Aiming at reducing the risk of heart disease—the leading cause of death for children with kidney failure—Dr. Marsha Lee, director of the pediatric dialysis program at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospitals, and Audrey Busch Anaya, MSN, RN, CNN, the program's clinical nurse supervisor, led efforts to implement new national standards for blood pressure measurements during dialysis.

Following a bone marrow transplant, a lifesaving but grueling procedure, nearly half of children develop dangerous lung infections. But new research from Matt Zinter shows that that children with more balanced lung microbiomes – the community of microbes living there – are at less risk. Some infections were caused by unusual culprits that are hard to find with traditional methods.
