Hotel Halifax stands out for its prime downtown location and scenic river views, which are a hit among guests. The proximity to the boardwalk, food courts, and airport transit is a frequently praised amenity. However, some visitors have been less than impressed with the dated rooms, citing cleanliness and readiness as issues. Service quality has varied, with friendly staff sometimes overshadowed by reported delays. The value proposition is contentious; while the hotel benefits from its location and spaciousness, high costs and maintenance problems have been noted. Cleanliness overall is satisfactory, yet there's room for improvement, particularly in the pool area.

Hotel's Favourite
The hotel itself is very well laid out. Some updates would help but the staff here is the best I've ever had a pleasure of dealing with. Above and beyond customer service. Desk staff, maintenance persons. The rooms are decent size, we stayed in a Harborview room with balcony, 2 double beds. Anything we asked for was provided from parking validation, making grill cheese for my kids at front desk is amazing itself. The gentleman who reminded me of a viking came to our room to bring shower gel and was a pleasure to talk to, had a good laugh. I asked him when they started hiring vikings. There is a great pool and area. There is a 24/7 game room with 3 systems for kids and kids at heart or gamers. It's close to everything one could need as a traveler and is connected to Scotia Square and Pedway access to Casino, parking, business access , Halifax Mooseheads games are within 5 mins walk. There is construction which isn't controllable and annoying but it didn't effect us other than visually and to be honest this building is very soundproof so no issues there or interruptions. I would say the price point is close to value for amenities and rooms. I was disapointed it was advertised there is a hot tub but it wasn't in pool area and I assumed was part of the spa. There is a small fridge and coffee maker but no microwave which also was disapointing but again the front staff accomodated myself and children. When the staff actually care it makes a huge difference and all staff were very friendly and real people sharing their stories, opinions and extending a helping word or hand with everything and anything. A huge thank you to you all working here. Be proud of yourselves. I was in room 149 for 2 days.
Great job to you all. 👏

GOOD: Great location close to shops, restaurants, downtown area - walk one way from the hotel and you are along the harbourfront, walk the opposite way and you are right at the famous Citadel. The room #301 was spacious with great harbour views, king size bed, sofa, table, coffee centre. Free parking due to being an Expedia VIP member (normally you have to pay $25/day for parking).
BAD: Very Disappointed with staff at front desk who didn't speak English very fluently, stayed 4 nights and nobody cleaned our room for a single day (so much for COVID cleanliness), had to beg for clean towels and refill of used products from the coffee station - even had to ask for bathroom tissue at the front desk - highly embarrassing and shocking for this kind of service.

This hotel has been updated some—it’s clean and comfortable. The sink is outside the bathroom, to give an idea of its age, but nicely updated with new countertops and tiles. The bathroom light is set to turn on automatically when you walk into the toilet/bathtub. It turns off about 15 minutes later, which is dreadful for those who need to go to the bathroom in the night, but don’t want to wake up completely. Beds are comfortable. Staff is very polite, though they don’t always follow up with requests. It took me two days to get additional paper cups out of them. The location is handy to many places downtown, though when we were there the road work made getting into and out of the parking lot a daily puzzle. Presumably, that will resolve soon. All in all, a decent place to stay.

My husband and I stayed at The Hotel
Halifax as a getaway when his parents were in town and offered a weekend of babysitting for us. We didn’t need anything too luxurious, rather a clean and well managed hotel to relax. For the price I thought that we would have a clean room, decent privacy, and exceptional service from staff. We didn’t expect luxury and chose to stay at a lower rated Hotel because we didn’t require it for this particular stay.

The lobby was very nice, clean, and all COVID protocols were clearly displayed and very easy to follow.

Check in was when things began to go sideways. We had booked a specific room that allowed us to have a balcony and “Harbour View”. The lady at check in made me show her my booking confirmation that I was booked into a room with a Harbour view and then proceeded to “have to find a room for me”. After a brief wait and her confirming with a colleague, we were provided our keys and on our way to the room.

We made it to the room only to quickly discover that there was a humid/musty smell lingering, old food from previous guests in the refrigerator and it was evident that the carpet was not properly vacuumed. Further, our “balcony” was a shared with every other person on that floor. I decided to call the front desk to see if we could be moved to another room that was clean and had a private balcony with or without the view. After waiting 30 minutes for them to call back they said they could not accommodate. No apologies. They did offer to send someone up to retrieve the trash that was missed. When leaving Sunday morning the old food was still waiting to be picked up by staff.

The bathroom was cleaned to minimum expectation but exceptionally small. There were plenty of towels provided. The shower had good pressure but the tub was small and after looking at the grout and other spots I didn’t feel comfortable having a bath to relax. The water was hard and certainly didn’t leave a nice feeling on my skin.

The bed was comfortable but with the increased humidity and general feeling we had about the room barely being cleaned, it was difficult to feel fully comfortable. The sheets were the same quality you would expect from the dollar store and the “duvet” was old and lightly stained.

The WiFi was decent speed, but it would often kick us off (same issue with all 3 devices we were using). The TV was older but was decent and had basic cable.

We highly considered cancelling our second night but felt it wasn’t worth ruining our only time away to relax so we
stuck it out and tried to make the best of our very limit and rare time away. By Sunday at 730 were were packed and ready to go home. I couldn’t wait to have a shower in my own home.

Overall, I am embarrassed to admit that I stayed here and paid for it. I could never recommend this to anyone other than a group of younger people who are in the city to go out and explore and are spending the bare minimum time in the room. For anyone else, there are many other hotels in the area at a similar price point that will almost certainly offer a better experience.

Our room was dirty when we walked in. The sheets weren't tucked in, I am guessing the previous guests made their bed before leaving. Our modem was blinking green the entire night, which is surprising, because the wifi didn't work. None of our phones had good wifi.
The hotel is in a good location, but for what we paid with the $17 parking fee, I will choose another hotel next time, that includes free breakfast and working internet.

We did put a complaint in at the front desk and was offered a coffee for our troubles.

I will personally not choose this hotel again, based on cleanliness alone. We didn't save anything by staying here, and it was a bad sleep.

Thank you for choosing to stay at Hotel Halifax and providing your honest review. Providing the highest level of hospitality is our number one priority and we sincerely apologize for falling short of meeting your expectations regarding the WiFi and parking prices. Parking is limited and a premium in the downtown area but we apologize that this was not what you expected it to be. As a standard practice the sheets are not tucked in when the room is cleaned. We hope to welcome you back to a better experience the next time you are traveling to Halifax.

Our third stop on our tour of the maritimes was the Hotel Halifax. It had a great location close to the pier and it was connected to the indoor walkway that connected to the mall, the casino, and other hotels and businesses downtown. This was very convenient on the day it rained during our stay! The rooms were very spacious and had very comfortable beds. No issues with hot water, air conditioning or internet. An unexpected bonus was having a water refill machine on each floor to fill up reusable water bottles. There was no breakfast included but the hotel was connected to the indoor food court at the mall and there were lots of restaurants nearby. At the hotel you can pay for parking at the indoor parking garage connected to the hotel, and it allowed in and out privileges. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would highly recommended to anyone wanting to stay in the waterfront area!

The Pros: Very comfortable kingsized bed, great breakfast menu, location downtown close to the waterfront.

The Cons: very uncomfortable sofa bed, dated bathrooms, bedding for sofabed had to be requested on arrival, no room servicing because they are short staffed.

We arrive between midnight and 1 am to our king-sized room with sofabed. I had booked directly through the hotel and had stipulated 3 people including a 17yr old child. So I had expected there to be bedding for the sofa bed. We called reception and the bedding was delivered quickly but we had to make up the bed ourselves.

The sofa bed was very uncomfortable. Lots of complaints from my 17 year old which was not fun for his parents.

On day 2 at 9pm in the evening, we called reception to ask for our room to be made up and were told that it was hotel policy to only make up rooms after three nights due to staffing shortages. We had not been told at check-in, as should have happened, we were told later by the assistant manager.

Frankly if I had wanted to tidy, make beds, etc I would have stayed in an Airbnb. I feel sorry for all the wives, and mums with kids and elderly parents that w saw coming and going in as the majority of this work, making beds and tidying, definitely fell on their shoulders. Is that really a holiday!?!?

Room was fine but the bathroom was particularly dated and the bathroom fan did not work.

Lastly, struggled to open the ironing board and could not close as the metal underneath that allow it to open and close was all bent up.

I've stayed at the Hotel Halifax twice recently while on work trips. The location cannot be beat, especially in the winter, as it's connected to the Scotia Square food court and pedway system. If you want to get outside, there are several restaurants and shops a few steps away. My room (both times) was very clean, and the bed extremely comfortable. On my second stay, I had a corner room with a lovely view of Halifax harbour. This hotel is a bit dark and perhaps could use a bit of a refresh, but otherwise is a great choice. The hotel bar has Happy Hour specials and friendly staff. I ate twice in the hotel restaurant, and the seafood was fresh and delicious. I would definitely recommend it, and will likely stay again soon!

I really didn’t like this place, part of accommodations on my Road Scholar tour who regularly uses this hotel. Awkward location with highway ramps complicating access. Attached to the dying Scotia Centre, too many empty storefronts and not easy access (corridors and stairs even with the elevator). Do tour groups automatically get less desirable rooms down lengthy corridors? Place in need of overhaul. pool had standing water on tiles creating slippery surface. Meals were horrific; I took a simple yogurt and coffee for breakfast. And if you want to charge snacks at the front desk be prepared for $150 hold on your charge! And every time I talked to reception they immediately said ‘You’re in the wrong room.” No, I am in the room YOU assigned me. The staff for our buffets were nice, probably also wished they were serving better food. And you can’t use the stairs if you are on their first floor; in actuality there are 14 floors between the lobby and floor 1.

We recently spent 4 nights and 5 days in Halifax staying at the antiquated Halifax Hotel, where we booked 2 rooms for ourselves and family members. As one of the perks of being an Expedia Gold member, we were supposed to have an upgrade to our room type. Upon checking into the hotel, we were told that it was fully booked and there were no rooms to upgrade us to. Both of our rooms were located beside the elevator shaft which ran all throughout the night. Beware if you are placed in a room ending with “-18” as you will find it extremely difficult to sleep! The rooms are dated with peeling wall paper and a general musty smell.
When we spoke with the front desk the next morning, they again stated that there was no availability and that the hotel was fully booked for the entire summer! We ended up having to take up our grievances with Expedia to circumvent the most unhelpful staff at the hotel.
Twice, we had the misfortune of spotting the hotel’s resident lobby mouse. It seems that its favourite spot to hide is under the couches where unknowing hotel guests settle in. After alerting staff at the hotel about the mouse sighting, there seemed to be general complacency regarding dealing with the rodent issue. Apparently it’s nicknamed “Rocky” and according to one of the front desk staff, it has been around for months. We couldn’t help but catch sight of mouse droppings on the lobby floors. Despite wanting to check out of the hotel early due to its extreme disregard of public health measures, we were stuck at Hotel Halifax due to a shortage of rooms available at short notice and exorbitant prices. We do not recommend the hotel. While the hotel is within walking distance of the waterfront, it is located in an unsavoury part of town. Best not to roll the dice with this hotel, or else face the mice!

I believe that you will have a patio door that walks out onto a concrete courtyard. Views of the City are amazing from the 10th floor banquet/office meeting facilities. Wedding reception etc. Area. 1st floor is just convenient to pool etc.
