Carlisle Bay Antigua is often celebrated for its idyllic beachfront setting and the friendliness of its staff, with guests frequently commending the attentive service despite occasional inconsistencies. While the hotel boasts commendable cleanliness and a selection of water sports and children's activities, reviewers suggest that both the amenities and rooms could benefit from an upgrade. Although the tranquil atmosphere is enhanced by live music, some guests feel the vibrancy is lacking and the value doesn't quite align with the 5-star pricing.

We stayed here for a couple of weeks in a large 2nd floor room overlooking the beach, a fantastic location with plenty of activities and 4 restaurants. The food and staff were excellent but some of the service was a little shambolic. The furniture in the Italian restaurant belongs in a conservatory and is totally unsuitable for dining. Housekeeping was very variable as was some of the front desk service. The tennis courts are dilapidated. The place is in desperate need of investment, leadership and attention to detail. There does not appear to be anyone in overall charge or if there is they are totally invisible and do not seem to care. This is not currently a 4 star venue but it could soon return to a 5 star status with some investment and leadership. A well stocked shop that is the norm in 5 star resorts would help. Sound insulation between our room which had an adjoining door to the adjacent room was very poor. DMC13’s review says it all. We would love to return if we could be assured there was an improvement program in place and someone in overall charge who appeared to care and took some pride in the place.

We stayed in Carlisle Bay for 9 nights in August 2021 and had a wonderful time. Bad reviews in the last month will most likely be related to two things, Covid and a random sick bug brought into the resort (which we saw no sign of during our stay), both of which are out of the control of the hotel. Covid and UK travel rules had led to occupancy rates in Antigua being incredibly high for the time of year (usually a low season and resorts only just opening up after being shuttered for so long) hence most complaints on here about service as staff get up to speed. Any maintenance issues and the sun bed situation are also linked to that - they have had 140 new sun beds on order since April, so they will arrive soon if not already! I was concerned about the reviews on here before we travelled and Brian, the GM, went out of his way to call me in the UK to put my mind at ease. If you were to look at reviews from earlier this year you will gain a much fairer and balanced view of what Carlisle Bay is like. The bay is beautiful, utterly paradise, with soft sand, calm water and a gentle sloping beach that is totally safe for kids. Some have mentioned cloudy water due to a natural lake outlet at one end of the beach. At high tide the water is pretty clear and you can often find the turtles to swim with. Even better is kayaking out to a secluded beach to the left of the beach where the visibility is great and perfect for snorkelling. Food is great, loads of choice to keep adults and kids happy and we found the service in the main restaurant Indigo was quick at all times of the day, you could tell the team were making a massive effort to be super attentive. Thanks especially to Letitia, Akeem, Michael, Len, Simone, Seymour and Audicia (there were lots of other staff that were great as well but those I remembered especially).
If you are a UK traveller (most were during out stay) then your body clock will mean you are awake and up at 6am or earlier, hence the sun beds being used so early. Most days we sat on a lounger to watch the sun come up. We had no issues with sun beds at all on any of the days of our stay.
Our room was huge, spotless and perfect, sitting on the beach (beach terrace suite) and the air con worked perfectly. Housekeeping left the room immaculate every day and restocked the minibar.
One tip I picked up here before going was a trek to the left of the beach to Winter Hill. It’s a great walk, which is marked by ribbons, but a bit hairy in places, so perhaps not for young kids. The view of the coastline at the end, from a cactus field is incredible.
We loved the hotel, I expect we’ll return in the knowledge it will be even better than it was when we visited. If you’re undecided about going and worrying about the reviews on here, I can honestly say we had a fantastic and very relaxing time with wonderful food, drinks and service, in a gorgeous location and I’d have no hesitation to go back again.

This was my first trip to Antigua and also the Caribbean as we normally head ‘east’ but having a free flight c/o my British Airways credit card my wife and I headed there.
My wife and I were delighted with our 7 night stay at the Carlisle Bay Hotel. The room overlooking the beach was excellent with complimentary soft drinks/snacks in the mini bar and the room together with the 6’ bed made for a comfortable stay. The food at all four restaurants was very good with a choice of Caribbean, Italian, oriental and our favourite Indigo having a varied menu (although the buffet on the Thursday nights is not our thing.) The staff at all the restaurants were extremely professional. The same professional standards were displayed by the reception/security and cleaning staff. We hired a car for the day organised by the reception and it was well worth a day touring around (we would highly recommended Half Moon Bay off the beaten track.)
In summary we will definitely return to Antigua at some point and will most definitely stay at the Carlisle Bay Hotel.

In my opinion, this hotel should not be part of the Leading Hotels of the World group. Do not be fooled in to expecting it to be of the same standard as other hotels.
To start with a positive, the bay is beautiful. Stunning sea with turtles popping their heads up and a well maintained beach. This however is where the positives end.
The hotel is looking shabby. Paint work and communal areas need a refurbishment. Every day, multiple times, we reported problems concerning basic housekeeping duties which would then take hours or on one occasion concerning a wasps nest, days to be acted upon. Service in the restaurants was terrible particularly at breakfast where the systems were chaotic. Waiting for a drink could take up to an hour by which time you may or may not have received the correct or incorrect food. However, our main issue was not having a fully functioning A/C system from day 1 up to day 4 when is stopped working altogether. We were given continuous assurances from Maintenance and Management that the problem would be sorted. A portable A/C unit was installed in our room on day 7 which was ineffective and like sleeping next to a jet engine. After not having had a decent night’s sleep since arrival and a stressful week, we checked out and went elsewhere. Guests continued to be checked in to the hotel despite Management being aware that 18 suites were without A/C and the hotel was full and therefore guests were unable to move rooms. The whole hotel experience was stressful and not conducive to a relaxing holiday. The systems and practices at the hotel are poorly managed and there is a distinct lack of communication between staff and guests and staff.
Antigua is a stunning island with lovely people and great restaurants. Carlisle Bay will put guests off ever returning unless they have a huge overhaul of their practices.

I have been staying at this hotel after spending a few weeks on the island and sailing around Antigua and Barbuda. The hotel is nice—the rooms are spacious and they face the beach, so it’s lovely to be able to walk right out onto the sand from your room. The pool area is also great.

My main concern is the total disregard that staff have shown for COVID protocols. Wherever you go at this hotel—the restaurants, the pool, the check-in area, the beach or the gym, staff are either not wearing masks or wearing them around their chins or under their noses. Even when multiple staff come to your room for room service or maintenance reasons, they don’t wear masks, and typically take offense if you ask them to put on masks. This morning at the gym, an instructor told a guest to remove her mask while exercising to make their workout session more enjoyable, even though there were other guests in the gym, all wearing masks—and all quite concerned about what the instructor was doing.

Antigua was doing so well in handling the pandemic, and my experience on the island has been great so far, with most people taking great care to socially distance and observe mask protocols. But I see that case numbers have almost quadrupled In the last few weeks, and it’s really sad to see.

Dear 606Traveltine, Thank you for your recent trip advisor review. We are delighted that you were pleased with our accommodations and found it lovely to walk out of your room right onto the sand. However, it was disappointing to read your comments as it relates to our team members following Covid protocols. At Carlisle Bay, we have implemented A New Clean program which focuses on cleanliness that is be visible to our guests throughout their entire stay at Carlisle Bay. Some of our standards include:  Provision of appropriate masks and sanitizing equipment for our team  Comprehensive training of our new health & safety standards  Reinforced cleaning program with frequent disinfection of ‘high touch points’  Provision of masks and sanitizer for guests  Guest and team member temperature checks completed upon arrival. Team members are checked before commencing their shifts and this is recorded.  Sanitizing stations provided in key public areas (front desk, arrival, toilets, food & beverage outlet entrances)  Limited access to suites before, during and after guest stay We have performed the necessary retraining and re-emphasized the importance of the protocols which are in place to protect not only our guests, but our team here at Carlisle Bay. Thank you once again for sharing your feedback.

Initially we were quite anxious about travelling to Antigua due to the pandemic however Covid tests were taken prior to departure and we felt the Hotel had taken precautions to protect us.

Our ocean suite was good, very spacious and well equipped with access to the beach, one day the room had not been serviced, this was soon rectified. The TV wasn't great but we had laptops and could plug into access Apple TV.

We did opt for the all inclusive package, the food was good all round, breakfast a little disappointing, the usual buffet could not be offered due to covid restrictions but we soon worked out the best times to go and service improved hugely as the week went on. The food at the Jetty and East was good and the service too, especially the gorgeous Kris-Ann. The beach staff were excellent too, always on hand when you wanted a drink or food.

We really enjoyed the tennis coaching, Nigel was great and would highly recommend him for adults and kids, lots of experience.

Larry in Conciege was really helpful, we did have an issue with the boat trip, he soon sorted it, although generally we did feel this particular offer was over priced and not brilliant.

We played golf at Cedar Valley, not a Gleneagles but worth a hack around.

Undoubtedly the service wasn't as good a the last time we went but we did take into account the whole Island had shut down for 6 months, maybe a little ambitious opening to full occupancy over half term, hope the Owners and Management recognise this.

UPDATE
As I started writing this we have been told of another lockdown and travel ban from the UK, feeling very blessed we were able to visit this beautiful Island and wish all the staff at Carlisle Bay well as it is unlikely travel will commence again this side of Christmas which is heart breaking for them all.

This was the first time we stayed at Carlisle Bay, and what an amazing experience.
The staff could not do enough for us, the Manager Brian was extremely professional yet very warm and friendly.

I have read the last review regarding COVID, i cannot disagree enough!
Every staff had masks on, there were sanitiser stations everywhere, you wasn’t allowed in the restaurants until you sanitised, so I’m unsure that this traveller was staying at the same hotel as myself.

The East restaurant was of high quality and a pleasant surprise to be eating Asian food in the middle of the Caribbean, and with the views in the "Jetty" restaurant being so beautiful, we were spoilt for choice.
With the help of the children’s club, ( which was free) my children had the best holiday.

My only small criticism was that the pool was not heated.

This was our first time in Antigua, but certainly not our last, and it will not be our one and only stay at Carlisle Bay
Thank you Brian & all your staff

smarme wrote a review Feb 2022
We’ve just returned from an amazing trip to Antigua and Carlisle Bay. It was myself and two kids aged 15 and 17 and we honestly can’t think of anything bad to say about it.
The setting is really beautiful, right on the beach, but the hotel doesn’t overpower its surroundings as it’s nicely designed with the buildings being quite low level (we went on a boat trip around the island and it’s definitely the nicest looking hotel we saw from the sea and complements rather than spoils the scenery).
The gardens are stunning with beautiful birds flitting around and singing away and bright flowers amongst the palm trees.
As other people have mentioned, the staff are fantastic and seem genuinely committed to making your stay as good as it can be. The beach staff wander up and down during the day checking you have everything you need (in a very unobtrusive way).
We found the food to be excellent and varied; breakfast was lovely with a large choice of food and drinks, even a person to cook fresh omelettes whilst you watch! We ate at all four restaurants and loved them all, particularly the Jetty (15 years old and up). The sushi at East was delicious. You can get anything you like from the In Suite menu and eat on your terrace or have drinks in the lovely Pavilion bar by the pool. We loved the beach with the breeze so we didn’t use the pool, but it’s equally gorgeous and seemed very peaceful.
I noticed reviewers commenting on the expense, but surely if you are going somewhere you check the cost of everything before you leave so there are no surprises? Considering the beauty of the surroundings, the amazing staff and the overall quality of the hotel and the restaurants, plus the fact that presumably they have to ship most of the food and drink in, we thought it was good value. Basically you get what you pay for!
There were all sorts of people there; families with young children, people like me with older kids, and older couples and multi-generational family groups. We thought this made it a nice mix of peaceful if you wanted it to be, but with a bit of life as well. It’s a big enough place to suit everyone and having the Jetty Grill being 15 and up ensures that there is a bit of “grown up” space if you want it. Although it was full, the hotel somehow never felt busy even in the restaurants in the evening.
Highly recommended and I would now be reluctant to stay anywhere else in Antigua in case it wasn’t as good!

Smith wrote a review May 2022
The thing is, when you belong to a group of leading hotels, your guests have certain expectations, and unfortunately the Carlisle Bay no longer lives up to these.
The rooms are lovely - spacious, cool, airy....but if you look at them a little more closely the grouting in the bathroom is black, the plugs are rusty, the shower handle faulty. Even the beach beds are mildewed - understandably the weather isn't ideal in as much as it gets damp and humid at times but it's that leading hotel title.
The service is sketchy to say the least. Some of the staff are amazing and they are all polite and friendly. But, consistent never. For example, your welcome drink promised on arrival, didn't happen. Your housekeeping service, happens for the first couple of days and then at 5pm your room isn't made up; turn down service happens every 2 or 3 days and then nothing, and all you needed was a new bottle of water. Or the tea bags aren't replenished, or there are no fresh towels when you need them, or they take the tumblers away and you can't get them replaced, or there's no ice in the ice bucket for several days. All of which I'm capable of fetching myself but this is meant to be a leading hotel!
The food is outrageously expensive, and the restaurants deserted. Similarly the excursions. I know post covid we should be prepared to pay more, and I am but, for example, a meal in East was over $200 for a main course and a couple of beers. I could have bought better food at the local supermarket takeaway for $4
I really think this hotel doesn't have a soul. There are empty bars where nobody drinks, restaurants where nobody eats and a huge lobby that is just a vast space filled with sofas and chairs that you sit in on arrival and departure. A few years ago on a previous visit and under different management there was at least a Manager's Drinks Party where guests could mingle over a rum punch but that's gone too. It now just all feels like they're after your $
Antigua is a lovely island with interesting places to visit and plenty to do if you want it. But I for one won't be returning to the Carlisle Bay

Antigua
My wife and I have had a house in Antigua for 16 years and have watched Carlisle Bay wither progressively year after year. Today was the new low point. We went for lunch which proved to be prepacked, frozen or bottled/canned food with no care or attention given. Caesar salad with 2 pitiful pieces of anchovy, tuna sashimi, served on bottled horseradish sauce and frozen fries which were soggy. For drinks my wife had one glass of champagne at US$35 plus service at 10% and tax at 13% (should be 15% for a non-resident) making a total of US$42.50 for one glass of Laurent Perrier! I had one glass of Sauvignon Blanc for a modest US$13.67. The soggy fries were US$12.43 so quite reasonable really. The bill for the whole lunch with no desert or coffee was just under US$200! Beware when staying there that your extras bill will be a shock when you check out, as the prices on the menus are net of service and tax. Everywhere you look there is work to be done whether this be repairs, renewals, or simply staff uniforms that are clean and fit! Such a shame that such a wonderful location on an island that I love, is letting itself down so badly.
US$1000 a night....... I don’t think so!!!

Drinks are available all through the day. Kids had plenty of milkshakes etc. Local spirits are primarily used in “adult” drinks. I don’t remember snacks being readily available but there was afternoon tea provided each day if you so wished.
