Review of Bel Jou Hotel
Reviewed Apr 2, 2024
We visited BEL JOU Hotel for 14nights in March with Kenwood travel. We selected an ocean view room as this was in celebration of our 15 year wedding anniversary. The room had a really lovely view over Castries and the sea and the balcony stayed right in the sun till 5pm ish. The room itself had 2 double beds which was a bit strange as these rooms were more expensive yet the garden rooms had a super king bed. The first thing I’d change if I were in management would be to add superkings to these rooms as there was no need for a second bed. The room was always clean, as was the bathroom and plenty of room for hanging/storing clothes. At this stage it’s worth saying we were underwhelmed with the decor and the bathroom was dated with a need to add new shower units as it leaked after use and the sink was cracked all around. The price may reflect the standard of bedroom however it wouldn’t take too much to update furniture etc as well as the entrance doors to the rooms. The air con was very effective and actually took away the sound of any background noise as this is in a residential area with a few dogs barking at night. The staff as everyone has mentioned are really helpful and friendly and will assist wherever they can. Taxis can be booked easily and Elton the local taxi man is happy to pick up and drop off at all times. The 2 pool areas were always clean with plenty of loungers. We sunbathed at the lower pool which had plenty of parasols and the self service bar was always kept topped up. Another suggestion here would be that the loungers are spread out more as some are packed like sardines. Also there are a few sets of plastic tables and chairs that just look old and for a small amount of money could be updated to make the pool area look more contemporary. The bar and food at Lulu’s cabana was well used and a lovely selection of cocktails and soft drinks. Also good to have this open after the buffet closes as you may be on an excursions and return late.
During our stay the guests were mainly British and we met lots of lovely couples which really added to the holiday experience. The general manager Dean was always visible around the hotel and happy to chat which was nice. The food in the buffet was always varied, lovely salads, soups and local food as well as desserts. We also visited the Hummingbird restaurant twice which was a nice experience although we found the service slower if booking later in the evening. Staff were a real selling point of this hotel, from Brendan, Shanel, Tinka, Princess and Nicol to many more we don’t have a name for (gardeners, maintenance, housekeeping) and of course Jahfree the entertainment and activities guy.
We would certainly recommend this hotel however wouldn’t personally return mainly due to the dated bedrooms and overall pool area. Also the beach was a short shuttle ride away and although we visited twice it didn’t make sense to be down there spending money on food and drink when we had paid for an all inclusive. Although the view down at the beach was much better than round the pool. The gym was adequately equipped and we popped in most mornings for a brief workout although the air con was broken throughout our stay so it got warm in there.
The evening entertainment was good: BBQ Night being a favourite.
Overall this hotel is definitely worth a visit and you can do so on a reasonable budget

Bel Jou is a lovely hotel set on the side of a big hill overlooking the sea with stunning views due to its elevated location.
Although not a beachfront hostel, there is a regular shuttle to take guests down to the beach and local town.
Food was delicious and had local options to try every day as well as a grown up selection of mains - no beige food!
It's a relaxing hotel, not party party, but there was nightly entertainment- usual kind of hotel fayre - but I enjoyed the Caribbean night best.
The staff are all lovely and very helpful which made our stay even more pleasant.
There are lots of stairs,no lifts, so if you have mobility issues it's not likely the hotel will work for you although you can get from the bungalows to the top pool and bar/restaurant via ramps so those are a little more accessible.
We had a lovely stay so I'd recommend the bel jou if you can't afford Jade Mountain ;-)

Where do I begin? The stay at Bel Jou was incredible. The setting is so beautiful and relaxing, with luscious gardens well tended by the groundskeepers, incredible sea views and overlooking Castries’ lights at night. Two key elements really make this hotel incredible.

We had ‘partial sea view’ rooms, these were spacious and clean, although may benefit from an update soon. Both of these had two beds, large closets and nice bathrooms but the best part was watching the sunset from the terrace.

The amenities at Bel Jou were partly what drew us to it, having the Veranda buffet restaurant overlooking the gardens, sea and Castries, the rooftop bar with even more views, the Hummingbird and la carte restaurant, two pool areas and more such as table tennis area. The amenities did not disappoint.

The hillside location means you aren’t directly beachfront which is what I would normally look for, but there are plenty of free shuttles to the local beach (Vigie beach) which has free lounge chairs for the guests, beautiful stretch of sand, amenities such as washrooms and bars but best of all, it is not full of boats in front of the beach like you get at Anse Chastanet and Sugar Beach. The fact the hotel is on the hillside means you get the glorious views and a more relaxing experience overall. To add to this experience I had a 30 minute massage at the sugar cane spa on-site which I would highly recommend.

The hotel is the smallest All-Inclusive on the island but it has to be one of the best because of its size. It is adults only but it is perfect for solo travellers, couples and adult families visiting. It does not have elevators/lifts so there are plenty of steps given the hillside location so bear that in mind if visiting.

The views are incredible, the rooms very comfortable, the amenities fantastic but what really made the experience so fantastic and forever memorable was the food/drinks and the team at the Bel Jou.

The food prepared by head Chef Alvin and his team was consistently delicious, full of variety and flavour. They even use their own-grown items from the garden. The quality of the food was reflected across the Verandah buffet and the Hummingbird a-la-carte. We had the opportunity to meet Alvin during a Creole cooking masterclass and experience first hand his passion and talent for cooking.

The best part about our stay at the Bel Jou? That has to be the team. I cannot name them all but genuinely every person at the hotel made us feel so welcome and so happy at every interaction from General Manager Dean La Force, Naila and team at the front desk, security and more. I celebrated my birthday at the a-la-carte Hummingbird restaurant and had a great time thanks to Kisha and Kasha. Vionce was so insightful and friendly at the rooftop bar. Tinika and team at Lulu’s Cabana took great care of us making drinks and desserts every day. At the Verandah buffet, all the chefs were incredibly talented, the servers Madrina, Natari, Sam, Shanel, Princess and the entire team made sure we always had a brilliant meal with a smile and island style. Jeffrey was excellent at the guest entertainment and provided us with opportunities such as listening to the best steelpan and drums on the island followed by a fire dance show on our BBQ night.

This was our first time visiting St Lucia and I would love to visit again. When I do, I will be staying at the Bel Jou because there is nowhere else I would rather stay thanks to the incredible team working there.

Room tip: Suitable for those who can handle plenty of steps as there are no elevators/lifts. Worth it for the hillside views. Try all the food you can

This is one of the best holidays we have ever experienced!
Every and I mean every member of staff are so
polite& courteous - they go out of their way (above & beyond) to make sure you have the best holiday from arrival to departure.
The bar staff made unlisted cocktails and are always positive, upbeat & happy!
Great selection of food to suit all tastes- particularly enjoyed breakfast where eggs are cooked fresh in front of you, rooms well presented & clean, the bus to the beach runs every hour for drop offs & collection with a lady waiting for you at the beach to direct you to a complimentary sun bed, small & friendly hotel in a great location on a stunningly beautiful island. We hired a car for a couple of days and saw some fantastic beaches along the way.
My husband experienced heat stroke before we returned home & the hotel staff could not have done more to help - calling paramedics to check him over before placing complimentary water back in our room. The most genuine manager who hosted a cocktail evening in the rooftop bar area. Jaffrey kept everyone entertained around the pool with aqua aerobics on a morning - the gym was well equipped and we would both whole heartedly recommend a stay here & we can’t wait to return! Missing it and all the lovely staff immensely!!!!
Thank you again to everyone for making our stay a truly memorable experience!! ❤️❤️❤️

What a wonderful 10 night stay at Bel Jou Hotel, we were very sad to leave. The hotel, garden, swimming pools and food were excellent, but it's the staff who really make your experience exceptional. They go above and beyond to make your stay as memorable as it can be, and they are so friendly and helpful. The Thursday night bbq and entertainment was wonderful. The shuttle bus down to the town of Castries and the beach was great, (as you would never want to walk it being that the hotel is at the top of a steep hill) that being said, you can see a lot of the island being that high, which at night, looks spectacular. The wildlife is amazing, lots of tiny tree frogs come out at 6pm, the humming birds out during the day. We could watch those for hours! The self serve bar by the bottom pool is a really nice touch and everything on site was spotlessly clean. Shout out to Nicole on reception who even stopped off at the supermarket for me on her way to work as I needed a personal item and the shuttle bus wasn't running that day (Wednesday) first class service, and certainly not something I would have expected or asked for.👍 my only small note for the hotel would be that it would have been nice to have another night or two of more of a "show" for entertainment, like the Thursday night. But 100% would recommend to anyone. Thanks again for a wonderful stay. Would love to come back one day.

The Bel jou hotel as got to be the best hotel I have ever stayed at and we have had many holidays in the Caribbean on different islands, the staff are so friendly and go out of their way to make sure you have a wonderful time, the food is so fresh and delicious, something for everyone's taste, the barbecue night is brilliant with fantastic entertainment , cocktail's with the manager Dean is really good, never known this in any hotel where you can just chat with the manager on a daily basis (as long as it's in the shade 😂)The other person I must mention is Jeffrey he does the entertainment and aerobics in the pool ,what a lovely, funny man and so kind he saw I had prickly heart and went out of his way to cut me some aloe vera bless him
There are so many places to go around the island which is so beautiful and the islanders are lovely people, the market in Castries is great especially on a Saturday the atmosphere is fantastic and you must visit the cathedral it's beautiful, going back to the Bel jue next year and really can't wait ,I would recommend this hotel and brilliant staff to anyone who needs a relaxing holiday .

Room tip: If you have mobility issues it's better to get a bungalow , there are a lot of steps
