  • Andrews McMeel Universal

Andrews McMeel Universal, an international media and entertainment company, purchased the historic Boley building in the heart of Kansas City for its new corporate headquarters. Needing additional space for their 200+ employees, AMU incorporated the abandoned post-modern food court in the adjacent office building. Designed to stimulate synergy and inspire creativity, the light-filled volume embodies the energy of a company looking to the future while respecting its past.

During the day, the upper floors of the parking structure are filled with cars from the adjacent advertising agency. The orange ribbon designed to demarcate “people” places (vertical circulation) was also intended to create a niche for the sidewalk cafe, which activates the street with patrons constantly engaged in conversations and people-watching. In the evening, when the frosted-glass façade is illuminated, the building turns into a large public canvas, and as shadows dance across it, its surface becomes a large piece of collaborative art. The structure received the most prestigious Design Excellence award from the International Parking Institute in 2008 as well as an AIA Art in Architecture award for the integration of a sculpture by local Kansas City artist, Jim Woodfill, along a pedestrian walkway.

The locations are memorable places, fully integrated into the fabric of unique urban neighborhoods, where people may learn, celebrate, interact, and also bank. Originally built in 1885, the Romanesque Revival school building was salvaged from years of neglect and disrepair. The exterior was completely restored to its original condition including the addition of a bell tower that had been torn down by previous owners. Renovation work included tuck-pointing, re-roofing, re-guttering and restoration of exterior windows and their multi-paned, multi-colored transom lights.

The main level of the three story facility features fine antique galleries and retail showrooms. Two cafes and a library/pub take care of day-to-day dining in what used to be classroom space on the second floor. Other former classroom spaces are used for banquets, receptions and meetings. The facility contains a full service kitchen for a la carte dining and banquets as well as a separate kitchen located on the lower level for off site catering.
