Great location

Review of Hostal Gala
Reviewed May 4, 2019via mobile
Just returned from a 4 night stay at Hostal Gala with my daughter. Have to say I was a bit apprehensive to stay in a hostel as it always brings to mind dormitories and backpackers. How wrong I was. A bit hard to find as just a wooden front door with a tatty small flag above it. However once at reception the welcome was warm and friendly. The room we had was spotlessly clean, spacious with a great ensuite, and a small balcony overlooking the square. The beds were clean and comfy. The location is perfect as within walking distance of pretty much everything, Gran Via, Plaza del Mayor, Plaza del Sol, the Palace and Cathedral and the food market. Lots of bars and restaurants in the immediate vicinity and even though there are hot & cold beverage vending machines in the hostel, there is a great cafe opposite. The reception is manned 24/7 but you get your own door keys so can come and go freely.
The only downside is if your a light sleeper you may need ear plugs. The square outside attracts skateboarders until quite late, the hostel is above an Escape Room venue which obviously has some excitable moments, the internal walls are a bit thin and the floor in our room was very squeaky but then it is an old building. Overall great value for money for a great location, good size clean room with a comfy bed.

I really liked the location of this hostal. And the staff was really friendly, but the room was small and the floor squeaked like crazy. The walls were super thin. I could clearly hear people in other rooms. I didn’t sleep well during my stay because anytime I would move while sleeping the bed also squeaked loud enough to wake me. Also, there was only one outlet to use in our room.

We arrived in Spain to thorough and clear directions to access this hotel. It was well signed despite being in a building located next to the plaza. We were very pleased with our comfortable, clean room and more than pleased with the hotel's proximity to the sites, sights and thoroughfares. Staff were absolutely lovely, offering suggestions about districts and things to see, troubleshooting any issues (our aircon randomly turned off one afternoon) and even happily printing some tickets for us for no charge. A home away from home, would return here.

The Gala hostel has a perfect location if you want to spend a few days in Madrid . Most of the time you can walk everywhere and enjoying the bars and the restaurants in the center. The staff were very friendly and helpful (24/7). The room was big enough for a couple with nice bathroom. The balcony gives to the plaza(square) which is usually crowded and very noisy which can be a problem for someone who prefers silent nights.

Room tip: Room with a view to the square

It is kind of difficult to find the hotel as it is in a building. The staff was really nice and so was the room.
The only thing that was worrying to me was that I couldn’t close the door properly. Even though I closed it with the key the door would still open it by itself.
I could hear everything that was going on around my room and I had to share a single hairdryer with the whole hotel. Was kinda odd to me.
The accommodation was very well placed. It‘s 2 minutes away by foot from the grand via!
So for a few days it is absolutely fine.

This was a great location. That staff were there 24x7, and very nice/helpful. The guy that checked us in gave us some great tips on were to go and what to do. Probably one of the nicest hotel/hostel staffs I've come across.
The main problem:
Thursday and Friday night the street turns into a party area. The next morning there are beer cans and broken bottles all over the place. When we left to go to the airport there were still a group of guys outside that were drinking and tried to harass us as we walked away. This is obviously not a negative on the hostel Gala, but it's something you should be aware of if choosing it.

Bring ear plugs or noise cancellation technology if needed. My wife is not normally sensitive to noise and she couldn't sleep.

The renovations that were done look nice in the pictures but everything is very cheaply done. The bed was hard and uncomfortable. pulling the sheets bad the mattress looked about 20+ years old. The room was tiny, really tiny. The bathroom was equally small. The bed was full size, not queen.

Over all because of the location I though that it was a good value. I'm not sure I'd stay here again, but I wouldn't rule it out.

Room tip: Ask for something off the street
