Fourthmeal... the meal between dinner and breakfast. It's been almost 20 years since we introduced this crazy idea that didn't just elevate the business, but truly became part of the cultural lexicon. The team at FCB Irvine and Taco Bell realized that 'spice up the night' had done great things for the business, but wanted to provoke the fast food industry as only TB could. Strategically, we leaned into the fact that the food did more than just fill you up, but late at night it was more about 'feeding your carnivorous side' (aka the main idea from the brief). Since then, seeing how the business has continued to evolve, creative that pushed deeper into the role Fourthmeal can play in people's nights, and as the CBO said at the time... "TB is really just late night food we eat during the day". Remembering our crew that created this iconic idea... As we wrap up this year's festival season down in Indio, CA it brought us an unexpected twist. While Coachella has long been the crown jewel of music festivals Stagecoach is emerging as a formidable contender and may have just overthrown Coachella this year. Here are just 2 of my thoughts as to why: 1. Genre Appeal: Country music has seen a resurgence in popularity, expanding beyond its traditional audience. Stagecoach capitalizes on this trend, offering a lineup that appeals to both country loyalists and crossover fans. With acts like Wiz Khalifa, Post Malone, Marshmello and so many others showing up there are more eyes on country music than arguably ever before. 2. Audience Experience: With a reputation for a more relaxed atmosphere, Stagecoach offers a different kind of festival experience that might be attracting those looking for something more laid-back than the high-energy hustle of Coachella. As a digital marketing agency with a keen eye on entertainment trends, we at NOX Media are closely watching these developments. Money talks in all forms of media and sports media is no different. Well, for these past few years, and especially this year for women’s basketball, money revenue has been powerful. Women’s advertising revenue and overall revenue have skyrocketed. Viewership is up in a big way thanks to stars like Caitlin Clark and recording-setting attention is being delivered. Glad we are seeing women’s sports receive the attention they deserve. After seeing Caitlin Clark's rookie contract value last night, here's to hoping this revenue potential begins to positively influence WBNA earnings in the same way. #WomensSports #Sports #Advertising

Are brands pulling back on support for Pride this year? It has been a few weeks since I chatted about this with Allison Carter at Ragan Communications and PR Daily and I still believe that they are not. Rather, I think we are seeing fewer brands veering into the rainbow-washing space given the heightened risk of criticism from LGBTQ+ advocates (and vocal anti-LGBT activists) on inauthentic or superficial and performative allyship. However, those brands that understand that action earns trust are continuing to support Pride by uplifting their work to embrace inclusive policies, creating impact-focused purpose-driven campaigns, and promoting a culture of belonging by celebrating and uplifting their employees, consumers, and partners. These brands are not backing away from those values and there is plenty of data to show that this will continue to drive growth, as noted by this year's #ReturnOnLeadership (ROL) Index, comprised of companies with strategic clarity, alignment, focus, and a sense of meaning, showing that the ROL Index (+49%) has outpaced both the S&P 500 (+26%) and the Dow Jones Industrial Average (+11%) over the past three years.

"Chaos asks questions of you order never will" The wonderful Colleen DeCourcy retells her experience working with Dan Wieden when she took over as Chief Creative Officer at Wieden+Kennedy Her immediate response to me asking about working with Dan was this quote about chaos. We have a natural reaction against chaos because it can be destructive and unsettling but what if we reframed it as a necessary condition for achieving something truly breakthrough 🌪 Chaos propels you forward while order maintains the status quo 🌪 Chaos creates leaders while order creates managers 🌪 Chaos demands a response while order delays it 🌪 Chaos reveals the cracks while order papers them up 🌪 Chaos forces ownership while order delegates it 🌪 Chaos fosters creativity while order fosters compliance 🌪 Chaos requires trust while order replaces it It got me thinking whether there is an optimal mix of Chaos and order required to achieve breakthrough ideas and momentum? We spend most of our time creating order but what if what we actually needed was an injection of chaos? Articles like this are why creative and media teams need to be in lockstep more than ever. A great piece in The Wall Street Journal calls out how brands are leaning more into happiness, humor, and nostalgia in their products and creative messaging. This strategy will hopefully woo customers downtrodden by everyday problems and distracted by chaotic realities in a 2024 full of wars and before the upcoming presidential election. So, P&G is introducing a fun, foamy toilet bomb based on consumer "research." Miller Lite introduced retro ads to remind people of the good ol' days. Will fun, foamy toilet bombs cure people's everyday problems? Of course not. Do I fear marketers are thinking too much about pre-election brand safety, and not enough about the dark temperature that might come after November? Yes. Am I curious about what kind of messaging advertisers run if people are actually happy (dramatic? Serious?) I do. But putting all of that aside, I worry brands' attempts at happiness aren't being given a fighting chance. Why? Because while creatives are making more and more ads that are emotional and pull on people's heart strings, media teams are placing these ads in more and more small and / or invisible screens. WARC just put out a paper that 40% of brands / marketers upped their performance spend last year, vs. 36% who upped brand investment. That follows a three year trend of performance gaining with brand modestly rising or staying flat. How can you expect to make people happy, if the screens we are buying are low attention - below the 2.5 seconds required to make a lasting memory - or low positivity - within the doom scrolling of social media - or low reach - because we continue to buy banner ads full of fraud? After all, creative teams rely on media teams for research tools they don't have access to and expertise from being tapped into what works on the various platforms creatives are building for. But often, that consultation is compromised by the fact that media teams either have annual partnerships with certain platforms they need to honor, regardless of the creative strategy, or certain goals they are responsible for, so they opt for attributable channels over the most effective ones. Ultimately, creative teams need media teams that will put their ads in the best canvases possible to make their attempts work, and media teams need to also be honest with their creative teams about what sort of message will actually resonate with the people they're trying to reach. But I fear too many are merely doing hand-offs without enough consultation or mutual respect and support. If you find yourself in that position, I'd love to talk. https://lnkd.in/eCY2HYTm

I know I'm not alone in feeling like everything in the #marketing ecosystem is changing faster than ever. But when I talk to marketers (and that's a major part of my job), I'm surprised by how often #media convergence is mentioned in passing or relegated to a second-class priority. That's why I am slightly obsessed with our new report; it's the product of many conversations with media leaders like Deanna (Cullen) Mulkeen and Sammy (Frankel) Rubin who are extremely clear-eyed about the major impact these trends are going to have on the industry as a whole, from audience strategies to media planning to campaign-level optimization. They're carving a new strategic path forward that will help brands capitalize on these opportunities, unsilo teams and integrate data sets to generate powerful insights, and set up an insurmountable edge in the market for our clients.
