Hacker understands that to create just spaces, we must engage in just processes for imagining, making, and maintaining those spaces. Our Community Centered Design Process holds our design accountable to consistent conversation with the people who will inhabit the spaces. During our Community Centered Design Process at Skagit Valley College Culinary Arts & Library Commons, we engaged over 50 students from 8 student organizations in more than 6 hours of collaborative making. Our Method of Engaging incorporated a process of collage-making, where we produced 10 distinct artifacts that represented the values, conditions, and aspirations of a diverse group of students and worked to uncover essential resonances and dissonances in the vision of the Culinary Arts & Library Commons. Hacker Associate Principal, Sarah Weber, NCIDQ, Sr. Interior Designer, is joining a panel at the 2024 American Library Association Annual Conference & Exhibit in San Diego on July 1st to discuss "Designing Libraries with Diverse Communities in Mind Using Lenses of Neurodiversity and Process-Driven Approaches". Reflecting on her experience as the Lead Interior Designer at Skagit Valley College, Culinary Arts & Library Commons, she will discuss the Community Centered Design Process for engagement and the collaborative Method of Engaging approach that utilized collage artwork to open safe and comfortable dialogues with students, gaining input and understanding of their and their communities' needs. #alaac24 #americanlibraryassocation #hackerarchiects #librariesforall
