My bf and I just got back from 4 nights in Barcelona. We stayed at ACYH, and it was our first time staying in a hostel. We had a great experience, and I will break it down into sections...

LOCATION:
The location of the hostel is great. It is about a block from Plaza Catalunya, and a short walk to La Rambla (where La Boqueria is). There are several bus stops very close (one basically right in front of the door), and it is in between 2 metro stations. We took the airport shuttle to Plaza Catalunya and it was a very short walk to the hostel. There are several bars and restaurants nearby, as well as a couple of small grocery stores. Some people indicated difficulty locating the place. Look at the photo of the front. The brown arched doorway is unlike the others on the block.

STAFF:
I believe we saw 6 different employees working the 24 hour front desk while staying here. While all of them were friendly, the 3 guys went above our expectations and made some great suggestions for restaurants and things to do.

COMMON AREAS:
There is a refrigerator and a kitchen with cookware and dishes available to use. There is also a vending machine, and you can buy a large bottle of water from reception for €1. There are 3 computers available to use for free, as well as free wi-fi. There is a TV in the common area, but while we were there it only showed photos of Barcelona. There is a white board with things to do over the next 4 days, in case you are looking for something. The common areas (not including bathrooms) close down at midnight. If you aren't being noisy, you can probably still hang out, use the kitchen, or use the internet. If it gets too noisy, they may ask you to take the fun elsewhere, but there is a pub across the street. Some people don't like this, but I would rather have to go to the bar across the street if I'm not ready to go to bed than have to deal with people being obnoxiously noisy in the middle of the night if I want to sleep. The lockers are in a common hallway next to the office with video surveillance. This is nice because people are not making a bunch of noise getting in and out of their lockers in the dark rooms while others are sleeping.

BATHROOMS:
There are 3 toilets and 3 showers in the bathroom, along with 6 sinks. The lighting isn't very good (as a girl trying to get ready to go out at night), but it's not that big of a deal. I thought that the 3 showers wouldn't be enough, but we never had to wait for a shower to open up. There are free toiletries available that past travelers have left behind in case you need something, and towels can be rented from the front desk.

BEDROOMS:
I believe there is 1 private room and there are 2 or 3 of the 8 bed dorms. We stayed in an 8 bed dorm. There is space under the bed for stuff that you need close by or that won't fit in your locker, and there is a cubby available for each person. There are outlets in the room, but no reading lamps. I thought there was plenty of space for the 4 bunk beds. I wouldn't say the room was extremely spacious, but we weren't all on top of each other either. All you do in there is sleep anyway :)

This is really a great place to stay, and we will definitely stay there again the next time we are in Barcelona.

Everything was great with this. Cheap, clean, quiet, very nice location (just be careful to get everything printed so you'll be able to find it, nobody will know to give directions on the site).

Recommended as a traveler/explorer hostel, not a party hostel.

The Alternative Creative Youth Home was recommended to me by a friend who had stayed there a year or so before my journey and after staying there myself, I would recommend this lovely little get away to anyone. Simply one of the nicest hostels I have ever stayed in, the staff, facilities, atmosphere and location are all excellent!
A secure private entrance through a grand hallway leads you up to the 24 hour access hostel doorway where as soon as you step in you can feel the warmth and care that has been put in to this place. A small hostel in size, it has everything you will need including comfy beds, kitchen, hot showers and clean toilets, social space and free internet.
One of the staff even sat me and my friend down and helped us plan our trip around Barcelona when we checked in!
If you are looking for somewhere to stay, I highly recommend the Alternative Creative Youth Home.

The hostel has lots of good things. First of all the staff is very nice, they talk to you not only about the room and about the things you can see in Barcelona, but are really interested in you as a person. On top off that i think they have good advice on restaurants and things to see. I also think that it's nice that you can choose for a bed with nobody above you.. also the atmosphere is nice in the sence that it is quiet in the rooms at night, but during the day you can easily meet other people. Lots of people come here who travel by them self. The hostel is in a nice building.. seems like a posh space from the outside. Everything is clean and they can do your laundry if you want. They have lockers to put your belongins in.. and they advice you to take nothing with you on the street as lots of people get robbed in the streets of Barcelona. You can use the internet for free and usually there are computers free... apple computers. They have a nice common area to sit in. The location is great (near shops, restaurants, nightlife , gaudi places etc)as well and it is quiet so you can sleep well. There was a kitchen as well, which was clean. The only thing i missed was free breakfast, but you got a card with which you got to pay less in the cafe across the street. You could also use this card in other restaurants.

STAY HERE !!!

It's amazing. The staff is so nice and helpful. The location is literally in the center of Barcelona, easily accessible by Aerobus to Placa Catulunya. The facilities were always clean, the hostel has lockers under 24 hour security by their office which I found to be much safer than if they were in the rooms and could be tapered with by other people when no one was around. The people were very friendly and nice. The staff are well informed and always take a moment out to speak to you and make your stay as comfortable as possible. Upon arrival, you are given a wonderful detailed map of Barcelona and a long lost of cheap eats in the neighborhood. They let you know how to protect yourselves from thieves and recommend bars, clubs and local events to go to for free all over Barcelona. The kitchen is small but manageable. Al, the owner, is so passionate and kind. He truly cares about each and every person who walks through his doors. Truly no wonder else would capture not only the beauty and accessibility to Barcelona but the character as well. I searched every website for a week before deciding this one. Trust me, stay here !!! Not a party hostel but very homey. Worth every penny.

I loved this hostel, clean and very friendly place to be. The staff, especially Al were fantastic, and very welcoming. They provided maps n highlighted the attractions, and good cheap places to eat, and the local festivals. They were always happy to help. The rooms and bathrooms were clean and spacious, and the other people staying there were lovely. It's a bit pricier than other hostels, but definatly worth the money. I highly recommend it

alternative hostel is a quiet getaway that is a block away from the spotlight. it is close to everything (1 block away from la rambla) and literally after you come inside they can give you a map of all the nearby places and recommendations for sights to see. beds and bedding are clean, bathroom and shower area are cleaned at least once a day. also, FREE INTERNET on communal computers in the living room. most of all though, they have 24 hour security as theft is a very prominent problem in barcelona right now. very nice place, i'd recommend this.

I spent a week here in June as a solo traveller while seeing Barcelona for the first time. I’ve been travelling for >6 months now so have seen my fair share of hostels! This is situated in a lovely building in the perfect location but that’s about where the good points end. The hostel was very full and it was almost exclusively Eastern European men wandering around topless and shouting to each other loudly. As the only female in my 8 bed dorm I felt pretty uncomfortable especially as they were drinking a lot in the room until late at night. I asked to move rooms and was told I was the only woman in the whole hostel. This certainly didn’t make me feel any better! After two days when a few other women did arrive they were spread around the hostel and I spent at least one more night as the only female in the room (I really think from a safety perspective hostels should try not to do this if possible). The kitchen is fine but very small. Free tea, coffee and biscuits. Showers are push button ones and one of them was only on a 3 second timer making hair washing a real challenge!! Overall I felt very uncomfortable in the common areas and in my dorm and felt the staff were unfriendly and unhelpful. I would not recommend staying here.

Response from Alvand, Manager at Alternative Creative Youth Hostel Barcelona
Responded Jul 25, 2018
Hello Isabel, thank you for sharing your experience. I am deeply sorry that you felt uncomfortable during your stay. However, if you know so much about hostels, I assume you know how to book one that is not mixed. ACYH has mixed bedrooms, and if some week we have more reservations from men, we cannot keep people from booking a bed based on their gender. We also accept everyone, regardless of where they are coming from. Moreover, if some guests are causing trouble in the hostel, you can always come to the staff who is available 24/7, which you did not.

I was incredibly impressed with this hostel, it was clean, homely and a perfect size for people travelling alone. The location couldn't be more ideal (less than 100m from Plaza de Catlaunya). I stayed in a few hostels in the same week in Barcelona central but none compared to this. Staff are friendly and help with anything including their own favourite places to go in the city.
