The breakfast was great. The staff was very kind. We liked so much that we returned 2 days later for one more night.
First we stayed at a familiar suite. The shower wasn't working very well, because we did not have hot water sometimes.
In the second stay, it was a double room with an individual bed to our 9 years old son. Not as big as the suite, but comfortable enough.
We always eat in Playa Sámara, 3.5 km away. We recommend Mama Gui restaurant and Rosa's. Both nice and affordable.
2 km away from the hotel is Playa Carrillo, another paradise, specially in the week days. We'll have the beach for yourself. Magical.

While the road to the hotel was not great, that is the only negative I have about it. The rooms and property were very clean. The staff was super, wonderful and very accommodating. I ended up getting a sinus infection the last two days of my stay and the chef mothered me and upon my request made me a very delicious bowl of soup. The hotel is a five minute walk to the beach and a short drive to the local downtown area. I would highly recommend this place and most definitely would stay there again should I go back. Thank you Juan Carlos and the rest of your staff!!!

This hotel is great. Just a short walk to Playa Samara and a five minute drive to Play Corrilla. Town is just a 5 minute drive.
Rooms were sparse but comfy. The AC was great!
The staff was so kind and patient with our lack of Spanish.
Breakfast was delicious with fresh fruit and juice each morning as well as omelette, toast, and pancakes for choices.
The road to get to it is very bumpy and is gravel.
We were the only guests and they treated us so nicely!

A bit far from the city center but a very cute and clean hotel. Very helpful and friendly staff. Just yards away from the beach this hotel is great for a quiet and relaxing stay! Great working AC in the rooms as well!

My wife and I spend 3 nights during New Year's eve weekend. While when we arrived we were concerned about the location as we were traveling with some friends that were staying on a hotel in downtown Samara, it turned out to be a blessing. We were able to sleep peacefully while our friends had to deal with the noise of the "Fiestas" in downtown which didn't quiet down until the wee hours of the morning. The staff is amazing and always looking to help you out, even taking us downtown themselves when we asked for a cab! It is very close to the beach, but in the more private and secluded part of it. The food was very good, and they have happy hour on the 3rd floor deck which rocks!

This hotel was extremely disappointing to us and we moved after the first night. We were booked here on a trip through Gate One Travel. We were to stay three nights here and expected it to be the same level as we had encountered previously. To start, the area is "rustic". You walk five to seven minutes down a dirt lane to the beach on which we encountered dogs, roosters, iguana and even a wandering horse- Lots of local color here!! The rooms are small with no place to put your luggage on, and no dresser drawers, but they are very clean as we found everything to be in Costa Rica. The reception staff spoke very limited english, but made a great effort to be helpful when they knew we were unhappy with the accomodations. The female manager/owner came to the hotel, but she too spoke limited English. We spoke with with Leo the next morning and he was in another town. The reception/breakfast room/restaurant was completely open and we found it to be uncomfortably hot. Perspiring while eating breakfast doesn't lend itself to an enjoyable experience. There is a large grassy yard which all rooms look out on, but we didn't find it at all scenic although we did enjoy watching the cat lounging around all the chickens. The beach at Samara is lovely and when we moved to Flamingo Beach we missed the water and wide beach. At the beach near Sol Samara there were no lounge chairs at this location to enjoy the beach, however the hotel did offer plastic upright chairs which were around the tables on the lawn. We were traveling with my in laws and they were equally disappointed.with the hotel and I thought this review might be helpful to others.

Dear Guest: Thank for taking the time to write your feedback to us, we learn every day from you and get motivation from this to improve every day. We are sorry about the mistake of your agency booking you in our hotel that is a 3 star hotel instead of a 5 o 4 star as you expected and mentioned from the beginning of your comment. Bellboys, air conditioned restaurant, lounge chairs at the beach and concierge service are not part of our services and we don’t offer such in any of our advertising ,web page etc. We wanted to make you feel as good as possible among us with was on our reach by offering you a free dinner, no charge update to our master suite and make the necessary phone calls to your agency to get you a superior hotel in a different destination since Samara do not have 5 star hotels. Samara is a beach town full of Costa Rican flavor and hotels are managed by local families mainly. We will definitely continue working on improve our English skills, thank you for your comment and most important we hope you and your family had an enjoyable vacation in Costa Rica.

Our reservations for this hotel were listed as an "Ocean front suite". It was not until we climbed up to the second floor that we realized there was no ocean view and that the hotel was in fact not directly on the beach. The "suite" had 2 beds with 2 chairs facing them. The "balconey" overlooked a run down field. As I was looking out the window, there was a person urinating onto the fence. One of the beds reeked of urine and there was a large wasp's nest right outside the door with many wasps flying around it. My husband is allergic to stings and we carry a epi pen when we travel. Needless to say, we did not stay. The owner was nice enough to refund us our money. For this, they get 1 star.

Dear guest, we thank you for your review about the hotel and in advance we are sorry to hear it was not what you expected. First of all we don't advertise our Family Suite, or hotel for all, as ocean front or ocean view. This must have been a mistake on the agency you made your reservation; if you take a look at our website you wont find this statement anywhere. Regarding the land next to the hotel that you describe as "run down field" is out of our control to maintain it clean as it is private property, and this person you saw was there, again not much we could do about it. We are on a tropical country and animals are common and we have learned, such as our visitors, to live with them. The wasps you saw are not dangerous but honey making bees called "mariolas", they don't sting people unless they are bothered. We are sorry this situations you describe made you leave our hotel but we understood and obviously would not object to refund your money. Warm regards Hotel Sol Samara & staff

We chose this hotel based on the many excellent reviews and very few poor reviews, so I feel that I need to provide some perspective.

The good: the property itself is very nice, room very clean and air conditioned. Staff seemed nice and there is a charming outdoor eating area for the breakfast that is included.

The bad: it's a very long walk to the town of Samara, or you need a car to do the drive. As others have mentioned, it's in a "rustic" neighborhood and there's no security for parking, so patrons may want to be aware of that. Frankly, the trip to the beach is dirty and not at all nice; you would not want to hang out on the beach in the immediate vicinity especially as a single female. As we pulled up to the hotel, there was a bonfire of trash going strong on the property next door, not really what you want to be welcomed with. There are dogs and chickens wandering everywhere, including on the property, so be prepared for dogs barking until around 3am and roosters crowing at 4am. I also stayed at another hotel in Samara (which would not be considered luxury) so I know there are nicer budget places.

Honestly, I wouldn't mind the neighborhood if at least it was close to the nice part of the beach. It's too far out, with too many animals that you don't come to Costa Rica for.

We had such a great time ! The host (Brian) is really amazing, he really helped us a lot with arranging great tours and everything else we needed !
The breakfast was great and we had the possibility to choose from a variety of different options.

The hotel is not in the centre of Samara but just a few minutes by car. The location is therefore really quiet and relaxing. Around the corner there is a super market where you can get all you need.

Don't be fooled by the beautiful photos. This hotel was a huge disappointment. We actually left the first night because we were afraid we would wake up eaten alive by bugs.

ROOMS: There are holes in the doors, due to wood paneling. There are also slots where the vented windows did not cover up all the way, allowing bugs a sure entrance in. The rooms have little privacy in terms of sound. In the balcony/walkway, you can hear EVERYTHING. The appearance is nice from first glimpse, but we did look at the mattress to check for bed bugs...didn't find any but the mattress was filthy and old. The worst part was when we saw a maid taking a mattress out of the storage closet on the second floor and dragging it on the floor to a room. The storage closet was a hell-hole, with dirty mattresses stacked atop one another. This was the kicker which made us decide to check out immediately.

LOCATION: Before the mattress incident, we took a stroll to the beach. The beach is not very impressive, given the praise I had read online. The water was murky. The short neighborhood walk on the way to the beach was through a very poor residential area in which not another tourist was in sight. The houses were old and dilapidated, and there was a sign on one which read: Warning, aggressive dog. Not exactly the scenic beach hotel we had imagined. We asked the hotel receptionist if he could give us a map, and he could not. Once we arrived at the beach, we tried following the directions of the map posted at the hotel to the restaurants. We walked a little bit and could not see where "town" was. We asked some locals where the restaurants were and they said they didn't know, but they pointed us in the direction of another hotel, which was seemingly the only other sign of life in our area.

This hotel is not anywhere in close walking distance to the town of Samara. If you stay here, you are dooming yourself to a long walk to town or an almost mandatory taxi ride. The beach is not pretty, the rooms are not clean or anywhere near remotely bug-proof. This hotel, frankly, sucks. Do not waste your money.
