You feel the need to always prove yourself as a Black woman in your career. Prove to your family.  Prove to your friends.  Prove to your colleagues. Prove to everyone that: You’re the smart one.  You’re the dependable one. You’re the one who gets stuff done. You rise to the occasion but it’s hurting you. Work becomes a singular focus. Interests and hobbies all disappear. Personal relationships slowly deteriorate. You lose yourself in the process. And eventually find yourself stuck. You also find yourself: Disconnected [from yourself]. Disappointed [in your situation]. Discouraged [about things improving]. You don’t know what you want to do. Black women struggle with this in their careers. You often feel the need to prove (outwardly) you belong at work. And show up for others, but not for yourself. It’s important to remember: You deserve to have a fulfilling career. Take steps to understand your situation. Get curious about where you are.  Go all in and fully connect with yourself.  Give up your logical thinking (for once). Let go of the insecurities you’re holding. And go after what you want in your career with CONFIDENCE. This is the support I give to my 1:1 clients. You can have this, too. 5 (hard) lessons I learned from not being aligned in my career as a Black woman in a STEM field: \ Career fog is real. \ Career fog does not go away on its own. \ Like relationships, careers are a two-way street.  \ Jumping into a role doesn’t solve an alignment issue.  \ Lack of vision for your career does not mean you’re inadequate.  As a Black woman, you often feel like you have to stick it out for a greater good.   But just because you can doesn’t mean you should. The only way to break free is to address this head on. Get the support you need to get clear. So that you can start living the life you DREAM. Your career is a big part of that dream. You don’t know your next move in your career. And it’s disrupting your peace.  You’re distracted. You’re disappointed. To the point where you struggle to see: The big picture for your career.  The next move you’ll make.  The value you add. Black women in STEM/corporate fields struggle in this area. You put emphasis on completing tasks. You put your head down and work, work, work. You put all of your energy on day-to-day demands. And it’s costing you a fulfilling career. So, try this instead: Go in fully on YOU. Take time to reflect on: What do you value? What are your strengths? What are you not willing to give up? Challenge yourself to take stock of these things. As a way to see if your career is serving you. Instead of you serving a career. I quit my dream job and it was the best career move I ever made. My manager was great. My colleagues were nice. My projects were interesting. My sponsors advocated for me. However, staying in that role required me to sacrifice my life for a career. I had to log in till late every evening and could not have a life outside work. I was told to do and say things that didn’t align with my values to impress the leadership team. I didn’t see any Black women in senior positions. Everything the job required me to be and do was out of sync with the vision I had for myself. So I decided to get a new job that better suited the season of life I was in and it was the best career move I ever made. As the years passed, I have never had to compromise on my values or personal life because of work. This is what I have gone on to help 100s of women achieve in my coaching program. Over the past 8 years, I have worked with women to move to higher-paying and more fulfilling careers, Careers where they are doing work they love while honouring their happiness, health and home And are encouraged to have a career by design and not by default. Cheers to the next generation of women who are navigating their careers on their own terms, unapologetically. I've often been told that I was hired because I am a Black woman, or that I would of course get a call back for the same reason. It couldn't be because: 🔹️I hold both an MBA and a Tech MS (that I got at the same time) 🔹️I worked full time while putting myself through undergrad in only 2.5 years 🔹️I started working when I was 13, learning the ropes long before the 20 somethings showed up (not condoning child labor) 🔹️ I have a work ethic that can't be be beat because I learned early on that I was only competing with myself...and I can always do better 🔹️My clients like working with me because I am creative and will make sure the solution will truly work for them 🔹️My team members learn and grow by working with me, preparing them to be ready for their next career step 🔹️I have won industry and client awards for my work 🔹️I am a consummate learner and will adjust as needed to be the best I can be for myself and others Don't let others diminish your story by reducing you to your demographics; own your narrative and accomplishments! Shout out to the companies getting this ratio right… So many employers tell me they want to get involved in Black History Month but they don't know what to say (cue the rushed social post). Instead, I tell them: 1️⃣ Listen & Learn  Talk to black team members and gather insights from external organizations about how you can support the black community using your expertise, connections, insights etc. 2️⃣ Take Action  Create a meaningful positive impact. For example, I host career events where employers can teach a skill, share advice or start mentoring our network of black Gen Z students and grads. 3️⃣ Shout About It  Now here’s where many employers go wrong - you’re doing some great work, let the world know so you can inspire/challenge the next organisation The authenticity comes across when you exchange your time and expertise to create a positive impact on the black community and then you simply talk about that impact. You have accomplished a lot in your career and still feel empty as a Black woman. This was my client. She had done well in her career. Passing exams.  Moving up the ladder.  Getting exposure to new work. She had invested YEARS in her career. Yet felt disengaged and unhappy for a while. She had even reached a new level of burnout. So, we worked together for 3 months. And so much happened: We uncovered factors holding her back. We explored areas connected to her identify.  We designed an action plan purposefully for her. It allowed her to go after what she wanted with confidence. She’s now on her way to a more fulfilling career.  And the best part:  She’s learned to build a career that serves her, every time.  You can, too. Me, earlier in my career: I was lost and hid it well. I aimed to please everyone.  I agonized over the unknown.  I doubted myself in several areas. Being a Black woman in a STEM field has its own challenges. But, make sure you do your part to identify your insecurities. And understand how to manage them in the workplace. I found a coach and things turned around significantly. Me, now in my career: I prioritize my needs better.  I know I’m where I’m supposed to be.  I find ways to use my strengths over and over. And now, I have mental freedom moving in my career. This can be you, too. Remember: The first step is to acknowledge and ask for support.    The work won’t be easy (my 1:1 clients know). Success won’t come overnight. There will be twists, turns, and more. But the gains are worth the commitment. This is how you get the career (and life) you want.
