Vance Courthouse and Federal Building
QEA was awarded this project through a GSA Design Excellence solicitation process. The project was able to proceed through ARRA funding. The building as originally designed was the prototypical Federal Courts/postal facility that was constructed in mid-size cities through out the US in the early 1910s. The renovation included new bankruptcy courtrooms and functions as well as the provision of a Grand Jury suite along with other Federal Government users. The main public spaces and exterior of…

The courtrooms were relocated to the formal postal sorting room where the former sorting room light monitors were recreated to provide natural light into the new courtrooms. The project is on track to receive LEED Gold certification.

North Carolina History Center
After developing a master plan for Tryon Palace, QEA served as design architect, collaborating with architect-of-record BJAC, for this new 60,000 SF museum facility. Working within the framework and context of the historic town as well as the industrial character of the waterfront site, the new facility serves as orientation center, museum and educational complex for the 22-acre historic site. The far reaching design not only knits together building and landscape to create a visitor-experience-driven project, but utilizes advanced and sustainable technologies. One of my favorite clients of all time. Very gracious and accommodating.

Concert Hall - John F Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts
Our first theater renovation at JFKC. Renovation of Concert Hall was required to be completed in 36 weeks - we made it with hours to spare. First theater to take a comprehensive look at providing access for persons with disabilities following the ADA being passed. Work was very well received. Opening weekend concerts and parties were great.

Eisenhower Theater - The John F Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts
The smallest of the Kennedy Center’s three primary stages, the Eisenhower Theater needed dramatic upgrades to meet the expectations of performers and patrons. QEA designed the theater’s rebirth as a completely new and elegant space, featuring improved accessibility for persons with disabilities, upgraded systems to meet life safety codes and improved technical theater systems. The transformation has given the theater an enhanced sense of intimacy, while optimizing its technical capabilities.

Genetics Lab - The National Zoo
-
This existing concrete animal holding facility was adapted into a state-of-the-art research laboratory for a group of elite scientist dedicated to the study of molecular genetics. The facility design brings a sense of outside into the work spaces. The efficient layout with common work resources and building services within a central core allows the lab users to maximize use of the space and has proven to be a real asset to the research team.
