Think twice before you book Ocean Coral if you need any of your special requests to be met...and beware of scams at the Cancun airport...
It began when my girlfriend and I arrived to our room to find one kingsized bed. We had specifically requested 2 double beds and told our travel agent that we would not choose any resort who wouldn't guarantee this request. When we tried to refuse the room we were told that no other rooms were available that met our requirements that resided in the "priviledged area". We said we didn't care about being in this area, only that we had 2 beds. However, were were told, adamantly, that any availability would be assessed the next day. Unable to sleep, I went walking outside and saw a room with the lights on and curtains open -- it had 2 double beds and was obviously empty and was situated in the same "priviledged area". We immediately (yes, at 4 a.m.) went back to the front desk and were told that the room was reserved for an arriving guest. Even though we had been told that rooms couldn't be reserved in advance. After 2 sleepless nights and countless visits to the front desk, and a day of sitting with our luggage, we were finally given a room with 2 beds and settled in at 5:30 p.m. I missed the massage I booked that day and it felt like we missed 2 days of the vacation. However, we were luckier than some. At one point at the front desk, three middle aged women who had requested 2 double beds and a pull-out were told they would have to make-do with one king-sized bed! Yup...3 women, 1 bed.
Along on this trip were my elderly parents and another elderly couple who both requested ground floor rooms due to difficultly walking and a serious heart conidition. Both ended up on the 3rd floor with no option to move. Our friend with the heart condition ended up in a wheelchair; my mother spent a lot of time in her room since it was difficult for her to get up and down the stairs and the nearest elevator was periodically out of service.
It appears that none of the employees are empowered to provide real customer service, only lip service. Extremely frustrating for someone who really believes that a solution is in the works when in the background, the problem is just being ignored.
Privilege Services?? Not worth it...
We spent the extra (think it was $400) for the premium service that allowed access to the private beach. But unless you went down and laid out your towels by 6:30 am, there would be nowhere to sit. There are only 4 balinese huts and they are gone by 5:30 a.m. (I did get up one morning at this time to lay out some towels and there was 1 left). The private pool was accessible to all guests, so no privilege there. It took forever to be served in the private breakfast area and, in factl I often went up to the coffee bar to order my own coffee and and stood there waiting for it to be made -- but this area was far nicer than the main dining room. The Jacuzzi is the same tub as in the 'non'-privilege rooms except it's outside on the balcony -- they are nicer in the room. Preferential table booking for the themed restaurants? -- well yes this is good and I felt sorrry for other guests who couldn't book in advance but priviledged guests still must book everything early or you'll be eating at 6:00 or 10:00. Guests without this upgrade have to take their chances in line and could end up waiting for hours to get into a popular restaurant -- not so relaxing on vacation. If you really want the privilege service, buy it onsite -- guests in our party arrived without this upgrade and bought it at the resort for less that $200. That is, if you are bound and determined to go to this resort.
The food is ok in the general food area, but it feels like a cafeteria -- completely enclosed. In fact, most of the restaurants do not take advantage of the ocean views. The only one is "priviledged"!
The beach is gorgeous but that's because the loud truck that cleans up the seaweed comes by at least every hour.
Then it came time to leave. At the Cancun airport my luggage was about 5 kg overweight. The ticket agent gave me two choices 1. To pay $20/kg (total $100) or 2. Speak with the Thomas Cook agents to buy a special upgrade package that would allow this additional weight for $40 (plus other apparent benefits).
These agents were situated within the same area as passengers lining up to check luggage and get a boarding pass. The ID badges of these Thomas Cook's/Airport employees appeared official and since it was the ticket agents who directed us to them it seemed legitamite. However, they would only accept cash and when I asked for a receipt and/or some kind of document confirming I'd bought something I became suspicious. When I wouldn't accept a signature on my boarding pass as an official receipt they quickly returned my money and said I was approved. What? Well, my luggage had been sent anyway so the ticket agents weren't waiting for any approvals. This was a total scam that took advantage of many passengers and I'm sure they made thousands that night. Our flight left at 10:45 p.m., outside of regular business hours. I felt sick for the couple I met on this return flight who paid them well over $500 in order to get the family gifts back home.
All in all, I will never travel to Cancun again. There are too many other places that really appreciate your travel business. My winter vacation is already booked and planned...this year, I'm going to St. Lucia.
