“It was my first role in Academia I had the opportunity to meet Ankita Bhatkhande. Two months into my job and I was informed that she was hired as my manager. She was younger than me but far more knowledgeable, well-researched and demonstrated a superior level of critical thinking. Embracing this change, I readily accepted her leadership. Days were normal but conversations were rich. And slowly I began to notice a marked improvement in my organisational skills. Ankita introduced systematic folder structures, established clear nomenclature, and efficiently categorised tasks. This streamlined approach significantly enhanced accessibility and productivity. Jobs were discussed in depth from different perspectives with flexible timelines. One of Ankita's most commendable traits was her exceptional time management. Regardless of the magnitude of the task, she consistently ensured its completion well ahead of schedule, setting a remarkable example for the team. Working alongside Ankita has been truly enriching, particularly in refining my organizational abilities. Her influence has left a lasting impression, and I am grateful for the opportunity to have collaborated with such a skilled and inspiring leader.”

‘Do Not Talk Like the Other Castes’: Language and Everyday Casteism in a Marathi Brahmin Household in Mumbai

Each chapter draws on different methods and approaches but all consider lived experiences and experiential narrations. Considering Guru and Sarukkai’s path-breaking work on ‘Experience, Caste and the Everyday Social’ (2019), this volume applies the insights of the theories to multiple settings, issues and communities. This edited volume brings together a range of scholars to reflect on the varied ways in which caste is manifested and experienced in social life. Unique to this volume, Brahmin and other dominant castes' experiences are considered, rather than simply focusing on the lives of oppressed castes (Dalits). Analysis of cross-caste friendships or romances and marriages, furthermore, brings out the intimate and ingrained aspects of caste. Taken together, therefore, the contributions in this volume offer rich insights into caste and its consciousness within the framework of everyday experiences.
