a new key a 30 minute plus ordeal. Even though I have status with Barcelo we didn't get a room until after 4pm, we had been there for 5 hours and promised rooms at 3. Food was fine but nothing special. Our water was never brought to us or filled up unless we went and asked someone. They were understaffed at the buffet too. We had to go get our own water on multiple occasions and water was never filled. Getting a cork screw to open up a bottle of wine one night took over 10 minutes. There isn't a check in area like some other Barcelo's so anytime we wanted our party of 8 to sit together we had to put tables together ourselves. We even tipped our wait staff thinking that might help, but it didn't. Christmas dinner they did nothing special at all, just like any other night. At other Barcelo properties, Christmas dinner is a huge affair, (this property should go see what they do in the Dominican Republic, it's fantastic). New Years Eve they did do a nice dinner. Light reported missing in our entry way on first day, 7 days later, still no fixed light. 4 of 7 days we did not have wash clothes, bath mats or hand towels in our room. Front desk didn't have change on many occasions and never had towels at 7am when we were leaving for water tours. No guacamole or avocados at any time, they are in season there. The bellmen are amazing and the new Japanese restaurant was very special. Lots of iguanas on the property. The rooms are just rundown and the entire resort just needs a facelift. You can't get more than 2 keys per room even when 4 people are sharing a room. Chairs around the pool were hard to get as they let "Day Guests" come for the day. This seems like a great policy but NOT during the sold out holiday season. I saw 30 people check in at the front desk at 8AM and head to breakfast, which was already crowded and then as expected they took up 30 chairs at the pool area and then getting drinks at the pool bar took forever too. We won't be back. The locals and native CR are definitely a priority and as a visitor I felt like we were not a priority.

By far the worst hotel I ever been too.
I arrived at 1:45 pm and was not able to check in till 3 pm so I was kept in the lobby waiting for this time or else I would have to pay an extra 50 USD on top of the 2000 I already paid for this 75 mins.

As soon as they let me in, I could not help it but notice the long line for the buffet restaurant but It does not end there, when you get into the restaurant (takes about 30-45 mins on average) you will have to wait in 2 more lines as there is only one person serving the buffet food for the entire resort so here you go another 30 mins for that and if you have it in you another 30 for salads.

When it comes to food you have to know that there is max of five things to choose from. Rice, beans, chicken dish, pork dish and beef dish. These 5 options will remain the same through out your stay for both lunch and dinner. If you are lucky someone will bring water to your table but to get a drink its impossible.

Coming to this resort you have to know that there will be only one bar open at a time. During the day its the one close to the pool with a huge line up to get a drink. So you have to stand for 20 mins in the sun wearing a mask or else they wont serve you ( although they have plexi glass barrier but why not discipline you). All the drink are pre made and are of course watered down. When you finally get your drink and head to the pool the security comes and tells you that drinks are not allowed in there!

The hotel is overbooked all the sun beds are taken and unless you out towels the night before you will end up with no place to sit. Same goes for the night show, people would line up in and wont be let in while clearly there are many empty tables But they claim its due to COVID ! What sense is it to keep people standing closely in a line while they can be seated.

The night bar is a joke, its a cellphone and a speaker and no one ever goes there.

The room was nice however they would come clean it at 5 when we just came back from the pool to shower and when we ask that they come back in an hour they never would. So the room was never cleaned during our 5 days stay.

You will find a pool table that you have to pay to play which is not the problem but the issue is that the machine takes the money and does not work. The staff knows this but never puts a sign or try to fix it.

You could easily tell that the waiters and the servers in the resort are over worked. They never smile and throws your food on the plate in a demeaning manner.

I stayed in Costa Rica for 18 days. During these days I stayed in Hostels and Motels but they were far superior to this detention centre

First at all, the hotel doesn't follow basic pandemic protocols such as social distancing. Restaurant areas are overcrowded. The first dinner (Friday) we had I saw that certain tables weren't available with is correct but during the weekend it was really packed. The hotel looks overbooked, a lot of people everywhere (pool areas, snack area, restaurant,) Also, there is no way to book a table, so you have to wait in line for a long time before you can have breakfast, lunch or dinner, then you will see people everywhere and it’s impossible to keep an appropriate distance. That is serious and dangerous.

Second, there is no parking space, I can NOT understand how a Barcelo Hotel is offering rooms if there is no safe space for cars. I mean that's a basic feature of any type of hotel/cabin. I had to argue with security for several minutes and tread on leaving to get a parking space. It’s unbelievable. They offered me a space in the public street.

Third, the customer service is amazingly BAD, I mean really bad. If you have a problem you better solve it yourself, otherwise you will have a bad moment. The personnel don't help, don't solve and don't look available to help. For example, one of my friends ask for salad dressing and the waitress told her to go get it herself. Another example, is the way the serve the food, looks like movies shows jail dinning. They just splash the food and stare at you kind of piss off. I am not kidding; I never experienced something like that before.

Forth. Food is pretty bad and honestly, I wasn't expecting something luxurious, but food was way worse than what I expected. You can see how they recycle food from the night before, like salads and certain ingredients. In general, the menu is extremely limited and poorly prepared.

Fifth, the room was nice and clean. However, I booked 2 rooms and they gave us two separate rooms. When I say separate i was literally separated by 150/200m. We complained, but at the end we were told that there was nothing to do, they said that rooms are assigned a day before arriving and if there was a chance to get a better room, they would call us. That call never happen.

In general, I consider my stay at Barcelo Occidental Tamarindo as an awful experience and I would never recommend the hotel to anyone. I am not someone that complain a lot or write complains but this experience made me think and I think it’s important that potential visitors know about this and avoid having a terrible vacation time at Barcelo Occidental Tamarindo.

This was our second stay at the hotel. We loved it so much that we extended this time to 10
Days. By our third day we noticed that the dining experience was just not what we remembered. All the other little nitpicking things that people complain about didn’t bother us. But when your there for 10 days and you have to eat in the same place about 30 times, you want the experience to be pleasant. I sent my concerns in an email to the management and immediately had a request to meet with me. By the next meal the issues had been corrected, staff clearly had been given a “pep talk” and management was highly visible during all the meals. They were very thankful for me for pointing out my concerns and acted on my feedback immediately, and I was grateful for being listened to.

All that being said, the Staff at the occidental are what make the experience so memorable. I really hope that the hotel takes notice of those who genuinely care about people’s experiences and maybe thin out the ones who don’t seem to enjoy their jobs. There were many that made our vacation wonderful and most were there the last time we stayed.

This is more for the management, but if you go to the resort see if you can find these lovely people:
I would like to thank the lifeguard/volleyball player/ surfer who treated my tiny cut like it was a serious injury (I’m sorry I didn’t get his name because we greeted each other with Amigo/Amiga). There is a groundskeeper who makes sure that guests understand how to say “Pura Vida” if nothing else. Then there’s Carlos who tirelessly cleans the beach and the entire resort, delivers drinks and always, always has a genuine smile. Edwin the bartender has a gruff exterior at first, but once you meet him he’ll have your next drink waiting for you with a smile. By the end of your stay you will have some kind of inside joke with him. I wish I knew the name of the bartender who had the shift before him the week of 1/3-1/10 because he was also fantastic and very patient in helping me with my Spanish. Alberto at Oceana was another person who made you feel like a friend and enjoyed practicing his English while we practiced our Spanish. I would also very much like to thank Adina who was seemingly everywhere and always smiling, always helpful at breakfast in the morning and then in the bar in the afternoon. These people and some I missed are what brought us back the first time. And hopefully we will get to see them again soon!

The hotel is okay, it’s clean, small, grounds well maintained. Rooms are smallish but clean with minibar and coffee makers. One pool, but never a problem getting a lounger. The beach isn’t great for swimming, the only people in the ocean were the surfers. There’s a little river running into the ocean that was very interesting and people were in the water there. Plenty of loungers on the beach, with plenty of shade - but these rarely used. Only complaint there is all the cigarette butts.
Langosta beach is a beautiful long sandy beach, To the right is mostly volcanic rock, but a nice walk.
The staff were very friendly, helpful, and work very hard. The problem, there aren’t enough of them. The pool bar, only bar during the day, only had 2 bartenders and the lobby bar, only bar in the evening, had only 1 bartender. There was always a long lineup at both. You had to get your own drinks, no table or poolside service. Drinks not great, served in small cups, so bring your own larger cups.
The food is so so. Limited selection. Biggest problem again is lack of staff. Each half of the dining room held about 120-130 people, but never more than 2 servers doing all the work, clearing dirty dishes & resetting tables, there wasn’t a chance to provide actual service! Definitely more staff is needed. Certainly not up to Barcelo standards.
Although nice enough, i can’t give a high rating due to its poor service, the lack of swimming beach , and we were generally a bit bored in the evenings.

The people who have been there before bring insulated drink mugs and fill them with drinks, including beer, and sit near the pool. The resort provides plastic and paper containers, which they allow near the pool (in January 2024) and the crew go around and pick things up as soon as they are empty or abandoned
