A welcomed view after the long dirt road to arrive at the property, The house and the accommodations are absolutely stunning! It's a great escape from the everyday hustle & bustle. I also found the breakfast a bit of a let down with a standard continental breakfast that did not include fresh fruit. Would have also loved to have the host(s) at breakfast to meet them and talk more about the area.

Arriving for my last night in Canada I was pleasantly surprised to discover how pretty and welcoming this accommodation was. Previously a private home, this residence has been recreated to five beautiful suites. The kitchen is fully equipped and breakfast is provided. Common areas are spacious and comfortable. Large gardens and access to water activities a bonus. Only downside is that it is a little distant to Deer Lake proper so you will need to either byo dinner/ alcohol/ provisions with you or have a car. About 10min to Deer Lake airport ($20 fare)
Owners - Chad & Kimberley Halfyard are very hospitable
Stay more than one night!

We arrived late in the evening at this B&B and probably would never have found it if Chad had not texted us detailed instructions on how to get there. The house is beautiful, but my husband and I were put off with having to check ourselves in. We felt like we were breaking into someone's house, which made us very uncomfortable. Also the sign about not wearing shoes in the house was fine, but some type of disposable slippers should be provided. Our room was large and well furnished. The shower worked great and the bed was very comfortable. The internet worked well. Two things that stood out to us though were that there wasn't a waste basket to be found anywhere, just a shallow basket on the floor of the bathroom which we found annoying, and also there were no tissues provided in the bathroom which surprised both of us since I've never stayed anywhere that didn't have a box in the bathroom or bedroom. Breakfast was advertised as being from 7 to 10, which we thought would work well since we had an early plane to catch, but no one ever showed up with any food. Upon calling after 8:00 AM, Chad said he was on his way over, but by then, it was too late for us to eat. I must say that he refunded part of the cost of the room to us because of this after my husband complained. All in all, this B&B has lots of kinks to work out. A beautiful house, setting, and furnishings do not make up for lack of amenities and no in-house presence. In speaking with Chad, he was very enthusiastic about the self-checkin, self-service of his B&B but this kind of B&B was not for us as we like interacting with the owners and having an onsite presence.

My partner and I stayed in Tranquil Waters Inn for one overnight stay, en route from L'Anse aux Meadows to St. John's. The Inn is located quite a bit outside Deer Lake and would be difficult to find without the specific directions texted to us by Chad, the owner. This is a completely self-service B&B. From the time of your arrival to when you leave you will not meet the owners or any staff members. I think this should be specified on the website, as this is not my preferred style of B&B and I wouldn't have booked if I had known this in advance.

We arrived at 7:30pm, tired after a long journey, to instructions in a note on the door about self check-in, which was fairly straight forward. The house is very attractive and elegantly furnished, as was our bedroom. There is however, an impersonal, minimalist feel to the rooms e.g. there was no bottled water or coffee making facilities in the bedrooms and absolutely no information in the rooms about the self-service concept behind this Inn (which we were not aware of) or about recommended local restaurants or amenities. A Google search showed about six fast food restaurants locally, one of which we went to and had probably the worst meal we had in Newfoundland. I feedback this to the owner the following day and he said he had all the local information is available to guests, in a folder in the living room. After a long journey, late in the evening, it would be much more helpful if this information was available in the room without the guests having to search for it.

Breakfast the following morning was laid out in the kitchen and was completely self-service, fairly straight forward, you might think, except we were 4 couples who had all arrived the night before and all arrived in the kitchen for breakfast at the same time. Nobody knew where anything was kept and the experience was frustrating and somewhat chaotic, for example, microwaveable oatmeal was provided but we somehow could not find the microwave. There was a coffee maker and only one pod of coffee per person. Apparently there is extra coffee available but we couldn't find it. The whole experience would have been much less chaotic if there was some staff presence in the house to asks for assistance with some of these basic issues.

I did text Chad the owner, before writing this review and he explained to me that this is a concept B&B, where there is a focus on the privacy of the guests. I can absolutely appreciate how privacy might be an important concept for some people, especially if you were going to stay for 4 or 5 nights, or more and you get to know the way the B&B is set up. For one overnight stay, on a long journey, the self-service concept of this B&B felt like hard work for the guest. I'm sure there are possibly ways of ironing out some of these difficulties. I personally, don't like the concept of a self-service B&B and would particularly like this to be mentioned on a website so that I could make a choice at the time of booking.

We were looking forward to staying at Tranquil Waters the night before an early flight out west. Two nights before our flight, a possible hurricane was coming in, and we could not afford to be delayed as we had family back home in the hospital. We decided to leave Newfoundland a day early so we could avoid the storm and possible delays. Interestingly, the other hotel and air canada both made our changes without extra charge. Tranquil waters advised us that if they rented our room we would not be charged. We saw that they rented the room(and we have proof) but they charged us anyway. We felt this was poor customer service and not done in good faith. I will add that our credit company covered for the hotel- as even THEY understood our dilemma with the incoming storm! (Btw our CC company is RBC MasterCard- westjet).
Anyway, I want future travellers to be aware of the way they will be treated by this hotel should anything go wrong.

We did the St. John's to L'Anse aux Meadows with an overnight stay near Deer Lake at Tranquil Waters. Wow! This place is so much more satisfying than even very good hotels, which you will not find in the hinterland of Newfoundland.

The building and common areas are lovely and beautifully done. You have a whole home to enjoy as you wish. The bedrooms, of course, are private, large and luxurious. The bath is very nicely done. The view across the lawn to the quiet Humber River is pleasant.

We came back two days later. It was better, simply because a suggestion or two we made had already been acted on as the owners strive for perfection. They will get there!

We booked as wanted a place close to Gros Morne, had not done much research so the place was a great surprise. Huge common area, view of the river, kitchen great. Coffee and a large selection of David’s tea to choose from. The suites are large and separated by large common areas. Continental breakfast provided. Could not ask for more.

The owner had two properties which I was not aware of. From ALL the pictures online I understood I was booking at the Tranquil Waters Inn located on the water. I didn’t get directions until I arrived at the Inn on the water and was only then told by the cleaning staff that I was at the wrong location and my booking was for a house downtown. We then had difficulty finding the house which was located in an industrial area of town. Thankfully it was only a booking for one night! While we were there we had to redirect two other families that were having the same issue. One family was staying with us and was not aware it was a house sharing setting and the other couple was booked at the inn and didn’t know. Better communication and transparency is needed!

To whom it may concern, We have three properties that we rent as a nightly accommodation all with different civic addresses. Our first and foremost is to do our upmost for each and every guest we are fortunate to have choose our properties for there visit in Deer Lake, western NL. Our three properties are all rated as a 4 to 4.5 star by the Canada Select hotel standards. There are times where the online reservation system can be very misinforming when you have more then one accommodation as we try our best to clarify exactly what a person reserved online has booked providing we can reach out to our guest. Sometimes reaching out to our guest is difficult as we don’t have a telephone number as the guest reserves leaving a contact number that they don’t travel with. It can be frustrating as a business due to the lack of communication and transparency between both parties. We definately find reserving with us directly is much more informative as we can explain everything in full detail, unlike occaisional online guest reservations assuming things are just so when in actual fact they are not. When a person has showed up to one of our three nightly accommodations to find out from our cleaning staff they are at the wrong location they have to be more conscious of the detailed directions and information that we send to every guest before check in through there online reservation site. We also recommend anyone reserving through the online booking system should always follow up with there accommodation and try to seek answers to any question they may have about there booking before the date of check in. We are very thankful for every guest we have stay with us and just really want to offer everyone our upmost to make there stay as enjoyable and comfortable as it should be. I thank you for your review as every guest has the right to express there thoughts as it is a major factor in the accommodation industry. We treat our negative reviews as constructive criticism which helps our Team grow in a rather positive direction for each and all guest we are so happy to meet along there travels in beautiful Western Newfoundland and Labrador. Sincerely, Chad Tranquil Waters Inn Team

When we starting planning our trip to Newfoundland last year we purposely looked for a quiet place to stay for two nights about midway through our trip. Tranquil Waters Inn filled that niche perfectly. We had no trouble finding it (unlike other reviewers) as it was on our vehicle GPS and on Google Maps on our phones. We had no trouble with the check-in either; Chad gave us great instructions over the phone and by text. We felt at home immediately and appreciated the quiet elegance of the inn. Thank you to everyone at Tranquil Waters Inn, it was wonderful spending time at your establishment.

First let me say- We were not out at the river location. Our accomadation was in Deer lake. They have several properties. A very nice room and the best bed we had over our two week holiday.
One older guest had a problem and Chad took the extra time to help him out. We were really impressed with the level of customer service there.

Lovely breakfast in the morning,

The town and restaurant are 5-8 minutes away.
