We stayed at the treehouses for three nights at the start of January. There are lots of great things about this place - the secluded location, the sounds of the jungle, the cenote in walking distance and the food in the restaurant. The rooms are also clean and well designed, but there are a few things to be aware of before booking. The great location means driving a couple of kilometres off road which is bumpy and slow (especially when you're trying not to wreck your hire car), it's eco friendly place which again, is great but it's worth knowing this means the electricity runs out half way through the night. We didn't expect air con but the fans cutting out did make it very difficult to sleep. There are also no blinds so expect to wake up with the sun. The restaurant situation was also a bit strange, on our first night we had a delicious dinner but several items on the menu weren't available and of an extensive drinks list including wine and cocktails only beer was available. On the second day, we arrived at 6pm after being out all day, looking forward to dinner. As we pulled in, the managers saw us, then drove away. We assumed they'd be returning but after texting them an hour later we were told sorry, no restaurant tonight and given the link to the local equivalent of deliveroo. This wouldn't have been so annoying if we'd known in advance but because the place is quite cut off you don't really want to driving back and forth down the gravel track in the dark to find a restaurant (plus you're on holiday, you might want to drink!) So we settled for a cold takeaway. I'm sure it's challenging running a place like this but maybe the restaurant should be described differently to manage expectations, it's not the cheapest place to stay. Having said all this, we still really enjoyed staying at the treehouses and when food was served, it was really tasty.

Dear Guests, Thank you for choosing Ajal Tulum Tree Houses for your vacation. Our objective is to provide guests with a superior experience in every way possible. We are disappointed to hear you encountered a couple downsides. Unfortunately, during your stay we experienced a very unusual malfunction of our battery bank causing a power outage in the night. This is rare and not to be expected. We usually have power with fans running all the time for our guests’ comfort. Please accept our apology for the restaurant/bar issues you experienced. You are quite right. We should have advised you about the restaurant hours, and the limited selection at the bar at that time. Again this is not the norm. As for the bumpy road, we are taking steps to improve the dirt road after the rains. It's a process. But while it's important to know the dirt road is slow going it helps to keep our property remote, private and quiet. In summary, we are delighted you chose Ajal for your vacation. We understand and apologize for the problems you encountered and will do everything possible to make your next stay at Ajal spectacular as we do for all our guests. Thank for your feed back. We welcome your comments as they help us improve.

I came across Ajal Treehouse on Trip Advisor and my wife and I are so glad we did. Upom our arrival we were greeted by Francisco, who with a kind spirit and gear a English made us feel relaxed and comfortable after our day of travel. He gave us a tour of our treehouse and followed up with a couple of signature cocktails to enjoy in the tower while watching the sunset above the canopy of the jungle. We stayed in the Chaka Treehouse and what an incredible experience. All screened in and a mesquite net over the bed we were never bothered by the insects of the jungle. The outdoor shower was a highlight of our stay taking in all the sounds of the jungle while showering was something to experience. The food at Ajal was extremely fresh and locally sourced. We enjoyed two dinners and two breakfast, there was no holding back on quality. Franscico, Allan, and JP all provided a 5 star service during our stay. Thank you to JP for sharing his vision and creating such an amazing experience. We will be back.

When I first traveled to Tulum in 2006, the center was still mostly filled with locals. In 2011 there were way more tourists and some people started to complain that it was no longer the serene "off-the-beaten-path" place it once was.

But l longed for the beaches, friendly locals, amazing nature and great food, so I decided to go back and see for myself.

I longed to be surrounded by the sounds of the jungle, so I was excited to hear about Ajal Tulum. Getting there is a fun adventure! Just a few kilometers south of town, when you turn onto the gravel road, you are suddenly in the thick of the jungle! Once you get closer, the road is lined with tiki torches that guide you to your house. The air is fresh and moist and filled with sounds of jungle creatures that make you feel honored just to be with them.

The houses are comfortably furnished with tasteful amenities. Little extras like the freshwater, humane bug catchers, and flashlights are demonstrative of the attention to detail here.

I had the best vegan pancakes of my life here and the whole team was so sweet and helpful, but Luz was especially caring and thorough. In just a few days, I felt like she became a new friend.

The tower is awesome, and my only regret was not spending more time up there.

You'll probably want to have a car, as taxi fares are not so cheap.

If you are longing for peace and tranquility, but you also want to be relatively close to the action in town, I can't recommend Ajal Tulum enough.

We had the opportunity to stay at Ajal Tulum Tree Houses which is situated in the Mayan tropical forest of Tulum. Your adventure begins as soon as you turn off the main street and head down a dirt road deep into the jungle. After about a mile, you reach an oasis of four tree houses surrounding a central cantina. After arrival, we soon found ourselves having welcome drinks high above the canopy in an ajacent lookout tower. We then visited the 'pool' which is one of the most well known cenote's in Tulum and just a short walk away. Soon we retired to our tree house and fell asleep to the sounds of birds and the hum of the jungle.

The attention to detail is impecable throughout Ajal. From the carefully selected artwork by local artists, to the world class cuisine, this eco resort delivers a five star experience while honoring bio-diversity and the environment. We soon realized why people who aren't even staying there come to visit. The food is amazing and many of the items are grown in the on-site garden using rain water. The tropical drinks have been carefully selected, paying homage to the Yucatan and Mexico. You don't get to experience anything like it in Tulum. The service was as good, if not better then any resort we have ever been to. We were treated like family by everyone we met.

Being off the grid, it caters to those who want to take a step back from the hustle and bustle of the Tulum beach scene and retreat into the jungle. Be prepared for a romantic and magical time where you turn off your phone and just be one with nature. Cool jungle breezes replace AC, but there is enough power and high speed wifi if you absolutely must connect to the outside world. However, I'd suggest unplugging and pro-tip: have a sunrise breakfast at the top of the lookout tower!

We came to Ajal coming back from Ka’an laguna. We found the place randomly driving and I have to say, it was the best place we’ve been to so far. It's quite a hike to get there (1.4km from the road) but definitely worth it. We were surprised to find a restaurant in the middle of a jungle surrounded by tree houses. The restaurant was more than affordable (900 pesos for 3 hearty eaters) and very cozy. Ajal has everything of a luxury place, but the prices! The food was absolutely delicious and the staff was very kind and helpful giving us great advices on things to do in Tulum. The owner Mr.Pink was very welcoming, and showed us around to show us this beautiful Ajal project he’s been working on (and this alone!).

Bottom line, if you’re looking for a fun, unique, and cheap experience for lunch (only open at lunchtime for now) i highly recommend this place, and can guarantee you that will not regret it!

See you all very soon!

The drive to the venue is a few miles down a dirt road. We were helped with our cases, ate wonderful ready prepared food and received the personal touch continually while there from all who worked there.

We spent 3 glorious nights in a tree house, although do think luxury rather than something thrown together.

The tree house, we stayed in, Chechen, had all we needed. It felt good to be on solar energy. There's a toilet in the tree house and a shower underneath with hot water.

The most surprising element was the bar and restaurant area. We could get food and drinks, but be sure to let them know if you would like an evening meal.

There are mosquito meshes on every window and door. And the peace of the jungle rejuvenated us both. We would definitely return. Thanks to all at Ajal.

This place is incredible!

Currently there are only 4 treehouses, which means it is really quiet and you get a completely personalised service from Luz and the team.

From the moment we arrived we were warmly welcomed to the amazing setting.

We felt very at home there, the Treehouse was decorated beautifully and everything is designed to feel special and remote.

The shower is outside, beneath the treehouse, but still isolated and private. So showering is a very unique experience in the jungle!

There is a cenote in the grounds, which is quiet and in place of a pool. It only takes 5 minutes to walk there.

It's a very peaceful retreat from other hotels and the beaches, ruins and large cenotes. With a car it's only a 10 minite drive to the main road in Tulum and Luz can organise a taxi for you to venture out for dinner etc.

Overall, just an incredible place, we thoroughly recommend it without any hesitation.

This place is amazing!!! It is located 1.5 kilometers down a gravel road in the jungle just south of Tulum. It is private. There are 4 tree houses but we only saw one other couple there. The treehouses surround the jungle cantina where they serve fresh, delicious food and drinks. Don Carlos, the general manager was so nice. He helped us reserve electric motos and gave us tips on things to do. Everyone there is so nice and friendly. Don Carlos made our cocktails in the evening with fresh squeezed lemons and limes. The treehouse was so awesome. It was an amazing experience. It's not air-conditioned and there are bugs but that is all part of the fun. We want to come here every year now. Thank you Don Carlos!!

I couldn't have chosen a better location as a base for my birding tour of the Yucatan peninsula. The staff were very accommodating of my odd hours and requests and found novel solutions for meeting my needs. Rooms were squeaky clean, an amazing feat considering the jungle location, and concerns were addressed immediately. I would love to visit again.

I found Ajal via Instagram and thought it would be a unique place to stay for the last two nights of my honeymoon in Tulum. I was absolutely blown away by my experience here and the people that made it possible. Ajal is an isolated jungle retreat off the Tulum highway about 15 minutes from the town. The only sounds you'll hear when you're staying at Ajal are the birds, insects, and occasionally some tunes from the jungle cantina, located at the center of the resort. It's blissful and relaxing. When my wife and I arrived, we were suffering from a rash we got from the local Chechem tree. I messed the GM, Don Carlos, and was met at the property with the natural remedy, a mixture of tree bark from the Chaka tree, which helped relieve our pain. Every part of our stay was special, from the Mezcalitas made by Christian the bartender, to the breakfasts and dinners prepared by Gabriel their chef, and of course our conversations had with the owner and founder, John Pink. I cannot recommend this place enough if you have an interest in off-grid living and an experience that truly is in sync with nature and sustainable living. 10/10
