The Canaries are a fool-proof family holiday option year-round, thanks to reliable sunshine, beautiful beaches, and plenty of activities to suit all ages and interests.

While Tenerife and Gran Canaria might dominate the recommendations lists for family breaks in the Canaries, Lanzarote deserves your attention. Across the island you’ll find aquaparks, water sports, amazing walks, beautiful beaches. And beyond the resorts, there's an otherworldly volcanic landscape to explore.

While the island certainly caters to outdoorsy-types, the main tourist areas are packed with fantastic hotels for those of us who would rather sip sangria by the pool, or be dazzled by evening entertainment.

We’ve trawled the Mumsnet Holiday threads for the best family-friendly hotels in Lanzarote, from luxury properties to budget bases and everything in between. Whether you’re after a relaxing hotel with a great kids’ club, or an adventure-packed trip to entertain active teens (or if you’re just seeking the best all-inclusive grub), we've got the Lanzarote hotel picks you don’t want to miss.

"The beach is literally right at the hotel steps. The marina next door has some lovely shops but, more important for me, some lovely restaurants which both adults and children enjoyed. I'd recommend this place without hesitation in terms of location."

"We went to the Yaiza last year with a five-month-old. We had a lovely time and were really impressed with the hotel. The suites are big and roomy, food was v good, staff v helpful and friendly. Very good for a child-friendly holiday - but no steps for pram down to promenade behind beach."

Our verdict

One hotel that's repeatedly referenced on the Mumsnet Lanzarote forums is the Princess Yaiza. The location is unbeatable, with the beach on the doorstep, and local shops and restaurants nearby.

However, you might not feel much need to leave the resort, as there’s so much going on inside. You’ll find six outdoor pools (including a kids’ pool), a gym and a spa, as well as activities such as tennis, snorkelling and diving available for an additional charge.

Foodies will be impressed by Yaiza’s seven restaurants, serving a mixture of Spanish, Asian, Italian, and BBQ food. Breakfast comes highly rated, too.

During peak season the Princess Yaiza is on the pricier side, and expect it to be busy (which is a blessing or a curse depending on your preference). But, if you’re looking for a reliable family holiday in Lanzarote, this hotel comes highly recommended.

"Almost identical to the Yaiza very lovely inside and out and great rooms but half the price (well almost) we had a look around as we have been to the Yaiza several times and are finding it a little expensive now with the Euro being so bad. They were really helpful and had great kids facilities, lovely pools etc."

The location of Los Jameos can’t be beaten, as it’s only a short drive from the airport and right next to the beach. Best of all though is how family-friendly the hotel is. There’s a babies’ splash pool and a kids’ pool, plus a fun and colourful kids’ club. At night there's a kids’ disco to keep the little ones happy. The spacious family rooms also sleep two adults and two children comfortably.

Other facilities for the grown-ups include a gym, a spa, and two 18-hole golf courses nearby. Los Jameos is a little lacking in culinary options, with only one restaurant and a handful of bars serving snacks. However, you won’t go hungry at the world-cuisine buffet, and the palm tree-lined restaurant terrace is a gorgeous spot to dine.

While this hotel isn’t super cheap, what you get for your money is as good as more expensive competitors, and the children’s facilities ensure you’ll get some peace too.

All the benefits of a TUI Blue resort without the hefty price tag? Flamingo Beach is one of the more affordable TUI Blue resorts. A 35-minute transfer from the airport, this low-rise resort is set on Playa Flamingo's sandy bay, a short walk from Marina Rubicon and Playa Blanca. You can even catch a ferry to nearby Fuerteventura should you wish to explore more of the Canary Islands during your stay.

You'll find loads of loungers and parasols for soaking up the almost guaranteed sun and you can switch between the large family pool, activity pool or the more relaxed pool depending on your mood.

With tennis, football, yoga and swimming lessons up for grabs plus a kids' clubs running six days a week, this hotel is our pick as the best hotel for fun activities for the whole family. There's also a full roster of evening entertainment including kids' parties, mini discos and character meet and greets.

Best luxury hotel
Our verdict

For a family holiday to remember, the five-star Hotel Fariones delivers luxury without compromising on kiddy-friendliness. This hotel was refurbished in 2020, and its fresh, minimal decor and landscaped grounds are stunning.

Like all the best hotels in Lanzarote, Hotel Fariones is only a two-minute walk from the beach. There’s also an infinity pool plus Jacuzzis, so you can enjoy sea views without leaving the resort. There's also a sports complex next to the hotel that guests can access, which includes tennis and paddle courts, an outdoor crossfit area, and a gym that offers fitness classes. The guest experience centre can also organise boat trips and other excursions for you.

Foodies will be impressed by the buffet and three à la carte restaurants and the various bars. Evening entertainment includes live music by the pool.

While children are welcome here, there is no kids' club or other dedicated facilities for children, so this hotel is better suited to older kids.

Best family-friendly apartments

Nautilus Lanzarote Aparthotel, Puerto del Carmen

Our verdict

If you like to do your own thing on holiday, then the Nautilus Aparthotel offers the flexibility of an apartment with the facilities of a hotel. Like many hotels in Lanzarote, it’s situated right on the beach, and as it’s less than two miles from the airport you don’t need to worry about lengthy transfers.

The complex features two heated pools, and apartments have their own terraces with sun loungers if you’d rather sunbathe in peace. There’s also mini golf to entertain the kids (and the kids-at-heart).

Nautilus features unique modern art, and the suites are simple and fresh. Breakfast is included here, and there are plenty of restaurants and shops nearby to eat out or eat in.

Best for babies and toddlers

Los Zocos Impressive Lanzarote, Costa Teguise

What Mumsnet users say
Raahh · Stayed + rated
"We really enjoyed it - DCs were 5 and 18 months at the time. Was a kids club that DS loved. Very close to the beach, which was great, and at the quiet end of Costa Teguise. Don't know if all-inclusive would be worth the money - the evening buffet (we tried it once) was a bit limited.  We really enjoyed it - I think for the price it was great for a very child-friendly holiday."

Our verdict

If you’re looking for a holiday that you and the youngest members of your family will enjoy, then Los Zocas offers excellent child-friendly facilities while providing plenty for grown-ups too.

Your toddlers will love the mini splash pool with water spouts and mushroom-themed waterfalls. There’s a children’s playground and pool, and a children’s club and indoor play area for kids aged 4-12. Other family-friendly features include access to high chairs and cots, and self-service laundry facilities in case of any accidents or messy mealtimes.

For tired parents there’s a beautiful garden space for sunbathing, spa facilities, and a quiet pool. The rooms include a balcony or terrace, as well as a kitchenette.

Food-wise, you’ll find two buffet restaurants, and kids will love the giant pirate ship in the El Boulevard Restaurant! There’s bed and breakfast, half board, all-inclusive, and all-inclusive premium options available.

Best hotel with water slides
Our verdict

This hotel more than delivers for kids, with an impressive splash park, and both a kids' and teens' club. There’s even a kids-only cinema for when you’re needing some quiet time. In the evenings, dancers, acrobats and musicians all feature on the entertainment bill.

As well as the main restaurant, you’ll find an Italian a la carte that’s kiddie friendly. Other facilities include a spa and a gym, and the hotel is only a short walk from the beach.

There are a number of family suites on offer, meaning you’ll have a spacious home base to spread out in while you explore Lanzarote.

"I loved it, our kids went to the kids club every day and really enjoyed it. We went just before Christmas. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed the food, we preferred the main buffet restaurant to the other restaurants."

Our verdict

If you tire of buffet restaurants on holiday, then you’ll be spoilt for choice at Rubicon Palace with its 10 (!) restaurants and bars. Dining options include Italian, Asian, and steak, though the main restaurant also packs a punch with different food stalls dotted around the room. There’s even a coffee shop.

Kids aren’t overlooked at Rubicon Palace, with a creche and a kids' club on-site. There’s also a playground and a playhouse that’s packed with activities including craft projects and a fancy dress box.

They’ve not forgotten the grown-ups either, with facilities including an aqua gym, water polo, beach volleyball, minigolf, boules, excursions and dance classes. There’s also a luxury spa for when you need that extra bit of ‘me time’. Rooms feature a balcony or terrace, and there’s the option to book a room with a sea view.

Best for entertainment

Gran Castillo Tagoro Family & Fun Playa, Playa Blanca

Our verdict

If family holidays for you (or at least for your kids) are less about relaxing and more about doing, then the Gran Castillo Tagro has some of the best facilities in Lanzarote that we’ve come across.

This hotel is extremely kiddy-friendly. As well as a selection of family rooms and suites (with ocean views), there are also kids' rooms with fun decor and admission to the 5D cinema included.

Active kids will love the Castleland pool with its dragon water slide. The kids’ club will keep them busy with everything from playing football or dodgeball to games in the water or table tennis, not to mention the craft workshops, PlayStation, mini-basketball championships and theme days such as Pirate, Minions or Magic Days. There’s also a kids' self-service buffet to fuel tired little ones after all the activities. Maybe you’ll get that downtime after all!

Grown-ups will love the selection of restaurants, spa facilities, and immersive evening entertainment. This hotel is also within walking distance of local shops, bars and restaurants, as well as a large beach. The wider Playa Blanca area is great for water sports if that’s your thing, too.
