If I go back to Halifax, I'll definitely try to stay back there. The money saved from going to a hotel means a lot more fun around town. It's a pleasant guesthouse with 1 1/2 baths to the five rooms on my floor. There's no a/c, but we had a fan which helped at night (there was a minor heat wave when we were there!) This is not a "hotel" like Holiday Inn or Days Inn or Sheraton, so don't expect that kind of setting. The owner has her little eccentricities such as prohibiting "bed rolls" in the rooms. I think that's a sleeping bag? And there's only street parking. That wasn't too much of a problem. The best place was across the street on Robie along the park since there were no posted restrictions like the other nearby streets. The beds weren't the best, but they were clean. It's a cheap, clean, safe, convenient, no frills place to stay.

My husband and I stayed 2 separate nights here and were very happy we did. It was $50+tx for our first room, and $55+tx for our second room with a sink and fridge. It was cheaper and much nicer than staying in a hostel!
The rooms were clean, comfortable, and a good size. It was old fashioned but for this price, I'm more than happy to overlook the floral-print linen and teddy bears on the bed!
It is not a fancy or romantic hotel room, but it was comfortable, clean, and a bargain price which suited us perfectly.

Caveats (small): no WIFI (for those who neeeeed WIFI).

I've had two rooms so far (and if I keep putting off leaving Halifax, I may eventually get a third). For $30, I got a boxy, basic room on the 2nd floor. The bed was a single and there was a colour TV w. cable. The whole place is like visiting your feisty, lively senior of an aunt (which Helen, the owner, is). You're out of luck if you want trendy furniture, all mod-cons, hotel or youth hostel amenities, etc but in luck if you don't mind chintzy bedding and a stuffed animal of the kapok-kind as a bed accessory. But that's what a real guest house is all about, anyway. It's about clean, decent, basic rooms and this place is just that at an incredible price.

Located right across the street from the North Common. Got to watch softball and soccer games from the porch an my room and some street hockey tournament that seemed like it was enormously popular and a good time. The location is great. Perks coffeeshop, with WIFI is just three blocks away on the restaurant-laden Quinpool Road. Also: a large grocery store and a Canadian Tire.

Downtown is a 15 minute-ish walk around the Citadel and about a 20-minute walk to the Citadel front gate (I take walking up hills slowly).

The second room I got was $45 and was on the same floor but came with a mini fridge, mini kitchen and kettle. Roomy.

The 2nd floor I was on has two bathrooms; each with a toilet (one you basically have to sit sideways on unless you're under 5'4") and one with a bathtub and shower. Again, it was clean and serviceable.

Parking: as of now, there is a pilot project on one street for decalled-parking for local cars. This may be a problem if the project expands. However, I haven't had problems just parking one block over and one block up at a streetparking area that looks like it was developed for a small local church (which means it isn't in use except on Sunday or when a big event is happening on The Common).

This is perfect for a budget traveller or someone who just doesn't see the point of spending over $100 a night on a hotel room that will hardly be used except for sleeping and a shower.

This will definitely be my first choice of accommodation when I come back.

This guest house is terrible, no access to fridge and kitchen. The bathroom is not clean enough to be comfortable. lots of noise from the crowded and high traffic street. More importantly, the host is very mean; she behaves very bad and unprofessional. By and large, I don't recommend it at all. It is not worth even thinking about it.

We appreciated very much our stay chez Helen, while my mother was in hospital over Christmas, into January at the QEII. The rates were very good, the place is simple and homey. Helen is a lively, interesting lady with character, and accommodating with respect to the uncertain length our stay. My parents went back there to stay when my mother had to return to Halifax for a checkup.

Then on what was suppose to b the second time he stayed the he couldn't make it cause of boat delays so I called to let her know and see bout getting refund since we would not b there and she was pretty ignorant bout saying whether u stay there or not u dident get your money back ,,, which I think us absolutely disgraceful,, providing this is a place of business,,,, personally I think in order to b in thus line of business u have to have customer service skills,, b kind and curtious which U MY DEAR have none ,,,, I would absolutely not recommend this place and would pay more money any day to get customer service which I did not get here

Yes it is. It’s a short walk to the infirmary or if you decide to take the bus it’s two stops away. Both are on the same street.
