Hotel's Favourite
After reading many reviews On TA I booked this hotel in October 2022, arrived with my son for 10 days from 5th July until 15th July

First impressions on arrival how spacious and open the reception area was, this carried through to the entertainment area and to the rear where pools and rooms are situated, but the "HEAT/HUMIDITY" wow, hotel has no air conditioning in any areas of reception just huge ceiling fans, both heat and humidity were over powering stupid me for booking to stay in July durrr. Nice touch was the welcome drink from the team on arrival

I had emailed the hotel many weeks before arrival to ask for a room on the 1st floor if possible, re possible noise from rooms above sadly no response, also Tui had placed this request on my booking, I was dismayed to find during check in requests had not been actioned, until Paulao (sorry if spelt incorrectly), managed to find a room on first floor, great customer service from her

Found the room eventually ( on signs named as villas which threw me), was amazed how spacious they are (pictures onTA do not show this), two large beds, side cabinets (us brits love these for our undies), large set of drawers, ample space in wardrobe, safe (free), fridge and optics, bathroom quite large two sinks, storage underneath fab, seperate loo, large ceilng fan and AC, (which was much neeed and worked great), smallish balcony, only thing I would say is ALL the furniture is dated looks it, maybe an update is needed

Wandered round on first day to find shop, restaurants etc so here is my review

Food/Drink - we ate in the main restaurant for breakfast and evening meals, fantastic air conditioning, the choices are amazing, cater for many nationalities, I usually only eat one meal a day at home, but was having two breakfasts, dinners and evening meals, not because I am a typical Brit (I've paid for it so I am having it kinda gal), simply because of the variatey whilst I am away, I always eat more plus I like to try other food types not just Brit food, the waiting staff are so busy at every sitting, a credit to this hotel. we also ate at the open air restaurant at lunch (behind the swim up pool), this is cooked fresh on an outside barbecue area, whilst limited choices which was fine, was very filling and tasty, only complaint is where you sit is open plan so birds fly in and out basically eyeing your food up, maybe some form of netting could be placed either side, which may prevent them getting in. We also ate at the italian, food was cooked fresh, fantastic meal, did not get chance to eat at the steakhouse as always a queue, did not try the chinese restaurant either. There is a restaurant on the beach, lunchtime food is fab, but we used this more for the drinks due to heat, this restaurant doubles up on an evening as a mexican restaurant, we did not try. We used the swim up pool for drinks, lived on a shot called a Scooby Doo, lush/strong, on an evening we also used the 24hr sports bar, air conditoned, the staff in there again a credit to the hotel, they make any cocktails that are not on the list, this can be noisey at times

Pool Areas - These have plenty of sun beds and shade, sadly the usual bed hoggers with towels were in action, this is NOT needed as there are plenty around ALL pools all day, this is the only holiday where the swimming pools feel like you are swimming in a hot bath, not very refreshing at all, I used the showers on the side to cool down, not sure management can do anything about this, we mainly sat around the swim up bar when not at the beach. There are smoking areas around the hotel, outside reception, areas as you walk to your rooms/pools

Beach - You can wait outside the hotel for a lovely guy who drives a golf cart (extra seating), which drives you to the beach through a shaded passageway, we opted to walk re having eaten large breakfast, the beach area is amazing, colours of the sea, sand lovely and soft, plenty of sund beds, in the times we used the beach there were always ample empty beds. There are two other RIU's either side of the Tequila's area, Yucatan and Playa, you can go into both hotels and their beach areas, usual beach activities, jet skis, para gliding, etc only negatives are the sellars trying to sell hats, jewellary etc, became annoying after some time but eventually they took the hint, not as much seaweed as I expected, was found on entry to the sea, (which was warm to enter), there are guys on tractors who do the their best to keep clear, kept having to pinch myself re I was sat in the Carribean just breath taking

Entertainment - This was hit and miss for me, there is a useful electric notice board in reception that you can click on that tells you what is planned for each day, from 10.00am upto 11.00pm. Best nights for me were the Neon and White night also the silent disco, the animation team are in reception before the shows begin, guest can have faces painted, there is also a back drop for picture opportunities, we had brought our own glow sticks etc for the neon night, was fantastic, as was the white night. The silent disco was strange and entertaining, you choose via a switch on the head sets which dj sets you want to listen to, it is funny when no music is heard in the large open aired entertainment area, when head sets are taken off , plus you can hear the many out of tune wannabee Beyonce singers including me and my son. There is also a nightclub 'Pasha', stays open until 2, we did not use this as after being in the sun, eating, drinking and the night time heat we were too tired. On the Neon/White night, you will find quests are bussed in from other Riu hotels, this made the hotel very busy/noisey, extra drinking stations were set up,
also which I found was needed, if you were going for food before the shows on these nights your armband was checked to ensure you were Tequila guests

Also around the grounds are various animals, signs clearly say DO NOT FEED, as usual idiots given them bread, sweets, etc, these are wild animals, we went on a trip one am, we were up at 5, whilst walking to reception we saw a few monkeys and their young was great to see

Positives - The Staff, these are the heart and soul of this hotel, from the gardeners, cleaning team, food/bar staff, animation team, always pleasant, do a fantastic job, especially working in such heat, even the staff were struggling who were outside not in the luxury of AC. Rooms cleaned to a high standard, never had to ask for drinks etc to be topped up. The chef's/waiting staff, work tirelessly throughout the day to feed and look after guests. The hotel is very spacious, whilst we were there (through a quiz) we found around 1,500 were staying, did not feel cramped at all.

Negatives - Pool areas, the umbrella's do not give much shade, perhaps could do with being stronger material and darker colour, the beds that are under the cabana's, some of the cabana's covers are broken, the cords do not pull them across, also many are ripped, this is a 5* hotel, this should be looked into

There are NO umbrella's on the beach, there are palm trees which do not give much shade, you also have to move your bed as the sun moves, we were always lucky to be in shade under a large tree which is near the restaurant, so you could have a bed in the shade and in the sun

Pool Swim up bar - The music here was usually in spanish and sometimes too loud, they seem to forget the majority of guests are Europeans/Americans, maybe change this throughout the day

Entertainment - Again mainly aimed at Spanish speakers, the compere when he did speak in English was way too fast, some of the shows are not entertaining. The team do a great job, however whilst I appreciate these shows are repeated every two weeks, you could tell they were going through the motions especially in some of the dance routines, which spoilt the show

As mentioned previously furniture in the rooms could do with being upgraded, plus there is a large tv on the wall, could only find two channels with English speaking films, maybe widen choice, great to lay on your bed with an English cuppa tea (brought my own kettle), eating chocolate and crisps after a long day in the sun, then have your much needed siesta

To finish, we did enjoy our time here, AMAZING staff, where the hotel is situated, total value for money, felt strange not having to pay for food/drinks etc, we did however tip the staff who had provided great service, our cleaner Luisa, the two members of the team in the sports bar who always had a smile ( I am terrible at names), if the mangement could just take the time to action issues I and others have raised previoulsy and many times onTA this hotel would be elevated, hopefully if the management team respond to my review it will not be the bog standard response, actions speak louder than words, we are looking to return, in "cooler" weather, hopefully October/September 2024, where we may see improvements in areas detailed

MUCHAS GRACIAS

ALL Tequila staff - You are ALL STARS

Enjoyed our stay here, we had a nice friendly welcome on arrival, with a complimentary drink, and check in was quick and easy. We had requested a low floor room, near to pool and facilities and we got exactly that. Rooms are spacious, well furnished with two comfortable double beds, plenty of storage, large dressing/bathroom area with double sinks and a large walk in shower and separate toilet. We also had a stocked mini bar, replenished daily and four optic spirits in the bar area, sadly no tea/coffee facilities. The room, as was all the hotel was immaculate and very well maintained. Staff in all areas are a real credit to this hotel, restaurant and bar staff are so friendly and welcoming, nothing is too much trouble, special thanks to Ezequiel for looking after us so well in the buffet restaurant. There are five pools, again well maintained, always being cleaned, beds and tables washed and surrounding floor areas cleaned. Jose kept our favourite spot leaf free and spotless, sometimes a never ending task. We just wished there was a quiet pool where you could get away from the entertainments, foam parties etc. which are not to everyone’s taste although the entertainment team work very hard. They also put on several ‘Party Nights’, a White Party and Neon Party, bit too loud for us and as the area is open air adjacent to the main reception there is no where to escape. Other entertainment consisted of various shows, Abba Tribute etc., all very professional. Food we found generally very good, main buffet changes it’s themes each night and there are also a further four a la carte style restaurants, Japanese/Asian, Steak, Mexican and Italian. Wine however was the same served in each one and was a poor quality in our opinion. Grounds of the hotel are park like and very attractive with hotel rooms mainly in two storey blocks of approximately 16 rooms. Wi-fi was good so was aircon and there are safes and iron and board in the rooms. The lovely white sand beach is approx. 5 mins. walk under a pleasant covered walkway adjacent to the sister hotel, Yucatan. There is also a mini train if you don’t feel like walking and a nice shopping mall, mainly touristy shops, approx. 5 mins. walk., Playa Del Carmen is 30 mins. walk or approx. £5 in a taxi. The area around the hotel feels really safe, in fact it’s in a gated community of luxury hotels and private villas with security guards checking as you enter or leave. Overall we enjoyed our stay and were particularly grateful for the small gift and room decoration for a birthday celebration whilst we were there. Should we return to Playacar we would perhaps look for a quieter hotel, although in fairness to Riu they have other sister hotels which you can use as part of the package if you so wish.

Let's start with why Playacar? Just south of where Playa Del Carmen ends the gated community of Playacar begins. Playacar is a much quieter, calmer experience than neighboring Playa Del Carmen. You won't find near as many shops and restaurants but you will find a small selection of shops in the central part of Playacar along with many vacation properties and several all inclusive resorts.
Now Hotel Riu Tequila, one of 6 Riu resorts in Playa, is a very recently renovated and remodeled property with a very modern design. The Riu Tequila does not sit on the beach but shares an amazing pool and beach area with the Riu Yucatan via a walkway, also serviced by shuttle. It's a 10 min walk to the beach area or you can enjoy the multiple pools in the center of the Riu Tequila complex. One of the things you will enjoy about the Riu Tequila is the configuration for the main building. All of the bars, the night club, the entertainment stage, the coffee shop/sports bar, and restaurants are all located in the main building. You can hang out in the evening and watch a show, or people, while waiting for you table at the steak house.
Having stayed here twice now and after multiple trips to Mexico I can say that the staff here really is exceptional and sets is apart. We have found them friendly and eager to take care of your needs.
Would highly recommend and will visit again.

We were highly recommended this resort when we were looking at honeymoon destinations with TUI and were also recommended this by some friends & family who have stayed at the resort previously so before even arriving we were off to a good start with our expectation levels.

Our whole experience starting off by booking with TUI (I know this is a review about the Hotel but these guys have been remarkable so if you are booking through them you won’t be disappointed) to our whole two week honeymoon at the resort has been incredible with not one ounce of doubt about our choice coming from us.

The resort is immaculately clean and extremely well run. Upon arriving after our lengthy flight we were greeted with a cocktail whilst checking in and we were placed in block 28 at the far end of the resort. Whilst our view wasn’t the best (just some trees blocking off the golf course behind) the room was plenty big enough, modern and clean enough for what we need. The cleaners come everyday and the drinks in the minibar topped up every two days which was fantastic, not that it was needed much as the pool bar and the other two bars within the resort were always accommodating.

In my opinion though (with many organisations) it was the staff within the Tequila who made our stay incredible. Everyone you pass always said ‘Hola’ and they always had a smile on their face. The staff within the restaurants (our favourite was the Italian) were always polite and quick to ensure your drinks were always topped up and empty plates taken. The range of food on offer across all the restaurants were plentiful and over the two weeks of our stay we never found ourselves bored of what was on offer. We always found ourselves being served by Rangel (in the main buffet restaurant) who daily ensured we had a table and our preferred drinks waiting for us when he saw us coming in, whilst the other waiters / waitresses were great, Rangel made our meal times that little bit more personal. The evening shows were always great and catered for all age ranges and the daytime activities were always well organised and again offered a great range for all ages.

Our one and only gripe / recommendation to the hotel / travelling guests is to have tea & coffee making facilities within the room, so ensure you pack a travel kettle! We found, especially in the early morning when our Jet Lag was in full force, having to walk from one end of the resort where our room was to the other side of the resort by the entrance to visit the 24/7 Bar for some caffeine wasn’t welcome and although I am sure if we called the reception they would bring us a drink down as they are that accommodating but we never tried this as we aren’t that lazy!!

There is plenty of other things we could mention and talk about but why spoil the fun when you could visit to see them for yourselves.

Overall our honeymoon at this hotel was spectacular and we would have no hesitation to return or recommend to anyone that they have stay there.

Thank you for making our honeymoon everything we wanted and everything we needed.

The Blick’s.

Really lovely hotel, set out beautifully, very well maintained by all the staff. We went at a bit of bad time of the year so there was quite a bit of rain which were our 'boring days' didn't find there was much to do if it was raining. Food not brilliant it's average at best we preferred eating in the buffet restaurant to the others as they had more choice but then again it wasn't amazing food and we found ourselves hungry after. We actually went to 5th avenue quite a lot as we found the entertainment quite boring in the hotel apart from the themed Friday night we loved the neon night but found ourselves going to bed at half 9 every night because we were bored. If we were to come back we would probably just not go all inclusive as its not really worth the extra money and we prefer to go out of the complex. Cleaners kept our room really tidy although our room didn't get cleaned till about 4pm every day which was annoying because you'd come back from a full day at the pool and just want a nap before the evening but the staff still hadn't been in.

My son and I just returned from two weeks at the Rio Tequila. I was a bit concerned that I booked a party hotel and it might not be an ideal place for families. However I think the hotel offered a great mix of fun and relaxation.

The food was really good, I’m missing all the wonderful fresh fruit and seafood already. The rooms were also spotless and modern, the house keepers surprised us with fun towel sculptures which we enjoyed returning to.

The most special part of the hotel was definitely the staff, we travel all over the world and I think the staff at the Rio Tequila have been some of the friendliness people I have met and made our time there really special. Polo from the entertainment team kept my son entertained all day and would come looking for him when the games we’re bout to start. He is full of energy, always smiling and made us feel really cared for during our stay. Arinanna was also lovely and full of fun as was Julio.

The beach was absolutely stunning and we had a wonderful time learning to sail the catamaran with Alex who was so patient and kind and swam out ti rescue us when we got stuck 🙈

The only downside is it’s a bit far from the main area of town and the cabs at the hotel seem to charge whatever they fancy. However it’s a great location to go on plenty of excursions, swimming with turtles was definitely a highlight.

We didn’t watch much of the evening entertainment, it seemed a bit lacking for kids, but the Michael Jackson show was amazing!

My only complaint about the hotel is the walls are like paper and the other guests are not the quiet type. I would say it’s a 5 star hotel, more of a good 4 star but for the price I didn’t expect it to be as good as experience as it was.

Loved this Hotel. Lotes of good entertainement, drinks of good quality and friendly staff.
Rooms were of comfortable size, ice machine dotted about (when they were working) to fill your ice bucket up in the room, optics in the room.
Good all round food and the use of the sistering Riu hotels apart from the Palace.

Currently at the Riu Tequila with only a day left to go :( The positives…Very clean resort. Staff very friendly. Lots of pools. They try really hard to have fun activities throughout the day for both adults and kids. One thing I will say that has impressed me is the masking. Every staff and worker wears masks. They check temperatures at the buffet and have sanitizer at the entrance. Gotta say that I actually feel safer here than back home.
The not so positives…Food was okay, but honestly nothing to write home about. Buffet had same choices every day. For lunch, we tended to eat by the poolside bbq. We only ate at the Italian and steakhouse à la cartes…Was pretty disappointed with the steakhouse. The Italian was the better of the two. The rooms seem updated, but could honestly use a door to separate the washroom area from the room. There is only a door separating the toilet from the rest of the room. The shower only has a glass door. As this resort is not beachside, it may not appeal to those who are ‘beach bums’. Then again, it’s pretty accessible by trail (approx 7 minute walk) they also have a cart service which runs frequently. If you want to get a chair by any of the pools, be prepared to drop your towels down before you go to breakfast, but even that may be too late. I get that this happens at most resorts, but I found it to be particularly bad here. Lastly, the sports bar. It is open 24/7 and has pool tables and a foosball table. But, you need to pay to play. The pool tables take 8x5 peso coins and the foosball table take 2x5 peso coins. You can only get the coins from reception, and they don’t always have enough. This is an all-inclusive and IMHO, these should be free.
Again, we have enjoyed our stay…It may seem like a long list of not so positives, but for us overall we’ve had a good time.

We used to head to PDC every December but hadn't visited in a few years. We've stayed at the Riu Tequila several times and liked it so we headed back. The hotel is across the street from the beach so there are no sea view rooms and the beach is a 5 minute walk (or minute golf cart ride). You can use the facilities and eat lunch across the street at the Yucatan or Playacar hotels which are both on the beach.

We ate most of our meals at the buffet at either the Tequila or the one right across the street (Yucatan?) and the food was good with a lot of variety. The restaurants no longer require a reservation but the steakhouse was the one disappointing meal we had. The meat was tough and the service disorganized.

Our room was nice, clean and comfortable. The fridge is stocked with soda, bottled water and there are bottles of liquor as well. The room was cleaned every day with new towels if you wanted them or you could reuse. There is a safe in the room. We had a balcony but it didn't overlook anything.

Now for the glitches, it took a couple of tries to get them to honor the free Covid test which stopped being free for reservations booked the day after I did. Once we got the voucher, booking the test was easy and quick. We had our results within a few hours via email. That said, the voucher should have been automatically given to us at check in.

The included shuttle involved at 30-45 minute wait coming to the resort, I expected that based on past trips. Getting back, we were on the bus for an hour when they circled back to our hotel to pick us up even though we were already on the bus, They had us down twice.

Out of the hotel's control was the waves which prevented us from using the catamaran and the seaweed that repopulated the beach faster than they could remove it.

The flight to cancun with tui was completely fine, as soon as we got to cancun airport it was ridiculous. 4 flights landed near enough the same time, the airport was very overcrowded so social distancing was impossible, there was no organisation whatsoever. From the time we landed to getting on the transfer bus was just over 2 hours. We got to the hotel and we were offered a cocktail on arrival. Check in was easy and our cases were brought to our room. The room was nice and spacious, included a safe, iron and hair dryer. We also received the optics in our room after the first week. The fridge included soft drinks, bottled water and cans of lager which were topped up every 2 days all complimentary. The pools were faultless, there was a pool bar that played music most of the day and could swim up and order drinks, there was also 4 other pools included a kids pool. The food was a bit hit and miss, breakfast stayed the same every morning, offering, cakes & pastries, cooked meats, salads, cereal, typical breakfast foods. Dinner was available from 12:30-3pm in the main restaurant or you could grab something from the snack bar near the pool bar. It consisted mainly of burgers, hotdogs, chips. For tea, there was a few options to choose from, there was the main restaurant, an Asian, Italian, steak and Mexican restaurant you could also visit. We only visited the steak restaurant and it was great, really enjoyed it. We did have a few questions regarding excursions and pick up times so we went to speak to our tui rep (Jennifer). Unfortunately, non of our questions were answered, and if they were she gave us the wrong information which caused a lot of stress! If you need any booking confirmations for excursions or anything you can go to reception and send them the email and they can print it off for you, which was a great touch. The cleanliness of the hotel was also faultless, we really enjoyed our 2 weeks stay at tequila, the beach was only a 5-10 minute walk away, or you could get the little buggie that runs from the hotel down to the beach that only takes a couple of minutes. I would 100% recommend this hotel, just not to book via tui.

The hotel has a designated smoking area, and there is an area out front along the sidewalk/street where smoking is allowed. There were folks smoking on their balconies and were not told not too.

"Avoid June/July unless you enjoy rain. Avoid block 25, too far away from everything and too close to the "jungle". Outside of this you will love the Tequila and the staff "

"Bring cooler cups, mosquito repellent, an oily based sun cream as others melt in the heat. Blocks 16-19 are close to the bigger pool and swim up pool. Tip kindly. "
