Just me and 10 Yr old daughter went and plenty of wardrobe space. Mini fridge in room along with safe.
Good location next door to the Opera House. Approx 10 mins walk to Trevi Fountain and 15 mina to Pantheon and Spaniah steps.
Good 20 to 25 mins walk to Colusseum.
Plenty of bars and restaurants within easy walking distance. We rent room only to indulge in the many eateries and to explore.
Ideal base for exploring the beautiful city of Rome.
Highly recommended.
Room was very comfortable - extra pillows and towels available. Complimentary water upon arrival, and free use of the fridge. Room and bathroom were clean, and cleaned daily. Shower was great.
Area is great as not too tourist-y, but still close to a busy high street with shops & food places.
We spent here 6 nights, and I think that this hotel has some advantages:
1. Location, it is pretty close to the city centre. Termini railway station, a lot of beautiful Italian churches and Colosseum. The manager explained us that we can get to the Vatican museum by subway, it is 8 min by foot to the Republica subway.
2. Staff - very friendly and smiling
3. New furniture, plumbing
4. Cappuccino in the morning
5. Very fast wi-fi connection
But also Opera Roma has some cons
1. View from the window to the dark yard, you should ask rooms facing the street
2. Not so strong ventilation in the bathroom
3. I didn't like breakfasts, may be because I don't like sweet pies and yogurts. I suppose for men you need to find warmer and larger breakfasts outside.
I can recommend this hotel for not long trips
The room had ample dust and failed in certain touches a keen traveller would require such as a powerful hairdryer, slippers and tea coffee supplies, considering there was a kettle present.
Can see the appeal of staying here for a night not for the 4 nights over the festive period.
(I) HOTEL SONYA
The booking for three nights was made through the Italian website of booking.com. Upon arrival, I was told that I would be staying at the Hotel Opera, which I refused to accept. I showed the confirmation for reservation specifically at the Hotel Sonya but there was no realistic choice left to someone in that predicament as it was alleged that the room at the Hotel Opera was the only one available.
During the course of discussion I was told that the two hotels had the same owner and a guest booking a room at Hotel Sonya could be assigned a room at Hotel Sonya or Hotel Opera. In fact, the receptionist even mentioned that it was impossible to tell at the time of booking where one would end up in. It was therefore admitted that this practice was systematic and the use of rooms at the other hotel was not a result of circumstances beyond the hotels’ control.
It was argued that the rooms at Hotel Opera were of equal or even superior quality. However, this is not the issue. The issue here is that Hotel Sonya is deceptive. It has fraudulently lured potential customers into entering into a contract with that hotel, based on the reviews that they have read and other criteria that had been taken into consideration when deciding whether to enter into a contract with a specific hotel. This passing-off of Hotel Opera’s rooms under the selling arrangements of Hotel Sonya is at least dishonest, and deceitful and fraudulent when practised systematically. To compound this fraud, the whole set up is built on a callous exploitation of the vulnerable circumstances of travellers who are not in a position realistically to make other accommodation arrangements on the spot. Furthermore, this unpleasant experience at the start of the stay creates a sense of insecurity, not knowing what else the establishment may concoct.
(II) HOTEL OPERA
The Hotel Opera is about 150 meter from Hotel Sonya, so the location is central, with good accessibility to buses on via Nazionale and the underground at Repubblica. The room (a single) is very small and the desk is miniscule, really not suitable for work. The bathroom is small but nothing to complain about and the air conditioning works reasonably well when turned on. Internet is included in the room charge. It is not that fast and cuts out intermittently, which could be accepted for no extra charge. The breakfast room is small but the staff is pleasant enough. The cappuccino is watery. There is a fair selection of sweet and savoury items but I do not dare to try the cold cut of meat.
Due to the argument about the room, I was escorted to the room by the receptionist. I was told that there were water and soft drinks in the fridge and that it was free. It is not uncommon for some hotels in Italy and Switzerland to have a “free” minibar with soft drinks. The “free” minibar was perceived as a welcomed “perk” at the time. However, at check-out I was asked what I had consumed and was charged for it. I did mention that the receptionist who showed me the room did say that the minibar was free but was then told that, that was never the case and only the coffee/tea in the sachets. The reply was discourteous and rehearsed but I did not argue as I was determined not to let this establishment ruin my day.
One incident was at the Hotel Opera was, however, totally unacceptable. Despite the “Do Not Disturb” sign, a member of the staff entered the room without even locking. This incident alone would result in the lowest score for this hotel.
CONCLUSION
I shall never stay at any of the above mentioned hotels again. Even without the deception the rooms are over-priced. The fraudulent scheme operated by this establishment is exploitative and breaches both marketing regulations and criminal law. Unfortunately, guests who have been subject to this scheme, like myself, would not have the time and energy to take the matter further with the proper authorities in Italy. For my part, I stop at writing this review and sending this review to booking.com. I hope that the booking agents will take not of this and take action. Certainly it is not in the interests of the booking sites to be seen as complicit in the frauds perpetrated by these establishments.

I booked Hotel Roma Opera after being impressed by the rating - was #20 in Rome at the time and the prices, though not cheap, seemed okay by Rome standards.
I booked direct with the hotel via email and took advantage of the 15% discount they offered if paying 30 days or more in advance and paid in full 153 euros per night.
After an early flight from the UK we arrived to find that the room wasn't ready, which was fine, the hotel clearly states that check in time is 2pm. After a few hours sightseeing we returned and were taken to our room (102) which was on the ground floor a couple of steps from reception and the breakfast room.
On first impressions the room seemed very small and dark - the size wasn't so much of an issue, but when we drew back the curtains and opened the window slightly it appears that there was a wall directly outside and the room had absolutely no natural light.
We immediately asked reception for an alternative room but were told that there were no others, apart from a single, available until the following day but that they would move us.
It did appear from the way that we were dealt with that it probably wasn't the first time that this had happened. We were offered a "basket" with bathrobes as a kind of compensation I suppose but this never materialised.
After our early flight we tried to get a couple of hours sleep that afternoon but I was frequently disturbed by the sound of running water close by. I decided to open the "window" fully only to discover that there was no wall outside but that the "window" was simply an entrance to a maintainence chute which contained a ladder and the waste pipes from other floors and that the noise was waste coming down these pipes a few feet from our bed!!
My other concern was that as we were next to the breakfast room we would be disturbed by guests having early breakfasts at 7am. We weren't disturbed by guests the next day as we were woken at 6.15am by staff preparing for breakfast - banging crockery, scraping chairs across the floor, making coffee from a very noisy coffee machine!!, slamming doors and conversations between the various staff members.
After 30 minutes and failing to fall asleep again I complained to the reception staff who seemed unable to comprehend the problem. At this point I also asked for a discount due to the terrible room we had been given.
The area directly outside our room was also used as a dumping area for rubbish by the breakfast and cleaning staff.
We were moved on Saturday afternoon to room 207 which was very nice - the receptionist told us that as this was a superior room (and therefore an upgrade) they would only give us a 20 euro discount for the first night. We hadn't requested an upgrade, we just wanted a room which had a window and wasn't incredibly noisy!
A word of warning - if you do book a standard double you may be given room 102. When I booked the previous month there was plenty of standard double rooms available on different hotel booking websites so it feels unlikely that we were the last ones booking this standard of room. It does feel that as we had paid in full in advance we were given this room as they already had our money.
This room shouldn't be used as a hotel guest room, it was nothing more than a large storage room on the ground floor used to increase the number of rooms and therefore income for the hotel.
The reception staff were always very polite, helpful and apologetic and the room we had for the 2nd and 3rd nights was very nice but no better than a standard room you would find in an 4 star city hotel. Cleanliness was excellent, breakfast very average and location was okay - walkable to Termini but after a few times walking to the sites we started to take the Metro (very close to the hotel) and no. 64 bus - Rome is very wearing on the feet.
I completed the customer comments form they leave in the rooms with an email address (which they ask for if you would like a response) but have heard nothing.
The trip was booked as a restful break after several stressful months and unfortunately the hotel didn't give us the experience we expected.
First, the entrance is hard to find. We hauled our luggage around Rome for much longer than we needed to because the hotel is a little buried. It is in a good part of town (close to the train station and Via Nazionale), but on a small side street with little signage. I was immediately concerned when there were bars over the doors and we had to be buzzed in.
The lobby was small but the gentleman at check in was very friendly. However, our room was the major problem. I think we got room 102 that people have warned about in other reviews. I'm convinced it's a converted closet. We saw one room with a room number and then a tiny door next to it with no room number, just labeled "private". That was our room! It was so small that we could not lay our suitcases down to open them. Literally. And to walk to the bathroom, I had to walk OVER the bed because I couldn't squeeze by the space between the end of the bed and the "closet". I'm 4'11" and weigh 115 pounds. If I can't squeeze by, that's saying a lot! We tried to be optimistic and my husband opted to take a shower to start fresh. About 60 seconds into his shower, the bathroom almost flooded because the shower drain was so backed up. He had to turn off the shower every minute for a minute to let it drain before repeating the cycle. We had had enough and immediately went to another hotel around the corner on Nazionale to book a new room. (Sidenote: We had a great stay there - see my other reviews!) We then notified the front desk we'd be departing and, to their credit, the man was very sorry and repeatedly tried to upgrade us to stay. BUT why would you put someone in a bad room in the first place? Bad business and we will not be back!

A horrible experience. At check in, we were told we would have to go to a different hotel: plumbing work being done in our room. (Multiple reviews on both Expedia & Trip Advisor discussed this problem, but we did not see all of them before arriving.) I asked if there were other rooms; I was told there were no others available. I asked to see the room undergoing repairs. I was told, “That will not be possible.” I said I had a confirmation and wanted a room in the hotel I reserved. I was told I would have to stay at the other hotel. At the sister hotel I complained about the move to the staff.
I wrote a note to our travel site requesting immediate help with no response. After returning home I wrote two more complaints to the (unnamed) travel site, with responses that dismissed our problem with a comment about how we had accepted the move to the sister hotel. We were in a foreign country with no knowledge of the law related to such bait-and-switch tactics. Finding another hotel at the last minute at a reasonable price, while dragging our luggage, was not on our radar as we tried to check in.
We made a reservation & received a confirmation, just like those who reviewed this hotel & complained about having to move to the sister hotel. Opera Roma would not work with us; our travel website did nothing to help while we were in Rome, nor did they help or address my specific concerns after we returned home. Stay away from Hotel Opera Roma. The sister hotel, Hotel Sonya, was adequate and our room was clean. The staff was generally helpful and friendly.
