Here’s a thought that’s helping me stay afloat in the ocean of Generative AI (think LLMs, ChatGPT, etc.) that has flooded my daily routine: Always keep in mind that Generative AI is the most prematurely launched technology in history. Most technology shifts as significant as Generative AI are far better thought out before they become visible to relatively non-techy people like me. Take the smartphone, for example. Smartphones became possible due to a series of innovations including better batteries, miniaturization of components, and advancements in wireless technology. But they didn’t hand consumers the batteries, tiny components, and wireless chips and say, “figure out how to use this stuff in your everyday life and work.” Instead, legions of engineers and UX designers spent years carefully thinking through how to combine those innovations into an easy-to-use smartphone. App developers then thoughtfully created incredibly useful and user-friendly apps like Uber and Airbnb. As a result, by the time smartphones reached us non-techy people, the technology was already exquisitely well thought through. That’s not how it’s working out with Generative AI. OpenAI created ChatGPT, made it available for free, and launched it with unprecedented hype. The result? Anybody with a computer can directly interact with an unvarnished version of a very powerful technology. But they’ve left it to us to figure out the “use cases” or situations in our real lives where Generative AI can be genuinely helpful. Yes, some technology developers have reacted quickly and done a nice job of incorporating generative AI into products in meaningful ways (e.g., digital note-takers and search engines). But overall, Generative AI is still in its early stages and largely untested. If Generative AI were a food additive, the FDA would require years of testing before even considering it for human consumption. Now how does knowing that help me think of Generative AI? It helps to accept that the journey with Generative AI is akin to being handed a powerful tool without an instruction manual. This means that an approach based on constant learning and continued trial and error is a reality. As frustrating as that can be, it’s also a massive opportunity. Why? Because generative AI has put cutting-edge technology in the hands of anyone curious enough to explore it. But as for the use cases, that’s for us to figure out.
