The Bethel Resort & Suites receives a mixed bag of feedback from guests. Many find the hotel to fall short of providing value, pointing to outdated facilities and unexpected additional fees. Although there are instances of commendable service, reports of unresponsiveness and disorganization are not uncommon. Opinions on the atmosphere are divided, with the cozy fireplace receiving praise amidst criticism of uninspired decor. Room conditions are frequently noted for their need for updates and improved cleanliness. Nonetheless, the resort's amenities, such as golfing and dining options, are highlights for visitors, despite some calling for fresher decor.

We stayed here in January, starting with two other couples for a long weekend then my wife and I remained for the week. We have stayed here 4 times over the years. We very much liked the food and service in the Tavern and ate there twice. The breakfast buffet is high quality but pricey - we did it only once. We enjoyed the short walk to Main St with its restaurants and shops. We had a lovely afternoon snowshoeing in the sun around the golf course. Our condo unit was spacious and clean. Although we could walk a snowy path to the main inn, it was a bit far. The large living room /dining area was great for entertaining and we cooked a great meal for everyone. The bed was VERY comfortable. The bathrooms could use an update in terms of fixtures and shower curtain/rings. The Inn NEEDS a hot tub - we were disappointed by that lack after days on the slopes at Sunday River. We booked massages one day which were ... below average. But we will stay here again, I'm sure.

Thanks for you thorough review. So many of our non-skiing guests enjoy the miles of snowshoe trails and now fat tire snow biking is catching on, too. Glad you enjoyed entertaining at your Townhouse as well as dining in the Millbrook Tavern and Grille. Please take the time to say “hello” on your next visit.| Allen Connors Managing Partner

Booked a last minute mother/daughter long weekend and everything exceeded my expectations, thanks to Tori who heads up guest Services. We were booked into a Townhouse with a balcony, overlooking the Golf course and the trees and mountains in the distance. The Fall colours were glorious! The townhouse also had a wood burning fireplace and a man named John very graciously prepared it for us each day so that we could sit by the fire in the chilly evening. The kitchen had been updated and provided us with everything we needed in the way of dishes, etc. I could have stayed there for a month and we were both sad to have to leave and return to real lives. By the way, we took advantage of the spa services and received several excellent massages from Louisa. Outstanding hikes in the area and swimming in in the outdoor heated pool are a ew more of the many amenities. The Resort also boasts a very good restaurant...check out the menu on line. A final Shout-Out for Tori and the front desk staff. Heartfelt thanks.

Staff was very friendly and accommodating during these trying times. Golf course was in great shape and T-times spread out to make for an enjoyable round. The 1 bedroom condo was very spacious with good size kitchen in case you wanted to eat in. The Tavern was serving lunch and dinner daily too. Staff is constantly cleaning high touch areas and following all the CDC guidelines to keep us all safe.
Just a great place to golf and relax.

Thanks for taking the time to write. Frankly, we were surprised and pleased to see how much our golf course was used during these challenging times. Golf realty s a great way to enjoy the outdoors while still observing the Covid protocols! We’re anxiously looking forward to a busy ski season and, of course will continue to follow all CDC guidelines. Allen Connors Managing Partner

Advertised as 400 for two nights, wound up with 200 in extra fees at checkout, breakfast buffet was $20 a head. What a rip off. Room was a mile from main building, I would not recommend to anyone, much better alternatives closer to mountain.

So sorry you were disappointed with your stay. Like all other resorts, we do advertise our basic rates but all taxes and other fees are clearly shown in your confirmation and/or upon check-in. So I am surprised that you were surprised. While there are less expensive lodging choices, if you can find a full service resort with all the amenities we offer, please feel free to call me personally… I would really like to know. It's a sad tale of what used to be a beautiful historic Inn with good food and good service in a great location. The location is the same, which is why this place is still in business. The Inn is run down, needs a face lift and so does the furniture. They no longer serve dinner in the grand dining room, only the buffet breakfast. Tavern is a dirty, noisy bar-great if you like to drink and play pool-the food is terrible, microwaved and still served up cold; One of us got sick eating their old fish. And for this you have to make a reservation...not enough great restaurants nearby. Their room reservation system doesn't ensure that you get the room you selected and paid for. We were told that we didn't know how to use a website by a guest service employee. We didn't go into the separate buildings, but another individual had the same experience in a condo unit. There are several nice smaller inns in town...if you must rely on Bethel Inn for your accommodation, I suggest making the reservation by phone to make sure you get what you want and bring your own picnic. The skiing and biking and snowshoe trials were perfect, but then the Inn doesn't manage those. Beware!

Sounds like we struck out with you by not being able to fulfill your request for a specific room. For a lot of reasons, resorts and hotels can rarely, if ever, guarantee a specific room request. We can fulfill requests for specific types of rooms. But, since you were so disappointed, if you call me personally I will ensure your request is satisfied on your next visit. And I bet your dining experience in our Millbrook Tavern and Grille will be more like the “Worth the Trip” review, above. Allen Connors Managing Partner

Carol G wrote a review Aug 2023
The superior room was roomy and comfortable, although the decor is quite plain. The hotel is a beautiful old hotel but think they are doing some cost cutting that makes it no worth the cost. The crazy thing is there is no daily room cleaning and when we asked for refreshing our room, we were told we would have to pay and the amount depended on what was needed. So our trash and dirty towels piled up over our 4 night stay. We needed more soap as the small bars do not last 4 days and guess what? There was a charge to get more soap. Fortunately there was no charge for extra toilet paper. The front desk staff changed regularly and often could not answer questions. The pool was dirty and it and some buildings showed signs of disrepair. We went to the boat house and the canoes and kayaks were blocked in by a wooden raft and paddle boat making to difficult and dangerous to take a boat out. We managed with some help from another guest but clearly this was another neglected area. Breakfast was great with excellent service and we had a good dinner in the tavern. Overall the location couldn’t be better for hikers and water sports so we will definitely return to the cute town of Bethel but will be unlikely to return to the Bethel Resorts.

Hello Carol G, Thank you for your feedback. We apologize that you were given incorrect information regarding housekeeping services. Upon departure, you were given a discount to make up for the lack of housekeeping services when you voiced your concerns. We do apologize again for the misinformation. Housekeeping services are available upon request and should have been offered to you during your stay without a fee. We have a wonderful front desk staff. We have a morning and afternoon desk associate, and they are always available for guest questions. They would have been happy to assist you with boats at the Lake House or any other assistance you may have needed. Sometimes our guests do not put boats back where they belong, so we apologize that they were not readily accessible to you. Your comments upon departure did not indicate this level of unhappiness so we are greatly disappointed to hear you would be unlikely to return to our resort. We hope you reconsider. Thank you for staying with us. Sincerely, Tori Hicinbothom General Manager

I stayed at the Bethel inn for a wedding and did not enjoy my stay, my room was way overpriced and basically felt like an attic/closet. The bathroom sink was in the middle of the bedroom. Not sound proof at all. Cleaning staff came in the room without knocking when we were in there getting ready. The food was bad and they did not tell you any ingredients. I have a dairy allergy and had to ask numerous times what was in the food and basically everything had dairy so could not eat anything. We ordered the vegan dinner for the wedding and it came with a salad - with cheese on it and the dinner was 4 tiny raviolis. For the wedding party we had to get ready in a room with no mirror. They told us they would lock the door and never did. My watch was missing the next day and they were no help finding it. They also had no medical or first aid packages on the premise and was told to go down the street to purchase first aid things when an incident had occurred. During photos for the wedding we were interrupted by an angry golf course worker who put a giant pole right in front of where we were taking photos and told us it had to be there after we had reserved that space. Overall this place is awful and I would never recommend for a wedding or any type of stay. Only positive was the view and nature.

We have enjoyed the Bethel Inn for fifteen years. We enjoy the playing golf on their beautiful scenic course. The pro shop is friendly & helpful making the experience very relaxing. The condominiums all have nice decks to enjoy the beautiful mountain views. The Tavern offers outstanding service and excellent food. We felt safe, the Resort provides disinfectant, all staff wears masks , all precautions are followed.

The inn is old fashioned. That means, for example, that the door to the room no longer fit properly in its frame so we could hear noise and see light from the hallway. The sprinkler system was added to the room in the last 30 years so you can see all the pipes hanging from the ceiling. The TV had no movies. No USB charging ports. Our room was close to the dumpster so we got woken up at 5:30 am. When I mentioned this to the front desk, they didn't apologize--they said there was nothing they could do about it. We ordered room service and had to ask for the itemized bill. When we checked out, we had to ask for a receipt. There was no guidebook in the room so we had to ask the front desk where to find the lake, massage studio, restaurants, etc. Despite the advertisements for massage in the hallway next to our room, they had no massage therapists available on a Thursday in summer. The room was large and relatively clean, but there was a big black bug in the bathroom (see photo).

So sorry you were disappointed in your stay... These are unusual times and it has been difficult to maintain our four star rating since re-opening in early summer. You indeed deserved an apology and I apologize if we didn’t meet your expectations. Now that we are again in full swing, please try us again and I can assure you a satisfying visit. We do, however, suggest you reserve a massage therapist in advance, which we will be happy to take care of for you. Allen Connors Managing Partner

I stayed here on a wedding weekend in the main hotel. The staff were great to work with and the inn is beautiful and quaint. I ate and drank in the onsite restaurant as well as catered meals provided by the venue. Everything was good. My biggest complaint would be the rooms and their soundproofing or lack there of. If you have a close neighbor you will hear their every conversation next door. I tried to schedule a next day spa service and it was fully booked up for the whole weekend as well which was a disappointment. That being said, I do encourage staying here when in town for events other than skiing at Sunday River. I think it is a bit to far from the slopes and other hotels to make it worth it. Unless you want to get away from those things.
