🔍 New Research: The role of MNREGA as a robust social safety net in improving livelihoods and increasing forest cover in Kangra, HP. But in order for the scheme to be effective collective action & decentralised planning is critical. Studies like these also call for considering MNREGA more seriously for climate adaptation and resilience interventions and thinking of a community of practice that could benefit a larger ecosystem. https://lnkd.in/giRxbFaV #livelihoods #forests #climatesolutions

Hats off to FAO, the Norad - Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation, and #Tunisia for their remarkable initiative, striving to grant social protection to artisanal fisherfolk. These resilient individuals are among the most vulnerable to the harsh impacts of #climatechange. Their lives and livelihoods are intricately tied to the ebb and flow of the tides, and their struggles resonate throughout coastal fishing communities worldwide, including those in the #Philippines. During my own visits to fishing villages and communities, I've had candid conversations with artisanal fisherfolk and seaweed farmers about the greatest threats they face. Time and again, the resounding answer has been the big double C: Climate Change, a gradual yet deadly force that undermines all aspects of sustainable development. To safeguard these fisherfolk from the uncertainties of their livelihood, providing robust social safety nets and minimum income is crucial. In many instances, such safety nets already exist, but unfortunately, they remain underutilized due to limited awareness and the complexities of registration systems, leaving fishers unable to access the much-needed social protection programs. There are four key takeaways from the Social Protection for Fisheries and Aquaculture (SocPro4Fish) project that we can all learn from: ⬆ Increase awareness through collaborations between government agencies, fishing associations, and development partners to reach out to fishing communities to inform fisherfolk about about available social protection programs, the benefits they are entitled to, and how they can access support when needed. 📝 Simplify registration by streamlining procedures and aligning contribution levels with income to remove bureaucratic barriers and ensure greater coverage within the sector. 🤝 Collaborate with stakeholders such as government agencies, international organizations, development partners, fisher unions, and research institutions to targeted and effective social protection policies. 🌟 Extend social protection in other informal and seasonal sectors. Building resilience across various industries will contribute to reducing poverty and promoting sustainable development. Of course, these efforts need to be nationally-driven and anchored on national development priorities so that they are responsive to the unique circumstances of the communities that need these initiatives the most. https://lnkd.in/gJpJKEnJ #2030agenda #sustainabledevelopmentgoals #sustainabledevelopment #sdg2 #sdg8 #sdg10 #sdg13 #sdg14 #climateaction #socialsecurity

Through M4CR Coastal communities are among the most vulnerable in Indonesia. Their poverty rates are higher than the national average, and they face multiple threats to their livelihoods. The poverty rate in coastal villages is 1.27 percent higher than in non-coastal villages, with the average fisher earning less than the minimum wage. Coastal communities have limited access to secondary schools, safe water, electricity, and transportation. The 2.5 million households involved in small-scale fisheries are characterized by high poverty rates (one-fifth of Indonesia’s poor come from fishing households) and vulnerability, partly because of declining ecosystem health and climate change. Indonesia hosts 40 of the 54 global species of true mangroves. Indonesia’s mangroves store nearly 4,000 tons of carbon dioxide (tCO2) per hectare (commonly referred to as “blue carbon”). Mangroves are a crucial component of livelihoods in coastal communities, providing important sources of food and income. In mangrove villages, local communities often harvest shrimp, eel, clam, crab, sea snail, and various fish species from mangrove ecosystems, which provide income and food for families. The Government of Indonesia (GoI) takes bold steps to revert mangrove losses and rehabilitate degraded or deforested mangrove areas. In 2020, it launched the National Mangrove Rehabilitation program, with the ambitious goal of restoring 600,000 hectares of mangroves between 2021 and 2024. They allocated over US$50 million in the national budget to mangrove rehabilitation as part of the National Recovery Program to COVID-19, with funds mainly used to pay for labor in coastal communities (cash-for-work). Over 30,000 hectares of mangroves were restored in 2021 through actions led by the Peatland and Mangrove Restoration Agency (Badan Restorasi Gambut dan Rehabilitasi Mangrove [BRGM]). The program is supported by Presidential Regulation 120 of 2020, which broadened the mandate of BRGM to include mangroves and extended its mandate until the end of 2024. This project will support policy and institutional reforms as the foundation for more effective mangrove management, large-scale rehabilitation of degraded and deforested mangrove areas, and improved livelihoods of coastal communities. As well as the project seeks to promote green, resilient, and inclusive development among coastal communities by deploying a landscape approach to mangrove management (conservation and rehabilitation) while strengthening the resilience of coastal communities. The project will finance the rehabilitation of deforested and degraded mangrove areas and promote sustainable mangrove landscape management. It will build capacity at the national, subnational, and village levels to assess sites for mangrove rehabilitation.

AidEnvironment, on behalf of the Ministry of Water and Environment (MWE) took the initiative to empower local people in bee keeping by training and supporting them with production technology and access to market. This is because their farming land reduced due gulley rehabilitation and riverbank restoration activities. There is need to create harmony between man and the environment through training and supporting communities in alternative sustainable livelihood projects like beekeeping. The project intends to contribute to poverty alleviation and enhance environmental security. The project will help communities generate income through self employment, provision of honey, a much needed health food and medicine, and employment of other members of the local community. This reduces pressure on the environment as people become economically self-sufficient from income generating activity instead of encroaching on riverbanks for farming.

Of the world's 8 billion people, 1 billion represents young people living in the developing world, particularly in regions where sustenance is heavily dependent on land and natural resources. This year's #WorldDayToCombatDesertificationandDrought spotlights the future of land stewardship - our most precious resource to ensure the prosperity of billions of people around the world. Yet, we cannot talk about the future of land stewardship without talking about children, who will soon be responsible to lead that stewardship - especially in parts of the globe like rural #Africa where many livelihoods are at risk due to a deteriorating land health. Involve the Children is working with the most at risk children to change this reality. Equipping them with vital skills to be land use stewards in their communities, while removing obstacles in their path to accessing an education.

Encouraging herding communities to #diversify their #livelihoods beyond pastoralism can help reduce #competition over limited resources. Governments, working with development partners, should invest in #alternative income-generating activities like small-scale agriculture, businesses, and vocational training. Also, promoting sustainable resource management practices, such as water conservation and rangeland rehabilitation, can help alleviate resource scarcity and conflicts and strengthen #foodsecurity, #economic opportunity, and #socialcohesion. What strategies have you seen successfully foster livelihood diversification in pastoral communities? We are interested to learn from your experiences.

Building communities who accelerate CleanTech commercialisation through creative knowledge exchange programmes | Founder EcoTech Evolution | Director, Scottish Rural & Islands Transport Community
The Rural Services Network team have dobe a good job of scrutinising DEFRA's Rural Proofing report. Unsuprisingly, it leaves a lot to be desired with respect to explaining how many of the funding programmes it references will materially benefit rural communities where it costs more to live and work, and where vital services continue to be cut. This includes bus services. Very frustrating that this is DEFRAs 3rd Rural Proofing report that they are not getting to grips with the pressing needs of rural communities. They hardly need reminding but what the heck why not. Climate change is making a bad situation much worse for those who work in rural communities including farmers. This isn't all about money. It's about policy makers having real, genuine interest, and "skin in the game" with respect to rural economic and social development.
