Magazine, “With 5 Short Words, Walmart Just Taught a Brilliant Lesson In Leadership.” The columnist highlights some of our recent investments in store manager wages and stock grants, pointing out how this inspires frontline workers to grow in their careers with us and drives retention. This Pride is particularly special for me — my first as Bumble Inc.'s Chief People Officer. I’ve had the honor of kicking off the month of celebrations, leading community events with our Pride @ Bumble Employee Resource Group, and speaking with the media (thank you, CNBC) about openly leading at work. As I reflect on my own life and career journey, it’s the learning and the progress that I celebrate this year for Pride. I also can’t overlook the issues & hostility presently facing our LGBTQ+ community. Many in our LGBTQ+ community experience shame, humiliation, discrimination, and a lack of support and protection both at work and at home. Our Transgender community, in particular, still faces daily threats of retribution and backlash. Fellow allies: please speak up and stand up for your beliefs, for your friends, and for your colleagues. Your voice and your actions in support of human rights and equal protections are needed now more than ever. It’s just not complicated or controversial to stand up for equality. Companies have an important role in setting the example of doing well and doing good. The work we do can have an extraordinary impact on our self-worth, so couple that with the feeling of being supported (or not) by your employer and colleagues for just being who you are. Trust that when employees don’t feel respected and protected, you’re not getting the best of what they have to offer and that’s a loss for everyone. I’m proud to work for Bumble as we celebrate all of our employee communities year round. And for our LGBTQ+ community specifically, it’s not just about adding Pride-themed swag or joining parades (though we certainly do these things) – it’s about the tangible benefits: showing up for our employees and working together to disrupt the systems that prevent progress so that everyone can move forward together. I have seen this article being shared a lot across my network. In my experience it is the executives and c suite that push for in office work culture when the actual employees ask for (and thrive in) remote flexibility. I have worked in a very rich, on-site work culture at Patagonia and a fully remote, very productive culture at Trove Recommerce. In my experience, an employee's productivity and innovation is much more dynamic and fluid than the system they work in. Trust, flexibility, authenticity, mission, diversity of thought, clarity and ownership all play a large role in output. I believe your talent is your innovation, not their work location. Old systems can change and work cultures evolve, the successful companies will embrace the change and build progressive cultures listening to their employees needs. New ideas and new ways of doing things is a core tenant of innovation. How can you expect innovation from old ways of thinking about work? I am very proud of the innovative remote culture we have built at Trove- rooted in trust and clarity on our mission to build the next era of conscious commerce.

I’ve been obsessed with how we all get better at this being human thing my whole life. Most coaches and thought leaders can likely say the same thing. My degrees laid a foundation, but most of what I have learned comes from really paying attention. ❓ How do we change when we feel under pressure? Uncertain? The variety of work HR covers is simply put -- A LOT! For example, let's take yesterday. A few things I did: - Worked through future org planning with our founders - Evaluated a new AI speaking coaching platform to support managers - Did targeted outreach for a very senior role we are hiring - Met with my team to plan for the week and tackle questions - Broke down implementation for a new framework for sales compensation - Evaluated potential legal counsel options for us - Did a deep dive on how to ensure our remote culture is thriving - Replied to many LinkedIn messages from humans interested in working for us - Tackled some glass door reviews - Connected with the organizers of an upcoming conference I'm speaking at to ensure alignment for effective sessions And... I'm probably missing things, since this is off the top off my head. HR is a field that requires so much variety, which often means a ton of context switching. This translates into tired brains towards the end of the day and often feeling like 'did I do enough?' Especially for those in HR in scaling startups, that thought will always be there, because the reality is there will always be more to do. The complementary reality though is that without recognizing our efforts and our daily wins, the motivation to do more the next day is harder. So if you need a little extra motivation, write down some of the things you did yesterday. Help yourself visualize all that you do. I promise, it is a lot. And it is adding a ton of value to help your organization each day! #hr #leadership #motivation

As we move into the end of the school year, and I finish up a week of no after school care for my child, I reflect on the theme of flexibility and standing firm regarding return to office. The conversation has shifted so drastically - from the days of getting our work accomplished, even with a heavier workload that COVID created in the Technology workforce PLUS caring for our children or families at home in new ways. Now we are hearing trumpets for return to office from many tech focused businesses that soared high with great profits, and now are readjusting with regular layoffs. I look ahead and imagine the impacts of 'standing firm' on return to office on tech's workforce diversity.

Subculture, noun. "a cultural group within a larger culture, often having beliefs or interests at variance with those of the larger culture." I've worked at gigs where I was waiting for leaders - my CEO, my boss, anyone more senior than me - to "make culture better." As if they were going to suddenly wake up one day and think they know exactly what's going to make all of us happy. And it took me YEARS to recognize that there was power within me all along. Within all of us. This is why I talk so much about what subcultures can teach us. The punk subculture wanted no part in the status quo - so they created their own movement. Organizational subcultures can make big ripples when that autonomous power is harnessed. We can set boundaries together, set expectations with one another, and build trust in a way that allows us to move more quickly, more clearly and more creatively together. This requires: ✳ bravery ✳ progressive leaders (this doesn't mean people with leadership titles!) ✳ someone who is willing to ask, "what do we want to do to make positive change?" ...and all of a sudden everyone outside of that subculture starts saying "DANG. What are THEY doing differently!?" Who do YOU know who wants change where you collaborate? How can you start that movement? Never forget that people have the power! Over the weekend, I read some of Kevin Kelly’s advice for life (kk.org) and some resonated with me as I reflect on my career: ✨ The surest way to be successful is to invent your own definition of success. Shoot your arrows first and then paint a bull’s eye around where they land. You’re the winner! ✨ Never hesitate to invest in yourself—to pay for a class, a course, a new skill. These modest expenditures pay outsized dividends. ✨ Forget trying to decide what your life’s destiny is. That’s too grand. Instead, just figure out what you should do in the next 2 years. What was the best career advice that you received?
