Today marks the beginning of National Cleft and Craniofacial Awareness Month. Join us as we raise awareness with a story of strength and resilience of a young boy impacted by a skull abnormality. Our care teams have the ability to serve patients like this and we could not be more thankful for the support that makes it possible.

Last summer, a day of surfing with friends ended in a devastating spinal cord injury for Marcos Ornellas, who was pulled from the water unable to feel his body below the neck. He was flown to our level I trauma center in Oakland, where Dr. Peter Sun and his team planned surgery to save the young athlete's mobility. Their front spine access approach aimed to optimize mobility and recovery for the young athlete, leveraging the center's resources and expertise for a successful operation. "Being at a trauma center really helped with his care," Dr. Sun says. "Level 1 means that the trauma surgeons are in the hospital." After nine months of challenging physical therapy, Marcos is resuming activities he loves. He continues to make strides in his recovery, but the former high school soccer star who aimed for a college scholarship is beginning to contemplate plan B. "My priorities have changed now," he explains. "Family, friends and my college education are what is important to me now... This could have turned out very differently, and I'm so grateful to be where I am now." Read about Marcos and how the trauma team got him through: https://ucsfh.org/4evWcRM

Welcome!
It is my pleasure to announce that Mary Gilbert, MSN, BSN, RN, has joined the UCSF Benioff Children's Hospitals, Mission Bay team as the new Assistant Unit Director for the Pre-op and PACU. Mary began her nursing career as a nursing assistant in Minnesota. She earned her RN in 2005, starting on the Med/Surg unit and working her way up to the ICU, then transitioning to the PACU in 2010. Since then, Mary has served in several leadership roles in both Critical Care and the PACU. She has also worked as an interim leadership traveling nurse, which is how she came to love the Bay area. She states, “My husband and I fell in love with the Bay area, so I convinced him to move again. Searching for the perfect fit, as I plan this to be our forever home, I found UCSF. Their mission and values align with who I am, and I am so happy that the team at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital have granted me the opportunity to work with them. Excited to meet everyone and become a part of the team.” Welcome Mary!
