My husband and I decided to tent camp at Yellowstone instead of spending hours driving back and forth to the park. The site was a nice location, just yards from a wonderful view of the river, and not far from some of the major attractions in Yellowstone. The campsites are good size. Expect to park your vehicle on the road, as all vehicles need to remain on the pavement. We got in really late our first night and were worried that there wasn't going to be anyone there to assign us or site number, but there was a camp host and a couple of rangers there to check us in. Our second night there we learned that a grizzly had marked a tree (relatively recently) 30 steps from our tent, which was kind of unnerving. We didn't have any reason to believe there was any bear activity while we were there, but there are a lot of rules to follow to make sure you don't draw in bears. Expect to spend $10/box of wood (1 cubic foot) and $4.25 for 7 pounds of ice at the little store at the campground. Bathrooms are cleaned every two hours and there are 3 stalls in the women's room, which was plenty every time I was in there. It was never crowded.

The campground is close to the West Yellowstone entrance, and is not too far from either the Upper geyser basin where Old Faithful is to the South or Norris basin to the North. Grand Prismatic is to the South and closer than the Upper.

Campsite is nice with a mercantile on site, and near the meeting of the Gibbon and Firehole rivers. Sites are reasonable size, mostly flat and washrooms have flush toilets with cold water sinks. Good size bear locker that fit a large cooler and storage tote plus a few other items. Close to the firehole falls drive. Staff were all friendly and helpful.

The downside is no showers or laundry, and it's pretty close to the main road of the busiest entrance. Our tent site was mixed with R.V.'s so a fair bit of generator noise till 8 PM and again after 8 AM. From the West Entrance to this is one of the least exciting parts of the park.

If I had to do this trip again, I'd likely opt to come in from the North and setup at Canyon which has showers, and Laundry and easy access to the grand canyon for $6 more per night.

The great thing about this campground is it’s in Yellowstone and very well located for most of the biggest attractions. Otherwise, it was not that great. There is not a lot of privacy between campsites. Also everyone has a fire and since the sites are all close together the entire place is choked with campfire smoke. It’s great to stay in Yellowstone but I would probably look at the other campgrounds first, if you’re lucky enough to have a choice

Friendly, helpful folks at check-in and camp store. There's not much privacy but even with RVs in the mix, campers adhered to quiet hours. Bathrooms are clean and well-lit. No showers. We were warned about recent bear activity in the vicinity so bear safety is critical and each campsite has food bins.

We made these reservations in advance. You do not get to pick your spot, check in went smoothly. We had a couple of trees in our spot for shade. You could see the main Park road from our site but it was quiet at night.
Dump station and water available at the dump station area.

This is an excellent campground at Yellowstone National Park. The sites are paved, with many pull throughs. The campground is on level ground too. There's no privacy though, and you can certainly hear and see others. It is fairly scenic though, and not far from Old Faithful and many other sites in the park. Bathrooms have running water, and there is a new store at the campground. Lastly, its not unusual for bison and other animals to be seen in the area, or walking through the campground. I'd stay here again.

We requested shade and were put in H273. Probably the most open spot they had. The tent was too hot to go in during the afternoon after the sun beat down all day. Right beside bathrooms. One night about midnight a group of college girls went in and stayed (to get warm I suppose) and giggled and talked for over an hour! There was no host due to Covid. At least they were open. Due to virus many campgrounds closed.

The campground was gorgeous with plenty of shade. Check in took a little while longer than it should, 25 minutes with no line. We booked 2 nights, after breakfast on our first night some ranger decided to dump the ashes from our fire into our Rubbermaid bin off CLEAN Dutch ovens, hadn’t even been used for food yet this trip, take down our hammock that was in regulations per the handout they left at the site, and most disturbingly went through our tents, mixed my clean clothes with my dirty.

Madison Campground, between West Yellowstone, Old Faithful and Norris Geyser Basin, is convenient, quiet and nicely laid out--though some sites are far more exposed than others (a few have no trees at all).
Two loops are designated tent only. An elk herd lives nearby and sometimes walks through the campground, and, in the spring, there's a resident bison herd milling around the nearby river as well.

All of the sites are perfect for folks who want to go fishing--you can walk to the Madison River from the campground--or just do a hike along the river, if you prefer. There are several trails that begin in or near the campsites. Each evening the Rangers do a campfire program as well.

The campground also provides recycling bins for your refuse, a big plus in a park often overwhelmed by garbage. Bear rules are in effect at all times, meaning food and stoves must be stored in an RV, a bear locker, or your vehicle (not inside a tent) when not in use.

No showers at the campground, but you can use the ones at Old Faithful Lodge for $3 per shower. The restrooms are heated, though, which is a plus for spring and fall campers.

Xanterra takes a long time to check you in even if you have advance reservations. Be sure to allow at least 20 or more minutes for standing in line and getting through the reservation system. The sign-in desk hours are 9 a.m. to 9 .p.m.
