Most popular question about the shops
Can you come out of the resort and go for a walk. Are there any shops near by to browse and buy gifts. How far away from 5th avenue and can you get a taxi.

We normally stay at one of the Secrets resorts when in Mexico. Our favorite was Secrets Capri (liked the pool layout and the nice little day time restaurant on the beach). They have permanently closed so we tried the Akumal Bay Beach and Wellness Resort this time. It was a GREAT UPGRADE.
This resort is quiet and relaxing - very relaxing. The service is top notch. Every employee we encountered on this trip was professional and helpful and really seemed to care about their job and each customer. Having worked in the hospitality industry before retiring and managed over restaurants and hotels, I know that this is something that only comes with a constant effort from top management to make it a priority.
This property is not deluxe, but is clean and very comfortable. You will not find many things that are not to your liking. The beds are comfortable and the hot water is hot and the shower has great water pressure. The pillow selection was excellent and the Aromatherapy for your room is free and a must for that extra measure of relaxation.
The property has a very large beachfront compared to other Mexican properties as the rooms run along the beach instead of back from the beach. Every room is a short distance to the sandy beach and has an Oceanview.
The pools are not as large as a lot of the resorts, but they are nicely laid out and have daybeds for your enjoyment. We had no problem getting daybeds or beach chairs. Towels are available by the pool/beach and you don't have to check them out.
The food is the highlight of this property. I have eaten at many top rated restaurants around the world and the dinner menu at this property offered some of my favorite items on any menu. I will give a quick rundown of some of my favorite items from some of the restaurants (Items in all caps rate with the best restaurants anywhere).
Lima (Peruvian, this was our favorite) - FISH & SHRIMP CEVICHE (the side of habanero pico that comes with this is incredible), Beef Tirado, Seafood Chupe, HOT SHRIMP CEVICHE, Roasted Fan Shell (sea scallops), ADREAN CHOCOLATE (one of the best tasting, visually appealing and creative desserts I have ever had).
Alux (Mexican, a second favorite) - TIRADITO DE HUACHIMANGO, Tacos de Alambre, Octopus Tacos, Azteca Soup,, Mak'ulan Fish, Seafood with Mezcal, FRESH COCONUT (another dessert that hits it out of the park).
K'ooben (Gourmet) - Foie Turron, Creamy Beet Rice, Confit Grouper, THYME-LEMON BAVAROIS (another playfully creative dessert that checks all the boxes).
Buffet Akumal and Snack Bar (open during the day and evening) - Fish Ceviche (served with the same great habanero pico), Gringos al Pastor, Fish Tacos, Fish and Garlic sauce, Wings. Food and drinks were offered with beach service which was great.
In summary, the a-la-carte dinner restaurants are excellent (not at all like most all inclusive resorts - much better then Secrets). The lunch offered a large range of options and were mostly very good. The breakfast was the weakest part of the food choices. They offered a eggs-made-to-order, along with cold cuts, fruit, etc. Nothing that stood out but ample selections. The pastries were good (but not on the par with Secrets which I think stands up to French bake shops).
We only had one complaint and it was minor - my wife likes to drink iced tea and it was difficult to find at restaurants and bars. Sometimes they had none, sometimes it was cinnamon or chamomile and they would make a cup of hot tea and ice it down. They need to have regular tea bags and offer iced tea (I made this suggestions to management).
Another thing that was a plus - every restaurant offered outdoor dining.
GREAT VACATION - Thanks to everyone at Akumal Bay Beach and Wellness that made this possible.

This resort was a perfect spot for snorkeling. I brought my own snorkelling equipment, and spent many hours in the water. There were turtles swimming right along side you. Such beautiful, calm creatures.
The rooms were nice and clean. I chose a bottom floor, and we were right behind the pool. There was no problem with noise.
Food was very good, fresh options always. The Brazilain restaurant was a new experience, and the Italian was great. A vast cocktail menu, never a problem of them running out of anything as I have experienced other places.
We enjoyed the walk into the Pueblo a stop in Tequiaville and visiting the shops and restaurants in Akumal. So many options for excursions. This time I went to Coba and a cenote . Then to the underwater museum off off Cancun, and a visit to Isla Mujures.
It really was my favourite vacation spot ever. The only negative I could offer is track of nightly entertainment, it's really quiet - which suited me fine.

Wow, what an amazing week-long stay my friend and I had at Akumal Bay Beach & Wellness Resort! We did our research, and this place turned out to be a real winner. Honestly, it was even better than we'd hoped for. It's not a mega-resort, but there's just so much fun stuff to do. They've got a small gym that's basic but totally gets the job done. I'm so thankful for the morning yoga and meditation sessions, and the super-friendly teacher who was patient with all levels.

The free snorkeling for an hour a day and the two paddleboarding classes were just awesome. Both Alejandros were fantastic with their salsa lessons and water aerobics – we had a blast! And let me tell you, you've gotta try the massage. I treated myself to a second one because the first was so heavenly. A massive shout-out to Itzel and her magic hands – it was seriously the best massage of my life!

The resort has four buildings, all with lovely ocean views. We stayed in building one, and it was perfect. Buildings three and four are more peaceful with a rockier beach, and it's just a quick 5-min walk between buildings one and four. The rooms are simple but super clean. We had two queen beds that were ridiculously comfy. When we arrived, we had a little mishap with a broken lightbulb, but they took care of it right away. Caroline from Concierge even sent us champagne and yummy treats the next day to apologize. She's an absolute star! There are two pools – the main one's in front of building two, and a smaller one's in front of building one. I adored the small pool's closeness to the ocean at building one. Make sure you grab seats early in the morning, though, 'cause they go fast. Our bartender made the tastiest Caipirinhas, but some cool beach music would've been the icing on the cake while hanging out by the pool.

There are so many food options and varieties! The buffet is open until 10:30 pm every night – perfect for when you don't want to wait for a table at a restaurant. You can even eat by the window, enjoying the ocean view. I loved the steakhouse, even though I'm not a meat eater. They have an amazing salad bar, and they'll make you fish if you'd like. The grilled pineapple is to die for! There's a sushi bar open daily, and a snack shop that's perfect for grabbing lunch to take back to your lounge chair. If you want a change of scenery, a short walk down the beach gets you to other restaurants, bars, and shops.

Every night, there's entertainment in the main lobby until around 11 pm. Jessica from entertainment animation was an absolute delight! Her salsa dancing skills were unbelievable, and her energy was infectious! My only tiny suggestion would be to have more danceable tunes. Overall, I'm beyond grateful for the unforgettable trip we had!

The resort was very clean and the wait and cleaning staff was top notch.
The servers, bartenders and the cleaning staff were always smiling and helpful.
We traveled in Mid July with my 11 year old son. He had the best time snorkeling. The equipment was free for the first hour, and we went out every day. We saw stingrays close to the waters edge, and turtles and fish out a little further. There are several small reefs with colorful fish less than 100 feet from the shore. Make sure you wear your water shoes. I honestly didn't know that there was water this clear in Mexico.
A bit of advice, follow the larger snorkeling tours around. They have someone with an underwater scuba propeller looking for the turtles, so follow them for a guaranteed and free sighting.
This resort has one large main pool and a few smaller ones, almost like dipping pools to cool off. The outdoor sunbeds are very nice, if you can get one. They did NOT enforce the rules when it came to " reserving " chairs and sunbeds, but life goes on.
The entire resort was " open air " . The only place to really cool off in the air conditioning was your room. It was sometimes difficult to eat, it was just so hot and stuffy. In their defense, it was July in Mexico.
The Brazilian Steak house was great, and we loved the smaller buffet at the pool. The portions at the other specialty restaurants were small but you can order all that you want . The buffet had a lot of " fancy " things, that we honestly didn't try, but you could always find something good. If you eat at the Main buffet, sit outside where you can catch the ocean breeze- it was a little stuffy in the main buffet.
One day we did go in to Playa Carmen to do a little shopping, and the bellhop found us the best cab driver that spoke English. He even waiting for us for 3 hours while we shopped and ate, no extra charge. $60 rounds trip USD
We did one excursion that was recommended by the staff at Akumal. The Mayan Adventures. Zip lines, and quad running in the jungle, and swimming in a Cenote- followed by lunch. A 5 hour excursion...absolutely GREAT !!
I only have a few complaints. The room service menu is very limited, and they will not let you carry food out from the buffets. At the end of the day , my son was tired and just wanted to sit in the air conditioned room and eat but the room service menu was the same things he had been eating the entire week ( typical kid, burgers, pizza, etc ) . The last night, he had an ear ache from swimmers ear. I asked if I could have Pasta from the buffet delivered to the room since he was "sick". I was willing to pay. The front desk proceeded to tell me that I shouldn't be feeding a sick kid pasta, that I should feed him soup. I didn't feel I should have to explain to the front desk what type of " sick " my child was, but hey- thank you for the unsolicited parenting advice and I guess attitude is included in the all-inclusive.
The fridge in the room was restocked everyday with, 1 coke, 1 coke light, 1 Fanta , 1 Sprite, 2 Heineken and a small pack of chips and a mini candy bar. That was very nice, BUT if you wanted anything other than that- they wouldn't do it.. My husband doesn't drink coffee and wanted only coke lights for a little caffeine in the morning. When he called to ask about that, he was also met attitude. They told us to walk up the beach, past Secrets and go to the store.
Even though that advice wasn't well received, it was a nice surprise. We would walk every night up the beach, past our beach- and through the Secrets Beach to a little shopping plaza by the community dive center. It was very secure, security EVERYWHERE and do a little shopping. They had souvenir shops and a couple of carry outs. There you could purchase soda, Gatorade, candy, chips and other things the resort did not provide. They even had antibiotic ear drops for my son.
They had some activities on the schedule for each day, but they simply handed us the schedule and didn't explain the where's and when's of the activities. There were very brief descriptions on the calendar.
We did not use the spa or attend a yoga class. But heard WONDERFUL things about both from other guests.
Overall, it was a nice resort - small and easy to get around. The rooms were thoroughly cleaned everyday. The snorkeling was perfect for our family.

Four of us flew from Ottawa with Air Canada.
The transfer to the resort was about an hour and a half, cerveza for sale on the bus for $3.
We were the only four people on the bus for our resort. We were greeted with a margarita and friendly staff. We were upgraded to penthouse suites in building 2. A bellboy took our bags and led the way to our rooms. Our two rooms were close enough and the bell boy took us through the room and pointed everything out.
Our first stop was the buffet, lots of choice and a nice atmosphere.
Our first dinner was in the gourmet specialty restaurant. We went at 6 and were seated right away. A nice dinner that included a happy birthday dessert and singing!
We actually liked both the red and white wines that night and asked our waiter if we could have bottles for our rooms. They had room service deliver both bottles to our room, complete with wine glasses and ice an hour later.
Breakfast buffet was excellent, again so much choice.
We did have to play the towel game before 7 each morning but we were up early anyway. The beach was wonderful, nice soft sand and the water was a nice temperature.
I snorkeled a few times and saw lots of fish and of course turtles.
We walked to the town of Akumal and Akumal beach, lots of people at Akumal beach and tons of snorkelers. Lots of nice souvenir shops too and we bought some silver from a high end silver shop there.
Drinks were good, we tried a few, my favorite was the Caesar, they had lots of Clamato juice for us Canadians. Even the wine was ok. We laughed because they served the red wine cold, really my only complaint of the whole week!
Resort was clean, especially I noted the bathrooms near the beach at the 24 hour snack bar were always clean.
It was nice to get fresh clean beach towels each morning without having to use towel cards.
The free wifi worked well for us, it worked in the lobby and in our room but not in the upper part of our penthouse. The penthouse was nice but we didn't use it too much.
The free digital safe was a nice touch as well. And the fridge was restocked every day with beer, soft drinks, chips and a chocolate bar.
Our group took part in yoga and Aqua gym every day and we did long beach walks.
A great vacation and I would recommend this resort, a solid 4.5 star....almost a 5 star.

A bit of a glitch on the way home, our Air Canada flight was cancelled due to mechanical issues but Air Canada moved quickly and found us all rooms in Cancun for the night. Our group was at the Grand Oasis Palm, a 4 star resort but it didn't compare to our Akumal resort. There was no free wifi and that was an issue with everyone needing to contact people at home. No free safe either. A huge resort with lots of action on the beach. We did have a nice dinner there and then pick up was around 7 the next morning for our flight home....just an extra night in Cancun to top off a great vacation.

From the resort, you may walk north along the beach 5 minutes to the entrance toward the little town of Akumal. They will have little shops, restaurants, grocery etc. If you are looking for a big variety of stores, you may want to go to Playa de carmen 30 minutes north by vehicle or bus.
