I'm thrilled that countries passed a critical resolution* at the World Health Assembly to recommit and refocus efforts on maternal and newborn health - and that it includes birth defects! Specifically, it invites Member States to "consider implementing a universal newborn screening program including comprehensive birth defect screening, including specific needs and considerations for diagnosis, management and long-term care of children with birth defects." More children are living with congenital birth defects - like #clubfoot - than ever before, and they are entitled to healthcare like everyone else. All countries can and should integrate screening and treatment of birth defects in their national health systems. In several countries - Sri Lanka, Philippines, Paraguay, Sierra Leone - we're supporting our local partners and national governments to make clubfoot early detection, referral and treatment part of routine healthcare. Whilst its hard to see that any progress has been made, to the contrary - it looks like 0 progress made and everything got worse, with recent years breaking through the 1.5C targets. We mustn't give up hope that the many initiatives that have been kicked off as a result of these agreements, have prevented worse things from happening... too optimistic? maybe But working in the sustainability and SDG space has never been more exciting, with many people sharing that a just transition to a more sustainable, de-growth and circular economy is, ...possible. The questions is how fast, to prevent worse things from happening (Climate Catastrophy, Ecological Collapse, ...the list is getting longer). Currently the ANNUAL financing gap to the 2030 SDGs is (according to UN estimates), around $4 trillion. This is the same as Germany's or Japan's Gross Domestic Product. This is a staggering number and concept that the money missing to achieve the SDGs is the same as the monetary value of ALL finished goods and services made in Germany or Japan on an annual basis. And yet, the world economy is worth around $100 Trillion, so $4 trillion = 4%. That ...almost...sounds doable? too optimistic? maybe When it comes to asset managers, total discretionary assets under management (AUM) of the 500 biggest managers amounted to USD 113.7 trillion at the end of 2022, down by 13.7% from the end of 2021. The largest, BlackRock, manages $10 trillion and the next biggest 2, Vanguard ($9 trillion) and Fidelity ($4 trillion). Surely, investing into solutions on a planet that is actually liveable with resources being consumed at a sustainable pace is what its at? Otherwise, what will be managed in 20 or 30 years?

We have a lot of work to do when it comes to health equity across the U.S.             Racial health disparities exist in every state. Even in states with above average healthcare systems for all racial groups, Black and Native Americans are far more likely to die early from preventable deaths than white and Asian Americans. Racial disparities in health are driven by factors inside and outside state health care systems. "The policy choices that federal, state and local leaders have made over many decades have led to economic suppression, unequal educational access, and widespread housing segregation, all of which have contributed in their own ways to worse health outcomes for people of color." Racial health disparities are further perpetuated by less insurance coverage and unequal access to quality primary care. We have a long way to go to achieve health equity — but it is possible. According to the report, we can bridge the gap by ensuring universal, affordable and equitable healthcare coverage; strengthening primary care systems and improving delivery of services; and investing in social services. Let's work together to ensure everyone regardless of race or ethnicity can access their full potential to live long, healthy lives.

We all want to be able to put healthy food on the table for ourselves and our families. But many of us face significant barriers to doing so. This week, Congress is again considering cuts to #SNAP, a policy that is proven to improve food access and reduce poverty. This comes at a time when new research from the Urban Institute shows that current SNAP benefits are not keeping up with rising food costs. The study—funded by RWJF—shares the latest data on the gap between meal costs and SNAP participants’ monthly benefits, a gap that remained high in 2023 despite that year’s cost-of-living adjustment to benefits. UNDERSTANDING DIVERGENT PERSPECTIVES ON MALARIA. Malaria, the age-old opponent of humanity, continues to relentlessly assault communities worldwide. In the battle against this ancient enemy, two distinct narratives emerge: that of malaria service users and providers. While both share the goal of eradicating malaria, their perspectives often diverge, highlighting the need for innovative approaches to combat this global curse. Malaria Service User's Tale: For those who have experienced the devastating effects of malaria firsthand, the struggle is very real. From fever-induced restlessness to agonizing body aches, the impact of the disease is not only physical but also emotional and economic. In malaria-endemic regions, families face the constant threat of infection, disrupting daily life and draining already limited resources. Access to proper diagnosis and treatment is often a challenge, leading to delayed care and increased suffering. Malaria service users demand effective interventions, compassion, and understanding from healthcare providers who often seem distant from their reality The Provider's Perspective: On the other side of the spectrum are the malaria service providers, our dear health providers, tirelessly working on the front lines to combat the disease. Armed with scientific knowledge and medical expertise, they strive to deliver quality care to those in need. However, they face numerous challenges, including limited resources, logistical hurdles, and the ever-evolving nature of the malaria parasite. Faced with the overwhelming burden of cases, providers may sometimes become insensitive to the individual struggles of their patients, focusing instead on the broader goal of disease control and prevention. Bridging the Gulf: Despite their different viewpoints, malaria service users and providers share a common enemy: Malaria. To truly make headway in the fight against this disease, it is essential to bridge the gap between these two perspectives. This requires a multifaceted approach that addresses both the clinical and human aspects of malaria care. Efforts must be made to improve access to malaria diagnosis and treatment, particularly in remote and underserved areas. On the other hand, greater emphasis must be placed on community engagement and empowerment. Furthermore, healthcare providers must receive comprehensive training in the clinical aspects of malaria management, as well as empathy and communication skills. Recognizing the human face of malaria is essential in fostering trust and building rapport with malaria service users, ultimately leading to better health outcomes. If you eat better, you feel better – a pretty simple concept. Yet, our healthcare system focuses on expensive remediation instead of wellness and prevention. It's time for policymakers to strengthen the connection between our food system and our health system! Senator Markey (D-MA) and Senator Marshall (R-KA) did just that at today’s Primary Health and Retirement Security Senate Subcommittee hearing on #FoodIsMedicine. Poor nutrition is a leading cause of death and disability, disproportionately affecting our most vulnerable populations facing the dual burden of food insecurity and diet-related diseases. For example, studies have shown that farmworkers experience higher rates of food insecurity, obesity, and diabetes compared to other groups.   The #FoodIsMedicine movement is rooted in the idea that our diet significantly impacts our health and overall well-being. By integrating food-based interventions, such as medically tailored meal programs, into the healthcare system, we can dramatically improve health outcomes, especially for those most at risk, while also reducing healthcare costs through prevention. This approach not only enhances population health, but also promotes a more just and equitable society. Key legislation to watch includes S2840 (Sanders I-VT and Marshall R-KS): Bipartisan Primary Care and Health Workforce Act, advancing Food Is Medicine at Community Health Centers S2133 (Stabenow D-MI, Marshall R-KS, Booker D-NJ, Cassidy R-LA): Medically Tailored Home-Delivered Meals Demonstration Act, integrating Food is Medicine into Medicare.
