We stayed at the sanctuary at Grand Memories from Jan. 27-Feb. 10, 2020. The resort is spacious with the most beautiful beach and water imaginable. However, there were not enough palapas and folks were going down before 7am to get one or paying one of the locals to ensure they got one. Saw lots of folks reserving them and then not using them for hours which was very frustrating. The bar and grill staff down at the beach made up for it with their smiles and friendly service. The grill hut served homemade burgers and hot dogs etc that were a great alternative to going up to the buffet. Evelyn at the beach bar was amazing with a positive attitude and went out of her way to make sure you had the drink of your choice and remembering your usual. There was live entertainment in each of the lobbies in the evening that was top notch and had folks up and dancing and having a great time. We stayed in bungalow 59 and were lucky enough to have two wonderful butlers Lahis and Isabelle. They were always there to check on how our vacation was going and whether there was anything they could do for us. They arranged for a la carte reservations, special bubble baths, breakfast delivered hot in the mornings, cart pick ups etc. We felt so lucky to have them as our butlers. They work very hard and were always nearby from early in the morning til late at night. There was also a young girl with a long ponytail that cleaned the washrooms in sanctuary building that did an excellent job keeping them spotless despite the horrible stench at times in that area. Make sure you give her a tip in thanks for her exceptional service she really deserves it. Also special mention to the pizza maker at grand memories who was always friendly despite working long hours in a very hot environment. I could have eaten pizza everyday it was delicious. Our favourite at the buffet was the fresh pasta made to order and the fried rice made to order. The a la carte weren’t great but ok. Our favourite was the Emporium which had a fabulous waitress who was very professional. The negatives would have to be the sand fleas or no seeums which were atrocious despite wearing insect repellent. The bedding was quite stained but after scratching myself raw in spots from the bites I could understand were all the stains came from. All in all it was a great vacation which was made all the better due to the staff.

We spent a week from 11 to 18 January, this was our third time at this resort. Check-in was smooth as always took a whole 3 minutes or so. We arrived late in the evening the only place open was the lobby bar, just behind the bar where the buffet is for breakfast and lunch they make these really good pizzas that with a few glasses of wine hit the spot. Thats where I met Jordy, a real nice guy he works as a butler in one of the buildings, we hit it off right away had lots of laughs he tought me a bit of Spanish. Next day we were welcomed by Lahis who was our butler when we went last August. We met Rudy and Geilys our Butlers for the week, I must say they went out of their way to please us, Everyday we knew what restaurant we had they made sure our room was weel kept, we even had an oppurtunity to bring Rudy for dinner which was really nice. The lobby bar in the evening has great entertainment, live music, singers , dancers... we really enjoyed it. Dayron at the bar works tirelessly pouring drinks always smiling.For breakfast and lunch we always ate at the buffet and sat in the same seats so we could be served by Evlyn and Orbel and Danys they are outstanding and great dancers too. All in all we had a great vacation I highly recommend the Sanctuary if you want a nice quiet no hassel vacation. Tips are very appreciated a peso goes a long way, remember these people work really hard and are really dedicated to make your stay the best that they can....I feel at home at the Sanctuary so much so we are planning to go back in May or June .

The hotel is located in an island almost 2h from Santa Clara Airport. Memories has 3 hotels in Cayo Santa Maria: Paraiso, Grand Memories and Sanctuary. We chose the Sanctuary because it was for adults only and allowed us to use the facilities of the other two (stay at 1, Play at 3 privileges). We got the room 6070 facing east side with partial view to the ocean. The room was nice, clean and very quiet, with a excellent air-conditioned, minibar with water and soft drinks; also two bottles attached to the wall (see photo) with Rum and Coffee Liquor. Shower water pressure was not strong, but it was there all days with warm water to take good showers. Each building has a person allocated to help and answer guest questions and make reservations for restaurants. We opted to eat in buffets, with more options, taking smaller portions and decide what to repeat. Sanctuary does not offer buffets at night, so we walked 15 min to the Grand Memories (or we could take their frequent electrical minibus). The buffets offered good diversity but tend to repeat along the week, well we were in Cuba and we were not there only to eat, but also to enjoy their pools and beaches. About pools, we liked the one in Sanctuary with two levels and a bar in the middle. Usually it was very quiet in the morning and with some music and activities in the afternoon, it has plenty of lounges (no need to reserve with towels, unless you would like a specific spot). The pool in the Grand Memories was the smallest one while Paraiso has a bigger pool, but just one level. About beaches, they are beautiful with soft sand and water with colors between green and blue. There were no palms but small huts. Sanctuary had the narrow beach while Grand Memories and Paraiso had wider beaches. We liked most the Sanctuary beach because based on the tide, it had a small sand bar allowing us to take our lounge and place there surrounded by water on all sides. At the Sanctuary beach bar we got beer and burgers. It was our first experience in Cuba, we found a wonderful beach, friendly Cubans, simple, clean and comfortable rooms and pleasant pools, all reasons to go back there.

Before booking trips to Cuba or any other resort, we always like reading reviews here on Trip Advisor and so I feel compelled to share our experience here too.
Before leaving for our vacation I sent the resort an email letting them know the day we were arriving and requested a High Floor, King size bed. I got no response to my email. They assigned us a ground floor and the next day we had them move us up to the top floor. (this is what I was trying to avoid in the first place). In the new room, the air conditioner was set/fixed to 22 C and could not be adjusted only manually switched off. The phone in the room did not work and apparently as told by the butler they were aware of it for some time now. Yes, Butlers are assigned at this resort and are only good for booking your dinner reservations.
The furniture in the rooms all seems old and outdated.
The main buffet dining room is too small and even though they did have another section that could be opened and I don't know why we always had difficulty finding a place to sit for breakfast. This location Sanctuary is supposed to be the top of the three at this resort but did not seem like it. The waiters are not organized and very slow to respond. I would ask for coffee with milk for two - the waiter would go away and come back after 20 mins with two cups, coffee and milk in it, no teaspoon, and to top it off lukewarm. I have never seen anything like this at all the resorts in Cuba on past travels. Horrible!
At lunchtime time, the chefs have no idea how to cook meats. They seem more rushed than anything else. A lot of food gets wasted because of this and no one to supervise them. One day we noticed two chefs sharing one spatula!
The Sanctuary is the adult section and has one large pool area. The music from the entertainment club is too loud in the afternoons and no chance of getting a peaceful afternoon nap.
WiFi access points are spread out throughout the resort and are available also by the pool. Some access points are on but need to be reset. You cannot log in from them so just move on to another section.
Evening buffet dinners are not offered at the Sanctuary and so you have to walk or hitch a ride on the golf carts to the Memories family section. Be careful walking at night. Even though it is safe the path lights need to be installed. Some are out. The food choices at the buffet are always the same - very disappointing.
I have been to Cuba now nine times but never to the same resort twice. We always want a new experience. This one was our third 'Memories Resort', but most disappointing.

We stayed at this resort for 28 days, so we got to know the staff really well. The buildings are starting to show their age but the people who look after you make up for that. Our butlers looked after all our needs. Daymus, Jailesy, Dayanah, Richard and Dayan took our restaurant reservations every day and were there when we had concerns. The bartenders worked fast and there were hardly any line-ups for the bar. Carlos and Yuri were awesome at the pool/swim up bar and were always happy despite being busy. Down at the beach, Jesus and Evelyn were a blast. Lobby bartenders, Abel, Humberto and Yandriel were great. Don't expect Caesar's or Bloody Mary's ( they don't have Clamato juice).But expect great Mojitos and really good coffee. The beach is 5 out of 5. Bring some bug spray with Deet. The guys at the beach will take your loungers wherever you want, brush the sand off and lay your towel. Got to know Luis, Lauro, Yuri, Armando and Haillyer. Super guys. The food is getting better in Cuba. The bread and baked goods were really good. The a là cartes tried very hard and the service was excellent. The entertainment was everywhere... at the pool, lobby and the big theatre. Overall, we really enjoyed our stay at the Sanctuary. Congratulations to the staff!!

This was our second time at The This is our 2nd visit to The Sanctuary in a year. We truly loved every minute spent there. To us it was like visiting Family. Our Suite was perfect with an incredible view, always very clean and welcoming. Our Butler's Frank and Andreas were over the top they definitely surpassed a level of quality service opposing just functional. Andreas is definitely a natural talent in this industry he is a gift to your resort and company and should consider putting him on a path to Management. We love the location of this resort because it has an adorable little Market next door that allows you to walk and embrace the culture without leaving the Island. Including a nite time festival which rocks. We love also that when staying at the Sanctuary we can eat and drink and play at the other 2 resorts affiliated. Grand Memories has the best pizza on the Island... We love the way all the buffets were handled regulated and keptfresh. We only did 2 la carts this time only because we ate so much throughout the day, Italian was delicious and we did Seafood night and that was impeccable.I can tell you from our previous time last April everything was amazing at every dinner we had. The Beach bar and grill at the Sanctuary is beyond delicious and fabulous. Evelyn is one of the most beautiful souls to see at that beach bar everyday her big smile and love for her job refects!!! Osmany is apart of the entertainment team his engery and zest for life was one of my favorite parts of the day. Carlos the finest pool bartender around his kind heart and knowledge was my favorite part of ending the day in the pool and getting a fabulous bite at the pool grill. When we go to the Sanctuary we always find something beautiful to take back with us in our soul because that's how special it is.. the beaches the people the food and the atmosphere exceeds my expectations everytime I come. As a parent of 4 boys I look forward to my time there twice a year. We celebrate my husbands Birthday in December and mine in April , the staff always go over and beyond to make their guests experience the best one. I truly believe it is a Sanctuary. The hardest part is leaving but when we all say our goodbyes it's more of a see ya later, like family. Can't wait to return in April and celebrate my Birthday with my favorite humans. We decided to make a change from cruising and give an all inclusive island vacation a try. Cuba was our choice because of guaranteed beautiful beaches and this was certainly true. Our hotel was adults only which was a nice change. We stayed in bungalow 59, room 37 which was on the second floor. This room had a bit of ocean view. The room was very spacious and had everything we needed. There were no facecloths for the week which wasn’t a big deal. Towels are not changed often although we did bring our own beach towels and they supplied 2 in your room as well. Our iron was in bad shape leaving rust marks on the clothes but they changed it when I asked. The staff at this resort were always willing to please. We had 2 Butler’s who alternated shifts every day and they were amazing! They would greet you every morning and plan your a la carte dinners. The food was fine for us and we never left after a meal feeling hungry. All night pizza was great! There were several pools and plenty of room. Never had to wait for lounge chairs, plus you can go to Grand Memories or Memories and use their pools. We spent many days at the beach and would go to the Diamond Club section closer to the Grand Memories area. The staff working this area would pop out of nowhere literally and find you a lounger then lay out your towels. We walked between all 3 resorts and we also took the golf cart rides too. They are always buzzing around the place. We did one excursion, Cigar/Rum factory tour which was fun but a bit too long of a day. The drive to the resort from the airport was about 1.5 hours although the drive to go back to the airport was about 2hrs 20min and felt like forever! Overall, we loved this first island trip and will definitely return to this resort. Remember to tip these people or bring items of need, they really do work hard and appreciate you.

We discovered this gem through SunWing vacations and we were not disappointed. Excellent Butlers Mercedes and Michel building #60 helped us navigate through evening restaurant bookings at Italian Restaurant (thank you Eldis excellent service!) and Mediterrian restaurant, and answered all of our questions. Booking at this resort allows you access to all a la carte restaurants on the resort. Beaches at this resort are beautiful...you have to get up early to claim a seat under the shade beachside as they go quickly. There are 22 km of beaches along this resort and sea kayak/catamaran are readily available at nearby Grand Memories resort. We booked 1 excursion - at Buena Vista Social Club - Monday evening which included a nice meal, a cigar/cuban rum ritual with an exclusive concert with the band and pictures taking opportunities followed by entertainment in a close by larger venue with the same members. We travelled with another couple and we were all in agreement that we felt safe walking anywhere on the resort, all staff were helpful and courteous, and wanted to make this the best experience possible. Love the taxi's - especially "chicken man" who made us laugh and sing along with the music in his golf cart. We are looking forward to returning to this resort sometime in the near future.

While staying in the adults section of Sanctuary at Grand Memories Santa Maria, Leon and Janiesy, our butlers, catered to our every whim and Mayulis our housekeeper suprised us every day with beautiful fresh flowers in our very clean room. All 3 made our trip memorable, always greeting us with smiles and "what can I do fo you?". Our bungalow was just steps from either the pool or the ocean beach and both were kept very clean and comfortable. As for the food...there was always a fresh grill for sunny side eggs or fresh fish. Do not expect highly spiced or elaborate meals, but completely adequate, fresh daily choices. Everything was "homemade" from the bread and rolls (awesome) to the mini pizzas (24 hour oven, made while you wait) and breakfast potatoe cakes. (so much better than McD). I would recommend and go again.

We were looking for a return to Cayo Santa Maria and we opted for the Sanctuary, adult section of the Grand Memories. The beaches and dunes have not changed since our first stay. The ocean water is crystal clear with a light touch of seaweed collected every day. The situation is different for the availability of material and food resources and the renovation of facilities which seem to have deteriorated over the years; deterioration possibly associated with the embargo and past hurricanes. Fortunately, the kindness, availability and dedication of the staff make us forget this harsh reality. As a reference, we were able to appreciate the exceptional services of the butlers assigned to our floor (Richard, Marlon), the artistry of our maid (Kenia), the smile and the good humor of the restaurant staff or bars ( Denys, Evelyne, ...). The butler service is truly a PLUS for customers: daily reservation of an à la carte restaurant, rapid communication with the various hotel services, breakdown assistance for all circumstances, .... What more could you ask for! Congratulations to the whole team. The adult section beach has a limited number of palapas due to the limited space to do so. Other chairs are available. It will be more difficult to bear the sun in great heat. Knowledgeable, let yourself be tempted by the warmth and beauty of the beach at the Sanctuary at Grand Memories in Cayo Santa Maria.

I was also looking into this, here's what I found, "If you're at an all-inclusive resort, the US$1 every few drinks is most common. Tips for Hotel Maids in Cuba: US$1-5 per night for each night of your stay. Tips for Bellboys in Cuba: US$1-5 at check-in and the same at check out."
$1 USD is about 24 Cuban pesos, if that helps :)
There are more places to choose from in the Cayo Santa Maria area.
