The place itself is very basic/ 80's style house that is converted into a gust house. Small rooms with old beds and old decor and shared bathrooms one on each floor. However, staying there is VERY cheap! If you're in town for few days or have business in the hospital (10 minutes walk) or a university (10 minutes bus ride) then this is the best place to stay. Specially if you're travelling alone!! The owner, Helen, is so sweet and old school. She doesn't trust people at first but she's really nice and funny. She doesn't trust technology either so she does all the math in her head.
I've stayed there the very first time I've visited halifax for $30 a night!!! The service was amazing! I didn't feel that the bathroom situation was a problem for me.
She does have few unusual rules but that's ok since it's not a fancy chain hotel.
I stayed there again the following summer and then when I finally moved to Halifax I've rented a room from here on a monthly basis all winter long until I got on my feet and found my own place. The last time I stayed there she gave me the biggest room ( which has a mini fridge, toaster, kettle, sink and silverware) for the price of a single bed room! She also made sure than nobody stayed on the same floor as me so I had the bathroom to myself for 5 months! I still got housekeeping services even though I wasn't really a guest and she'd come up every few days to make sure I'm well taken care of ( she knew I was new to town and just started university).
I recommend this place to anybody who's traveling alone or even families trying to stay on budget. She even offers coffee and tea every morning until 9 or 10 am.
The place has wifi and basic cable in the rooms so it really isn't bad.
If you call for booking she does make it seem like the place is overbooked but every time I'd called ( one time I even called from Ottawa before boarding my flight ) she did hold a room for me.
Other than the outdated building and decor I really didn't see anything wrong with the place and I'd stay there in a heartbeat if I have to.
Yes parking is an issue though since the place is on a major busy street.
