Featured on the cover and current issue of Luxe is the Hoke Residence, “a high desert retreat is inspired by the surrounding rocks and native trees.” “Both Corey Martin and the clients believe that residential architecture can, and should, be more than shelter. “I treat the work I do as art,” Martin explains. “I want it to strike a chord and elicit an emotional response.” The owner agrees, adding, “Homes today are vessels of expression, a signature of who we are and how we live. And I hope, through this house, people can see the freedom we have to change the program of how we live our lives. Our homes should embody our hopes and wishes.” Architecture and Interiors: Hacker Contractor: KN Vision Homes Structural: Madden & Baughman Engineering, Inc Landscape: SZABO Landscape Architecture Lighting: O- Hacker design team: Corey Martin, Nick Hodges, Nicolas Pectol, Nic Smith, Emily Knudsen Leland, Sohee Ryan Words: Maile Pingel for Luxe Photos: Jeremy Bittermann / JBSA #hackerarchitects #hackerinteriors #luxemagazine #bendoregon

We are an architecture and interior design studio of 50+ united by a desire to create spaces that enrich the world.
About us
What can our work make possible? We are a studio of 50+ united by a desire to create spaces that enrich the world – spaces that make us feel more connected to the landscape, each other and ourselves. We believe that architecture is best when it’s an honest expression of the people and institutions it serves, when it interacts dynamically with its surroundings, makes humble use of the earth’s resources, and has an understated dignity based on carefully crafted construction and the natural beauty of materials. More than a craft or practice, we see architecture as a calling to create beauty and serve humanity, requiring from each of us our deepest listening, questioning, curiosity and engagement. #27 firm in the nation, ARCHITECT magazine, 2018

Summertime outdoors exploring the Portland Japanese Garden, a 12-acre urban oasis set within Portland’s lush Washington Park 🌿 This new Cultural Village serves as a connector of the stunning Oregon landscape, Japanese arts, and a subtle architectural form. The expansion project was a collaboration between Hacker and our friends & partners at KENGO KUMA & ASSOCIATES with landscape by Walker Macy and built by Hoffman Construction Company. https://lnkd.in/gwmtZCxM 📸: Jeremy Bittermann

Hacker has served the High Desert Museum in Bend, Oregon since 1986, completing numerous projects over the years including master plans and updates, new buildings, renovations and exhibit remodels, aligning like-minded missions and values of connecting visitors to landscape and the animals who inhabit it in a responsible and inclusive way. Guided by the Living Building Challenge, when designing an expansion to the High Desert Museum, the design team asked the overarching question: What if every single act of design and construction made the world a better place? https://lnkd.in/gSd9SK2n Photos: Chris Murray Productions #hackerarchitects #highdesertmuseum #museumdesign #zoodesign

Hacker was a proud sponsor of this year’s NOMA PDX PROJECT PIPELINE, an architecture design and justice summer camp! https://lnkd.in/eftkvHd "This year was bigger than ever with 47 middle school students joining us over three days at PCC Opportunity Center to learn about architecture, planning, and design. Students collaborated on a project in the commercial zone on NE 42nd Ave and NE Killingsworth to create places to live, learn, gather, grow food, recreate, and heal to support the current residents in the Cully neighborhood." The students’ work is now on display at OMSI through July 6th. Join us this Saturday, June 29th, from 1-3 PM for a special Open House event! Hacker's Keri Erwin volunteered in the summer camp this week (pictured here). #noma #nomapdx #projectpipeline #hackerarchitects #mentorship

Hacker understands that to create just spaces, we must engage in just processes for imagining, making, and maintaining those spaces. Our Community Centered Design Process holds our design accountable to consistent conversation with the people who will inhabit the spaces. During our Community Centered Design Process at Skagit Valley College Culinary Arts & Library Commons, we engaged over 50 students from 8 student organizations in more than 6 hours of collaborative making. Our Method of Engaging incorporated a process of collage-making, where we produced 10 distinct artifacts that represented the values, conditions, and aspirations of a diverse group of students and worked to uncover essential resonances and dissonances in the vision of the Culinary Arts & Library Commons. Hacker Associate Principal, Sarah Weber, NCIDQ, Sr. Interior Designer, is joining a panel at the 2024 American Library Association Annual Conference & Exhibit in San Diego on July 1st to discuss "Designing Libraries with Diverse Communities in Mind Using Lenses of Neurodiversity and Process-Driven Approaches". Reflecting on her experience as the Lead Interior Designer at Skagit Valley College, Culinary Arts & Library Commons, she will discuss the Community Centered Design Process for engagement and the collaborative Method of Engaging approach that utilized collage artwork to open safe and comfortable dialogues with students, gaining input and understanding of their and their communities' needs. #alaac24 #americanlibraryassocation #hackerarchiects #librariesforall

Bringing Joy to Brutalism: Hacker Architects and #HowardSWright Balfour Beatty US recently led the kick-off for the Salem Civic Center Renovation. Built in 1972, reviving and reimagining brutalist buildings of this era has become a specialty of our architecture firm. We are continually enhancing our skills in approaching large-scale, complex renovations that retain the positive aspects of this period of architecture while erasing some of the more oppressive and outdated features present in so many of them. Given our firm’s foundational values on sustainability, revitalizing structures is the most important decision we can make to preserve the embodied carbon – the challenge lies in creating light-filled, modern, and wholly inclusive spaces. Hacker projects of similar age and style to the Salem Civic Center include: [1+2] 1972 Salem Public Library Renovation (City of Salem) [3+4] 1961 Portland State University, Fariborz Maseeh Hall Renovation [5+6] 1968 Portland Community College Sylvania, Health Technology STEM Renovation https://lnkd.in/dBTVdTRK Photos: Lara Swimmer (SPL - 1), Pete Eckert (PSU - 3), Hacker #brutalistarchitecture #hackerarchitects #renovation #cityofsalem
