This immaculately clean Hostal is the perfect base to explore central Madrid - a block away from the Prado and two blocks from the other major museums. Yet so quiet - positioned in the historic literary quarter of narrow streets with restaurants, bookstores, galleries, and even a great charity shop up the street. Javier and his brother manage the Hostal beautifully. On the third floor with a reliable small lift, the rooms and ensuites are a good size. We regard it as our base whenever we return to Madrid!

My partner and I recently spent six nights in Madrid. Hostal Gonzalo may not be fancy, but it met our every need. It is centrally located, near both the train station - important for day trips - and the Old Town core. The cozy and comfortable ambiance made us feel right at home. The room and private bath were safe and clean. The tariff (65 euros/night) was very reasonable. And owner Javier and his staff bent over backwards to help us. We had a last-minute passport issue that delayed our trip two days, but Javier changed our reservation without any hesitation. Upon arrival, he drew us a map to show recommended restaurants in the neighborhood (which were extremely close). He was invisible most of the time but then would seemingly pop out of nowhere whenever we needed directions or had other questions, always with a friendly and helpful demeanor. We've got a lot of places left on our travel bucket list so don't know if a return trip to Madrid will be in the cards soon, but if it were, we wouldn't hesitate to stay here again.

The Hostal Gonzalo is one of several small hotels located in the same building in a quiet neighborhood central to the Prado, Reina Sophia, and Thyssen-Bornemisza museums, many restaurants, tapas places, and bars. It’s on the third floor and there’s a lift after just a few steps at the entrance.

Our room was small but comfortable, light and airy. For some reason, we could only get twin beds (and they didn’t seem to use the strategy of binding them together into a king sized bed that some hotels offer), I guess just because there are only a few rooms and the double-bedded ones were already taken. There was a wardrobe to unpack our things.

Javier and his brother Antonio were absolutely dedicated to being sure we had everything we needed. Javier made several restaurant suggestions to avoid the over-priced touristy places and eat where locals go for high value meals. There’s also a nice common space with a sitting area where we played games or read.

Very good value for the price.

Very clean and centrally located. I unexpectedly was between moves and found myself staying about 2 weeks here. It is run by a family and they were very kind, honest, and accommodating, even when I had to leave earlier than the stay that I booked it for. Some time after a friend was scammed by her Airbnb unexpectedly, and so I recommended her to go to this place and she loved it. I do not live in Madrid anymore, but would stay next time I am in town.

This hotel was recommended by Rick Steves and you couldn’t ask for a better location! Just a few minutes walk to the Prado, Plaza Mayor and everything else! Our room was sparkling clean, QUIET and comfortable. The room had everything we needed. Perfect for seeing Madrid! Unfortunately, we got sick as soon as we arrived in Madrid and spent 5 days in the bed in our room with our kids. The staff were so helpful and bent over backwards to make sure we had everything we needed. They really went above and beyond. I absolutely recommend this hotel and when I come back to Madrid this is where I’ll be staying!

If you want somewhere clean and comfortable at an affordable rate in the centre of Madrid, this is for you. We had two rooms for three nights and were completely satisfied with our stay. The old lift is part of the charm and the welcome and attention by the staff was excellent.

In all fairness to the Hostal Gonzalo, guests sometimes do get mugged on the Madrid metro and as a result they are unable to vacate their room since they need their stolen passports and money if they are to check into a different hostal.
That is the situation we encountered when we arrived after a long transatlantic flight, "confirmed reservation" for two nights' in hand. Our Trip Advisor research had eliminated some thirty other hostels in favor of the highly-acclaimed Hostal Gonzalo. The only negative comment "One confirmed reservation, two hostels", did not carry any weight towards discouraging us. Our mistake. Hopefully, our review will alert readers to the possibility that unforeseen circumstances might ruin their planned stay at Hostal Gonzalo.
Javier, after informing us of the problem, took our luggage and walked us three blocks to a hostal located next to a very active construction site. We decided not to stay there, and searched for a decent hostal nearby which we never discovered.
Bait and switch used to be a fairly common marketing device in the U.S., especially at new car dealerships. I suspect that it is currently being practiced in Madrid from time to time at the Hostal Gonzalo.
You might want to think twice about making a reservation there unless you receive an ironclad reservation and assurance that your stay will be as confirmed. You might even request a double your money back guarantee if something unexpected occurs. (Good luck on this!) If a problem arises, write a stinging complaint in the Spanish Government's on-site "Libro de Reclamaciones" (Complaint Book) and share your experienecs with Trip Advisor readers.

Made prior reservation for a single room for friday and saturday night in early November, '05 by email. Recieved prompt response and confirmation. The hostal is very easy to get to from the airport--a short walk from Metro Banco Espans--and is ideally located near the Prado and in a very trendy nightlife district with lots of inviting tapas bars and atmospheric streets that I felt safe on despite some reports to the contrary. There is a fabulous and popular Tabena Cevantes yards away on the corner.
The hostal is very clean. My room was plain but bright with a small balcony overlooking the street and had two comfortable single beds and a sparkling new marble bathroom. The rate was 42 euros, reasonable by Madrid standards. The owner Javier is friendly and speaks excellent english.
However on Saturday morning, Javier asked if I would mind moving to another room with a double bed as there was some miscommunication with a couple wishing single beds. I agreed and went sightseeing for the day, leaving my packed bag in the room for the staff to relocate. When I returned that night, a women who did not speak english called Javier on a cellphone who informed me that the couple in question had unexpectedly arrived with childern and was given both my room and the room that I was to be relocated to, but that they had gotten me a room in another Hostal (Castro) two blocks away. The woman took me to the Hostal Castro and I was shown to a tiny room with paper thin walls and cot size beds with skimpy foam matresses on plywood slabs. To add insult to injury, the rate at the one star Castro was 40 euros -- a rip off considering the quality. I felt helpless to do much about the situation considering the language barrier and time of day and went out fuming for some drinks to dull the growing feeling of outrage.
In view of this unacceptable treatment, I would certainly advise anyone from booking ahead at the Gonzalo or planning a stay of more than one night. They should have at least not charged me for the one night I stayed as compensation for the overbooking.

My husband and I stayed at the Hostal Gonzalo from December 29-January 4. I made my reservations by emailing the hotel directly. Our rate was 50 euro/night for a double with private bath. Considering this rate was over the New Year's holiday, I felt it was excellent.

We arrived at the hotel around 7:30 in the evening by taking the metro from the airport to the Anton Martin stop. It is less than a 10 minute walk from this metro stop to the hotel. The hotel is near the end of Calle de Cervantes so don't feel nervous if you don't see it right away. Also, it helps to look for the yellow sign on the fourth floor of the building's exterior to spot the hotel at night.

As we arrived in the evening, we buzzed reception. A woman speaking only Spanish admitted us and we took a tiny elevator upstairs. Inside, we were greeted by a an elderly husband and wife team who did not speak English (we were able to communicate based upon our limited Spanish).

We were shown to our room and were pleasantly surprised. The rooms are clean, large by European standards and the bathroom was recently remodeled. We had hot water in the shower all but one morning.

Housekeeping comes by 10 in the morning if you're a late sleeper. As the hotel is also a family residence, you may not want Room 9. We were in this room and would periodically hear sounds from the family kitchen and dining room. Otherwise, the hotel was quiet.

Hostel Gonzalo is within walking distance (10-15 minutes) of the three main museums in Madrid. The hotel is also a 10-15 minute walk from Casa Patas for a flamenco show.

Be aware that they do not accept credit cards so you will need to withdrawl a sufficient amount of euros to pay in cash when you leave.

Overall, I would highly recommend this hotel to someone seeking a clean, budget hotel in a great location in Madrid.

The hostal is situated on the third floor of a large building, but there is an elevator (a very SMALL elevator that can fit 2-3 people max, but it works!) The room was decent-sized, but it was very clean. Our private bathroom was also very clean. The whole place seemed to be recently remodeled. The only bad thing was that there was no air conditioning (only a fan), and it got a little uncomfortable since Madrid happened to be having a heat wave at the time we were there. But overall, this hostal was very charming, and the owner was really courteous (he even only made us pay 50 Euro/night when the reservation stated 70 Euro/night since we opted to pay in cash.) We would definitely stay here again.
