Lovely Family-Owned Hotel

Review of Hostal Gonzalo
Reviewed May 31, 2024via mobile
The Hostal Gonzalo is one of several small hotels located in the same building in a quiet neighborhood central to the Prado, Reina Sophia, and Thyssen-Bornemisza museums, many restaurants, tapas places, and bars. It’s on the third floor and there’s a lift after just a few steps at the entrance.

Our room was small but comfortable, light and airy. For some reason, we could only get twin beds (and they didn’t seem to use the strategy of binding them together into a king sized bed that some hotels offer), I guess just because there are only a few rooms and the double-bedded ones were already taken. There was a wardrobe to unpack our things.

Javier and his brother Antonio were absolutely dedicated to being sure we had everything we needed. Javier made several restaurant suggestions to avoid the over-priced touristy places and eat where locals go for high value meals. There’s also a nice common space with a sitting area where we played games or read.

Very good value for the price.

This hotel was recommended by Rick Steves and you couldn’t ask for a better location! Just a few minutes walk to the Prado, Plaza Mayor and everything else! Our room was sparkling clean, QUIET and comfortable. The room had everything we needed. Perfect for seeing Madrid! Unfortunately, we got sick as soon as we arrived in Madrid and spent 5 days in the bed in our room with our kids. The staff were so helpful and bent over backwards to make sure we had everything we needed. They really went above and beyond. I absolutely recommend this hotel and when I come back to Madrid this is where I’ll be staying!

Small place in a great location. Half a block to numerous tapas bars where I drank and ate most of my meals. It is centrally located between the Puerto del Sol and the big park Buen Retiro. It's only a bit away from the Neptune statue on the Paseo del Prado and all of the big museums.
This was my primary place and I stayed there 3 times in two weeks as I did two other trips outside of Madrid. The rooms are very clean and good to come home to for a shower and sleep. The street is quiet.
Javier and the rest of the crew were very helpful and accommodating

If you want somewhere clean and comfortable at an affordable rate in the centre of Madrid, this is for you. We had two rooms for three nights and were completely satisfied with our stay. The old lift is part of the charm and the welcome and attention by the staff was excellent.

Very clean and centrally located. I unexpectedly was between moves and found myself staying about 2 weeks here. It is run by a family and they were very kind, honest, and accommodating, even when I had to leave earlier than the stay that I booked it for. Some time after a friend was scammed by her Airbnb unexpectedly, and so I recommended her to go to this place and she loved it. I do not live in Madrid anymore, but would stay next time I am in town.

This immaculately clean Hostal is the perfect base to explore central Madrid - a block away from the Prado and two blocks from the other major museums. Yet so quiet - positioned in the historic literary quarter of narrow streets with restaurants, bookstores, galleries, and even a great charity shop up the street. Javier and his brother manage the Hostal beautifully. On the third floor with a reliable small lift, the rooms and ensuites are a good size. We regard it as our base whenever we return to Madrid!
