This article in HBR makes a case for looking at degrowth proposals for social ecological well being given that evidence historically and in the present don’t hold too much hope for proposals on green growth and energy transition. One of the key insights here is on the energy transition and how it is an illusion. Do read https://lnkd.in/gcE-4wbP #degrowth #energytransition

Brilliant piece by Prakash Kashwan The climate crisis is rooted in inequalities and addressing gender and caste based discrimination and oppression is an important part of climate action. We can’t simply adopt solutions from the West and ignore age old knowledge and wisdom that resides within communities to address the challenges of climate change #gender #climatechange #climatejustice #caste https://lnkd.in/gtTNCZU8

This article in India Development Review (IDR) raises an important point on the need to develop capacities at the grassroots for research without being extractive, at a level that can feed into decision making, intervention and policy design. While this will be hugely helpful in areas like GBV it could also fill a gap we now have on the impact of climate at local levels and resulting vulnerabilities. https://lnkd.in/gfxFnuZJ #data #research #grassroots #capacities

The collaboration with Bidyut Mohanty and the team at SPREAD on gender-commons-climate has been a little over a year. What started as an exercise to encourage women in villages of Koraput to assess the status of their natural commons and the respective resources that support their livelihood turned into an exercise of understanding culture & enabling agency and space for negotiation to protect commons through women’s leadership. And to see them presenting their findings and suggestions to a larger audience at the district level with officials, MLAs and their community members is a moment of real power. Gratitude to the women leaders, entire team and look forward to deepening this work. #climatechange #gender #commons #womenleadership Ankita Bhatkhande Saumya Shrivastava Elizabeth Soby Vinuta Gopal

This is an detailed piece on where India stands in terms of climate action which is skewed towards mitigation yet without a clear pathway and there isn’t enough focus on adaptation. Repeatedly forest based communities have been sidelined and not heard in amending existing policy or making new policy in the country. #climatechange #climatepolicy #climateaction https://t.co/ZXA5LrsfVh

Thank you for sharing this! Ritodhi Chakraborty Couldn’t agree more that it is such powerful writing that intrigues immediately. The source of most of our imagination in times of environmental and other crisis is driven by stories of the Empire and limited understanding of history of how millions actually lived. But good news that is that new information is emerging for us to learn from and the book “The Dawn of Everything” is a good starting point.
This is one of the most important and powerful examples of writing. It challenges our imperially constructed notions of humanity and society. It also forces us to confront the historical and ongoing erasure of the every person. #justice #science #history “On a global scale, we are witnessing a revolution in our understanding of ancient demography. To ignore it, these days, is to indulge in a cruel sort of intellectual prank, by which the genocide of Indigenous populations – a direct consequence of the planetary revolt against freedom, in the past 500 years – is naturalised as a perennial absence of people. Nor can we just assume that if we want to understand the prospects for our modern world, the only ‘big’ stories worth telling are those of empire”

🔍 New Research: The role of MNREGA as a robust social safety net in improving livelihoods and increasing forest cover in Kangra, HP. But in order for the scheme to be effective collective action & decentralised planning is critical. Studies like these also call for considering MNREGA more seriously for climate adaptation and resilience interventions and thinking of a community of practice that could benefit a larger ecosystem. https://lnkd.in/giRxbFaV #livelihoods #forests #climatesolutions
