This is a very thorough review for people like me who like to know as much information as possible in order to make decisions!
Background info: we travelled as a couple, this is our second year in a row going to Ocean Coral & Turquesa, we booked the privilege program both times, and came at the same time both years to celebrate my birthday/Valentine’s Day. This review is based on both stays!

I want to start by mentioning a few staff members that really made our trip that much more amazing!

Ricardo: (Pool server at adults only side)
He is honestly so great, we actually were really hoping he would be our server again this year as we loved him so much last year. We were so excited when we found out he would be serving that pool all week! We actually scheduled our “off resort” day around when his day off would be. He’s super fast and efficient at his job and also goes way above and beyond to make us feel special, like we are his friend. Can’t say enough good things about him! Thanks Ricardo!

Angel: (Dinner server at the privilege lounge)
This guy is another reason we come back and another guy we hoped would be here this year. He is so kind, sweet and knows his English very well. He set a special table with balloons for my birthday (which is also Valentine’s Day) and made sure we were super taken care of even though it was other couples special day too. He even had the chef prepare a special meal for us.. I honestly felt like a royal thanks entirely to Angel. I would request him specifically to serve us if I could. Also, his co- worker that he worked with most nights was great as well! Thank you so much for all you do Angel!

Raymundo: (Our concierge/butler)
He was so kind, polite and again made us feel very comfortable and happy. He decorated our entire room for my birthday and set our jacuzzi for us any night we asked and however we asked! He was also helpful with any questions I had and was very responsive to texts! Thank you so much for making our week perfect Raymundo!

I want to mention that all the service we had at the resort was great.

The restaurants:

Privilege lounge - Our favourite spot. Breakfast is awesome, lunch is great and dinner is the best!
For breakfast we usually get the eggs Benedict with choice of either lobster or ham, and choice of cilantro or chipotle hollandaise. I always ask for just one lobster Benedict and sometimes omit the English muffin and it’s always great! *tip: ask for the egg to be soft otherwise you will get a hard yolk, and the cilantro hollandaise is superior.* Also, the French toast is top notch!
For lunch it is a tapas (small plate) restaurant.. which is great as many couples order 2-3 plates and share and it’s enough. We had the calamari, the monditos/small roasts and chicken skewers. They were all great! Perfect potions for us.
For dinner... literally mind blowing. I order the bone marrow every dinner and the salads are beautiful. The entrees are top level, short rib is one of our favourites. You just cannot go wrong with this restaurant!

Mexican - Super yum, we had the fish tacos and fajitas. The tacos were better.. the guac and chips they bring you are TO DIE FOR. So much yum. I love getting a little taste of Mexico on the resort.

Sensai - This is a GREAT spot. Everyone you talk to will agree. Food is very good... and the chefs make the whole experience so fun and exciting! I’m not gonna give away all the magic... but you HAVE to eat here no matter what.

Creperie bistro - This was not open last year for construction. This year we had lunch here a few times and it was hit or miss. Super dry, gross sandwich one day, super moist and delicious sandwich the next. And very slow service. Was nice to not go far from pool for lunch though. We heard from other couples that they couldn’t eat here due to improper foot ware or clothing... not cool for a restaurant literally on the pool deck.

Blue moon - We ate here once last year and once this year. It was much better this year than last year. The service is great, the plating is beautiful and the food is delicious! This year we had the risotto balls, the beef tar tar, salads, salmon and pork tenderloin. All of these dishes were extremely delicious and well done except for the pork.. it has great flavour but quite tough to chew. Last year we had the souvide beef tongue.. it was so good! Try new things people!

Buffets - They were honestly so good! We ate lunches here and we also went to the buffets around 5 or 6 when we had late dinner reservations at the other restaurants for 8 or 9. The main buffet is the best, the service is extremely fast and they have so much food... and it is all delicious. Pasta, meats, soup, fresh vegetables, tacos, etc. You name it, it’s there. They have theme nights seemingly every second night. They are so cool! We went to Mediterranean night, Mexican night and oriental night.. was hard to not over eat lol

Room service - We ordered room service 3 times during our stay. One time at 8pm, and twice at midnight. The menu changes based on the time of day. The midnight room service was so fast.. burgers, pizza, a burrito.. it satisfied my drunk hunger I can tell you that much! And it was like 15-20 minutes.. it was great. I also ordered spaghetti on our last night because I was sick (I get sick every single time I travel no matter where I go... DR, England, Mazatlan.. just my issues not the resort) the spaghetti was very good, and it settled my tummy.. it was perfect.

The service is this resort is fantastic, they changed our room on our third day at our request. And the new room was perfect.

The beach is kept well.. they collect the sea weed often to allow a nicer beach to walk on. People who don’t want sea weed.. just go to Cuba. The resort can’t control Mother Nature.. all they can do is try to clean it up quickly. They do this very well.

The bowling alley is a nice addition!!

Our stay was fantastic both times and we do want to return! However I do have to mention a negative in regards to the privilege program.

The privilege areas are no longer privilege areas. They have basically made the entire “privilege” side into the “El Beso” side. So even with privilege you must get up at 5am to have any chance at a spot even at the privilege beach... there were regular “blue wrist band” guests everywhere.

Last year the privilege guests had their own beach, and basically our own pool.. now you don’t. It’s shared between 3 price levels of guests.

Also saw non-privilege people at the privilege restaurant one night.. (that is one very huge perk of privilege, the food and service is the best there)

Also... they charge $25 US for 1 bottle of sun screen. It is a necessity.. especially when you run out accidentally. For us as Canadians that’s like $33 for one bottle.. so don’t forget your sun screen people! Bring 10 bottles! Lol

We have come to this resort via TUI holidays. I was very worried about coming due to negative reviews. Reviews worry me when lots of staff names are mentioned. Approx half hour from airport. This hotel is classed as a 5 star but I would say it is more like a 3 star. The resort is very clean and the staff are friendly and helpful. I have given an honest review with both good and bad points. Upon arrival we were greeted by staff who took our suitcases to our room. It took us approx 20 minutes to check in and we were then shown to our room. You have to pay a local tax via credit card which was, around £8 for a family of 3 for a weeks stay. The Reception area is lovely which leads onto a lovely terrace with lovely views. ROOMS: The room is a little dated but very spacious and clean and tidy. The beds are comfortable. The air con is fine but there is also a ceiling fan in the room. The bathroom again is a little dated but it is clean and tidy. There is no door to the bathroom just a curtain but then there are doors to the toilet and shower whilst in bathroom. There is an issue with the water pressure and sometimes have no water but we just waited. Spacious balcony. SWIMMING POOLS. The pools are lovely and big. There is a kids pool with some slides for younger children. Sunbeds get towels put on them early in morning and some are broken. Staff around pools are great and always getting you drinks. The spa team and trips team do come around quite a bit but we politely said no thank you and they left us be. There is a party pool where there is a swim up bar. This can be quite noisy and full of adults drinking. The foam party is lots of fun. FOOD. There is plenty of food options but it is not the best quality of food. We ate at buffet. Drinks are watered down but the lemonade and strawberry iced drink are lovely. For TUI guests easy to book tables at restaurants via What's app messages. There is a ice cream shop here which opens at 3pm and plenty of flavours to chose from. Mike's coffee shop is lovely. ENTERTAINMENT. They put on films and shows. If you go to the convention centre there is a teens club and opposite there is ten pin bowling which opens at 3pm. This, was included in our stay and lots of fun. There is a gift shop here but very expensive. You can also book trips at the hotel but we booked ours through TUI. BEACH. The beach is lovely and peaceful. There is an issue with seaweed here and they do their best to clean this up. Certain times of the day it can have an unpleasant smell which comes into resort but this didn't stop us enjoying our holiday and it's not the hotels fault. SPA. The Spa here is amazing and the massage was amazing. It was expensive at £125 for a full body but when on holiday its nice to treat yourself. We had a lovely holiday here and was pleasantly surprised and glad we came to this hotel

Ok resort, but needs improvement.
We travelled as two adults and a two year old. We travel a lot, and find this resort comparable to a 4 star in Cuba, 2 star in Jamaica and a 3 star in Dominican Republic.

The Good:
- Most staff are helpful;
- Close to Cancun airport
- Good kids club (we didn't use it, but we are in the vicinity and noticed that they kept the children in their care engaged)
- Nice area for teenagers; able to play pool, bowling and other activities'
-Route 66 and Brazilian restaurant were the better restaurants of the bunch
- Fruit bar - great for those of us that dont like alcohol or choose not to drink
- Mike's Coffee - good for a cappuccino or late, and a nice desert treat
- Ice-cream bar - good for an afternoon treat. They had sorbet which was good, as my child reacts to Dairy
- They ask if you have any allergies each time you enter a restaurant (not sure how the info is used, but atleast they ask)

The Bad
- Food is terrible and repetitive. Food lack flavor, and didn't taste like authentic Mexican food
- No face rags; we were a family of three and were given one face rag at arrival. This was not changed daily, until we went to the receptionist on Thursday to request more rags, since our request to our cleaner for face rags were not addressed.
- Sewage smell - some areas has a smell of sewage, especially on the first floor in the back alleys close to the restaurant
- Alcohol is all watered down. My husband asked for double shots of alcohol, and you still couldn't taste it
- Staff selling upgrades to their time share - this is what we disliked the most. It was hard for us to enjoy our time, due to the constant pestering from staff wanting to upsell their Privilege section.
- Pictures taken by their photography staff are quite expensive ; $20USD per picture.

If you have children between the ages of 4-12 this resort may work for them if they are not picky eaters and don't mind pizza and other simple snacks daily. I would not recommend this hotel for an adults only escape, as the privilege package is not worth it.

The bowling alley closes at 10pm, I think. Maybe 11. It was usually full whenever I went in but not sure if there was a list or just first come first serve.
