Broadliners move more than 91 million pounds of mushrooms a year up from 69 million pounds in 2020. ➡️ Quick-service restaurants (QSRs) represent 27.4% of broadliner mushroom sales, up from 22.0% in 2019. This equates to 25 million pounds sold annually. ➡️ #Pizza and Italian restaurants are the number one channel within QSRs with a share of 39.4% of pounds. This is up from 35.5% in 2021. There are a variety of micronutrients that are important for supporting a healthy immune system, including selenium and vitamins D and B6, which can be found in mushrooms. 4️⃣ Mushrooms are the only source of vitamin D in the produce aisle. Just five UV-light exposed white, raw mushrooms (90g) contain more than a full day’s recommended allowance (118%) of vitamin D. 5️⃣ Mushrooms can be food for a better mood. Grocery deli-prepared food and meals generated $29.9 billion over the 52 weeks ending April 28th 2024, according to data insights company Circana. Deli-prepared foods are outperforming many other areas of the store, with dollar gains of 5.4% when compared to the prior year levels. Unit sales (the number of items sold) increased 3.0%. #Salads are the third-largest seller in the deli-prepared foods section, behind entrees and prepared meats. Pre-packaged salads and salad bars combined are also gaining in unit and volume sales as consumers seek out convenient solutions for lunch and dinner. Nearly two-thirds of Americans consume mushrooms, counting fresh mushrooms bought in the produce department, mushrooms included in restaurant meals as well as mushrooms used as an ingredient in frozen pizzas or a jar of spaghetti sauce. The vast majority of mushrooms eating occasions, 80%, reflect usage as an addition, topping or ingredient to another base dish, such as pizza, a burger or salad. Consumers say that 95% of these occasions had mushrooms included in the original meal, whether bought in-store or at a restaurant, whereas 5% added mushrooms to the meal leftovers. Mushrooms have great versatility and add umami – a savory, meaty flavor – adding depth and richness to all kinds of dishes, ranging from soups and sauces to stir-fries and salads.
