By listening to neighbors and partners, we realized that aspects of our own grant-funding process had unintentionally created barriers to entry for smaller and newer nonprofit organizations — the very organizations often best positioned to address inequity. Out of this realization, the Opportunity Initiative was born. Our Community Impact team identified an initial cohort of 15 organizations aligned with our mission, focused on our priority populations, and led and founded by people of color. With one-time grants, networking, and workshops focused on fundamentals like financial reporting, we sought to give these nonprofits the tools to grow their organizations and build a foundation for the long term. And they, in turn, have made us more effective in our mission. The Opportunity Initiative provided one-time grants to 15 BIPOC-founded or led agencies with budgets of less than $100,000. The process was streamlined, and simple to apply for, with as little arduous back-end work as possible. Grants ranged from $15,000 to $21,800 and were used for marketing, updating technology, recruiting staff, and developing program curriculums — those critical elements smaller nonprofits often don’t have the resources to invest in. Since then, we’ve supported additional agencies through the Initiative.
