Review of Hostal Zabala
Reviewed Oct 22, 2018via mobile
By the very humble appearance of this hostal on from the outside of it. It is basic but clean and the day manager, Sonia, is really lovely. The best room by far is downstairs in the back. The location is fabulous.

Best location ever, it’s really close to Antón Martin metro station, right at the heart of Madrid’s literary district (“Barrio de las Letras”), within short walking distance to all of the city’s most famous attractions, which made me save money from transport expenses and discover lots of charming, hidden places by simply strolling freely everywhere. There are plenty of affordable shops, bars, cafés and supermarkets nearby. This is definitely a fantastic accomodation option for those seeking the essential, for a very accessible price, without anything fancy or superfluous. The staff was really friendly and welcoming, my room was impeccably clean, the bed was very comfortable, the fan worked perfectly fine against the hot temperature (which tends to drop at night anyway). They even offered me a bigger room than the one I had booked, which was really nice and generous. I definitely found my “home” in Madrid, no doubts about it.

This place is fairly basic, 2 single beds in a small room with a small bathroom and small wardrobe and a small table, no more no less.

Visiting Madrid in August was pretty warm and we survived the night by opening the window and having the fan on consistently.

This place is very central. We literally walked everywhere.

The people who run the hostal are very nice and helpful. Even with the language barrier, we still managed to get through.

As what I have stated on my headline, I was very impressed with the cleanliness. Top mark for this.

I stayed here with my boyfriend for 5 nights recently. We found the hotel after searching for a last minute place to stay due to my boyfriend needing to take an exam resit at his university in Getafe. I was a little hesitant as the hotel only had one star, but due to reviews, we booked.

To start, I will cover the negatives.
No aircon. With temperatures at 36 degrees and above, this made for incredibly uncomfortable nights. I was a little surprised that there were no fans or any sort of cooling system, but reminded myself that it was one star. A cold shower before bed helped!

The internet seems to stop working at around 4pm, or at least slows down an awful lot. This was rather irritating as we had to spend a lot of time in the hotel room (it wasn't a leisure trip), working, and I needed internet access. During the rest of the day, the internet was perfect.

These are really the only real negatives I can come up with that isn't being really picky. The hotel is kept incredibly clean. The rooms are cleaned daily by a little team of staff. The bathroom was a lot bigger than I expected. We did pay quite a bit for this hotel, but we literally booked a day or two before we left, so it was expected. The bed was comfortable and there was a TV for those who wanted to use it. Considering how surrounded it is, the noise wasn't a problem at all. There was building work going on opposite the room, but unless you're incredibly intolerant, you can ignore it easily.

If you are looking for a very well maintained budget hotel VERY close to the center of Madrid (I've stayed in Madrid on a number of occasions and have paid way more for hotels further away from the center), this is perfect. Plenty of cafes around to get breakfast in, and supermarket literally opposite. I was a little bit of a snob before as i'd never stayed in a 1 star hotel before. Now it's changed my mind for sure.

Located very near a metro station in the center of Madrid, this small but comfortable hostal provided a nice short stay making it easy to walk right to the center. The staff were very friendly providing recommendations and advise on visiting Madrid. Would definitely return, great value for money!

Got a very good deal via an online site for a single room with en suite bath. Steps away from the Anton Martin Metro station, so very convenient from the airport or the two big train stations. A short walk to Puerta del Sol and Plaza Mayor, etc. The hostal is on the second floor with an elevator.

Positive points: Price was good, they put me in room 1 towards the back, so it was quiet (apart from the construction work going on in the neighborhood). They have improved the wifi with a signal extender so I had good wifi access. The room and bathroom seem to have been renovated fairly recently.

Negative points: The rooms are very compact. The toilet in the bathroom required a bit of contortion to use. The room had an odor or mustiness -- perhaps from smokers in the room in the past. A couple of lightbulbs needed replacement, and the shower head holder was broken. I didn't see any air conditioning units, so this place could be uncomfortable in the summer.

Overall, for just a place to sleep and clean up, it was fine. The staff I encountered were professional and courteous.

Room tip: Rooms towards the back are probably more quiet.
