Nice and cheap accomodation in Halifax

Reviewed Aug 15, 2017
A nice place to stay for a night or two in Halifax. Walking distance to City Center , Citadel, Public Gardens, Waterfront. $50 plus tax per night in a Guest House run by an 80 years old lady who has 3-4 rooms for rent and two washrooms on the hallway at the ground level. We haven't been upstairs. She is reluctant to accept cash for safety reasons. The city is very nice, if we would have known at the time of our settlement in Canada, we would have chosen Halifax as the city of our residence!
Address can be seen on Google Map, unfortunately, I couldn't paste here. 2138 Robie St. Halifax
Date of stay: July 2017
Room Tip: Low price and good location are the main reasons for this accomodation
Trip type: Travelled as a couple

The place itself is very basic/ 80's style house that is converted into a gust house. Small rooms with old beds and old decor and shared bathrooms one on each floor. However, staying there is VERY cheap! If you're in town for few days or have business in the hospital (10 minutes walk) or a university (10 minutes bus ride) then this is the best place to stay. Specially if you're travelling alone!! The owner, Helen, is so sweet and old school. She doesn't trust people at first but she's really nice and funny. She doesn't trust technology either so she does all the math in her head.
I've stayed there the very first time I've visited halifax for $30 a night!!! The service was amazing! I didn't feel that the bathroom situation was a problem for me.
She does have few unusual rules but that's ok since it's not a fancy chain hotel.
I stayed there again the following summer and then when I finally moved to Halifax I've rented a room from here on a monthly basis all winter long until I got on my feet and found my own place. The last time I stayed there she gave me the biggest room ( which has a mini fridge, toaster, kettle, sink and silverware) for the price of a single bed room! She also made sure than nobody stayed on the same floor as me so I had the bathroom to myself for 5 months! I still got housekeeping services even though I wasn't really a guest and she'd come up every few days to make sure I'm well taken care of ( she knew I was new to town and just started university).
I recommend this place to anybody who's traveling alone or even families trying to stay on budget. She even offers coffee and tea every morning until 9 or 10 am.
The place has wifi and basic cable in the rooms so it really isn't bad.
If you call for booking she does make it seem like the place is overbooked but every time I'd called ( one time I even called from Ottawa before boarding my flight ) she did hold a room for me.
Other than the outdated building and decor I really didn't see anything wrong with the place and I'd stay there in a heartbeat if I have to.
Yes parking is an issue though since the place is on a major busy street.

We were booked into a Choice Hotel and because they were overbooked they sent us to the Fountainview Guest House on Robie St. Believing it to be comparable to our original hotel, we made a booking and what a shock to find this place. It turned out to be a budget guest house that is in need of repairs and is totally outdated. We had to share one shower with all the people along with toilet facilities. The bed was so outdated that you could see right through the sheets, We had to park our car a couple of blocks away as the lady would not let us park in her yard. To make matters worse she kept on telling us the same things over and over again as if we did not understand what she was saying and she kept peeking out the front window at us.

I stayed at this no frills guest house and found the owner/hostess really spooky. She looks to be about 100 years old and does not trust a lot of people. She is from the old school and is suspicious of women travelling solo. The rooms are reasonably priced and no frills with little touches to add to charm perhaps, such as a teddy bear on the bed. The bathrooms are all shared which is a real downer and inconvenient. There is no breakfast included but hot chocolate, coffee, tea is offered for $1.50. When you check in, she questions you giving you the third degree and then finally checks you in after payment. Throughout my 2 night stay there, she kept flitting back and forth out of a room and watching me and other guests. She would do it very quickly so we would not notice. It was really creepy. If she does not trust people why does she operae a guest house, and she has been running it for many years. The first reeks of gas and the second floor is better as it has air freshener on the wall. The room on the first floor could have been cleaner and the bathroom on the second floor with tub and shower was filthy. I was happy to leave this place in the morning. Even though the rate is low, it is not worth it to stay there considering her attitude and treatment of guests. I do not recommend it. Good luck if you decide to stay there.

Room tip: Many other good hotels in the area. Helps to shop around. Avoid this place if you can.

The owner, Helen V, answered questions about the rooms available on the phone. I traveled from the USA and offered to send a cashier's check but it would not have arrived until after I did so I paid her when I arrived. She held the room on good faith until I arrived.. I choose the room with a small refrig, kettle, air conditioner, sink, double bed ($60). Full bathroom and half bathroom are in the hall outside the room. This location is perfect if you like to be across from a park-like area. The Halifax Common is a huge area where locals play baseball, walk dogs,,jog and skateboard. It was great to see such a park instead of concrete buildings. Also, it's about a 20-30 minute walk to downtown Halifax. The Halifax Public Gardens are along the way, depending which way you walk towards downtown. This guest house is NOT fancy at all - outdated wall paper, etc. but completely adequate if you're watching your budget. Hot water was always available in the showers. The bathrooms were spotless. Street parking - you may need to rotate your parking on streets though due to trash service. Helen did allow me to park in her long drive a few times though. She always moved her car onto the street in the morning. Good deal overall. Would stay here again for sure.

Room tip: Choose room with kitchen sink and air conditioning, especially in summer. Upstairs room #2 was quiet though faced the Halifax Common.

This guest house is terrible, no access to fridge and kitchen. The bathroom is not clean enough to be comfortable. lots of noise from the crowded and high traffic street. More importantly, the host is very mean; she behaves very bad and unprofessional. By and large, I don't recommend it at all. It is not worth even thinking about it.
