Do we know who the new Minister for Women will be, or if we will even have one? Maybe Minister for How I Identify.

Annalise Dodd is in the Cabinet meeting. BBC she is sat 3 or 4 on Sir K's right.
There is a video, a wide angle at the end you can see her.

I started to watch that Piers Morgan/Lisa Nandy clip, but I'm afraid my tolerance is low these days. I only lasted about two minutes in of LN refusing to answer Morgan's question, but instead deflecting with Caster Semenya and such. I assume there's another 7 minutes of that. It's just another example of the same old, same old. Starmer's been doing it for ages, they all have. Never a straight answer to a straight question.

Still nothing. Am refreshing Twitter regularly! I thought Vallance and Timpson were excellent appointments, praying for a good outcome. It'll never be Rosie sadly, but hopefully someone that's not completely captured...

Other possibility is that they restructure it into a Equality, Diversity & Inclusion type thing...

Anneliese Dodds is the Chair of the Labour Party and will have a seat at cabinet because of that. She doesn’t have a government department to run.

So is there no women and equalities minister?

That and a paedophile apologist leading the EHRC, I think we see the general direction here.

Though I'd rather the job not exist at all than become the evil that is EDI. Which should stand for Exclusion, Discrimination and Injustice in my experience (and I'm not just talking about women's issues here - disabled people tend to get ignored in EDI too).

Not at the moment. They haven’t appointed any ministers yet, bar two. We don’t have a Minister for Social Care or Universities yet, either. They will make these appointments over the next few days. The Women and Equalities Minister will no doubt be among the announcements they will make.

Aye

From what I recall, the layers of government are, roughly:

Secretaries of State (attend Cabinet)
Ministers of State (may sometimes attend Cabinet as necessary)
Junior Ministers (do not attend Cabinet)

David Miliband was Schools' Minister when (I think) Charles Clarke was Sos for Education, for example. I went to an event where they were both present - very intelligent and personable, unlike Ruth Kelly who preceded Clarke as a (woeful and rude) SoS.

My proposal, which will be implemented no doubt as soon a pig flies over Downing Street, is for JKR to be put in the HoL and then given the Women & Equalities brief, just like they’ve done with Mr Timpson & the Prisons brief 😁

From what I hear from my Canadian contacts, Trudeau won’t be in charge much longer, such is his unpopularity. So good luck with that, Justin.

Not sure if this has been posted but apparently Anneliese is now Minister for Development.

In the past whoever has been Minister for Women and Equalities, this has been like their 2nd (tier) job.

Kemi Badenoch main post was Minister of Business and secondly Women and Equalities.

I wonder if Starmer was thinking of appointing Thangam Debbonaire. We'll never know.

How strange - the wikipedia page that I quoted saying Annaliese Dodds was Minister for Development now doesn't say that!

Well, I suppose it should be David Lammy - after all he knows so much about women that he says on national TV and radio transwomen can "grow" a cervix after treatment.....but instead they are giving him the job of Foreign Secretary. Imagine - trusting a guy to fill one of the most powerful and senior jobs in the country who is so monumentally stupid that he thinks blokes can grow a cervix.

Unfortunately, that was Starmer himself “Appearing on the BBC's Andrew Marr show, Sir Keir Starmer was asked if it was transphobic to say only women have a cervix.
The Labour leader replied: "Well, it is something that shouldn't be said. It is not right."

Labour conference: Not right to say only women have a cervix, says Starmer

The Labour leader calls for "mature, respectful debate" over trans rights after MP's comments.

Good god. Jess Phillips? The proponent of the "spousal veto"? Would you wish for Nokes, had the Tories won?

I think Jess Phillips would be a better option than many. I might have this wrong but wasn’t she pro clarifying the Equality Act when they had that debate in parliament last year?

According to this article (published on 2 hours ago) this position still hasn't been filled.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cw0yg50zy5vo

This article has an interesting chart showing who had the role and has then got it in the new Cabinet, and who hasn't.
https://labourlist.org/2024/07/labour-general-election-results-starmer-new-cabinet-full-list/

Seems that Emily Thornberry has lost the chance to really be Attorney General, and Starmer has handed it to an old crony (male).

" ... The PM has chosen Richard Hermer as attorney general, rather than Emily Thornberry who had shadowed the role.

Mr Hermer, a friend of Sir Keir's from when he was a barrister, will receive a life peerage to allow him to sit in the House of Lords and attend cabinet ... "

That's a nice reward for loyalty, or is it just women's role to keep the seat warm for a man who needs to be appointed once it is a real position. (Not a supporter of Thornberry but its a very public insult.)

Quote is from BBC article posted higher up.

Goodness me while I’m pleased about so many women it’s a very white look for a multicultural country.

Unfortunately, that was Starmer himself

No it was David Lammy.

Nick Ferrari asked, "Is It transphobic to say only women can have a cervix?"

David Lammy replied: "I don't know if it's transphobic but it's not accurate, it's probably the case that trans women don't have ovaries but a cervix is something that .. I understand that a cervix is something you can have after various procedures, hormone treatments and all the rest of it."

Yes, it wasn’t Starmer who said men could grow a cervix. Starmer said it was wrong to say that only
women could have one.

Misogynists both!

God it would be awesome if he suddenly appointed Rosie, though pigs might fly.

Hoping Patrick Valance can be a voice of reason as far as science and biology are concerned. (No idea of his stance on these matters though).
